Experimental investigation of systems for synchronizing time scales by means of the Quasar satellite communication system network

Experiments conducted at ground stations of the Quasar satellite communication network using both a null base as well as a base of around 2000 km is described. In experiments with a null base, the time scale transmission error was 1 nsec. Comparison of the results of collocation with data cbtained by the GLONASS system in the course of experiments using a 2100-km base demonstrated a divergence of the results of from 5 to 25 nsec. Maintaining global coherence during reading.

Previous research demonstrated a contradiction effect: Although text currently being processed was locally coherent, readers were aware of inconsistencies between a protagonist's actions and characteristics of the protagonists that were described earlier in the text and subsequently backgrounded. In the present experiments, not only the critical characteristics but also the protagonist were backgrounded. When the protagonist was reintroduced into the narrative in the context of carrying out an inconsistent action, the contradiction effect again occurred. In Exps 1–3, we examined the effects of several variables on the onset of the effect. In Exp 4, we presented probes at various points in the passage with results that supported the conclusion that the critical characteristics had been backgrounded before the sentence that contradicted them. Results are discussed in terms of several recent models in which currently active representational elements serve as retrieval cues for other inactive, but highly related, elements. The detection of the onset of electrode-electrolyte interfaceimpedance nonlinearity: a theoretical study

The equivalent series resistance and reactance of the electrode-electrolyte interface impedance have both been used to detect the onset of signal amplitude induced nonlinearity. Using a theoretical model, it is shown that the choice of the most sensitive indicator depends on the phase angle of the “polarization” impedance and on the applied frequency     

Isolated ovarian polyarteritis nodosa

Polyarteritis nodosa is a rare disorder and a form of systemic vasculitis. A 48 year-old female was admitted to the hospital because menorrhagia and pelvic pain in February 1993. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy resulting in a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for myoma of uterus and a right adnexal cystic mass. Histopathologic examination revealed left ovarian periarteritis nodosa. Further investigation and 9 months follow-up failed to show any systemic involvement. To our knowledge the isolated ovarian polyarteritis nodosa is the first case in the literature.     

Inhalation toxicity of 1,6-hexanediamine dihydrochloride in F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice

1,6-Hexanediamine (HDA) is a high production volume chemical which is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of paints, resins, inks, and textiles and as a corrosion inhibitor in lubricants. Two- and 13-week studies of the toxicity of the dihydrochloride salt of HDA (HDDC) were conducted in male and female Fischer 344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice using whole-body inhalation exposure. Both species were evaluated for histopathologic and reproductive effects, and rats were examined for clinical chemistry and hematologic changes. In the 2-week inhalation studies, animals were exposed to 10-800 mg HDDC/m3, 6 hr per day. All rats, all female mice, and two of five male mice in the high-exposure group died before the end of the study. Surviving mice in this group had a dose-dependent depression in body weight gain. Clinical signs were primarily related to upper respiratory tract irritation and included dyspnea and nasal discharge in both species. Treatment-related histopathologic lesions included inflammation and necrosis of the laryngeal epithelium of both species and the tracheal epithelium of mice, as well as focal inflammation and ulceration of the respiratory and olfactory nasal mucosa. In the 13-week inhalation studies, animals were exposed to HDDC at concentrations of 1.6-160 mg/m3 for 6 hr per day, 5 days per week. In addition to the base study groups, a supplemental group of rats at each exposure level was included to assess the effect of HDDC on reproduction. No treatment-related changes in organ weights or organ-to-body-weight ratios occurred in rats, and no treatment-related clinical signs or gross lesions were seen in either species. Chemical-related microscopic lesions were limited to the upper respiratory tract (larynx and nasal passages) in the two highest exposure groups and were similar in both species. These lesions included minimal to mild focal erosion, ulceration, inflammation, and hyperplasia of the laryngeal epithelium, in addition to degeneration of the olfactory and respiratory nasal epithelium. HDDC caused no significant changes in sperm morphology or vaginal cytology and no significant adverse effects on reproduction in rats or mice. Hematologic and clinical chemistry changes in rats were minor and sporadic and were not accompanied by related histologic findings. Psychologists in secondary schools in the 1990s: Current functions, training, and job satisfaction.

Surveyed 173 school psychologists serving secondary schools concerning their current roles and functions, training needs, and general job satisfaction. Results revealed that many school psychologists in secondary schools are providing a wide variety of services, including direct (e.g., counseling) and indirect (e.g., consultation) services. Approximately three-quarters of the Ss reported being satisfied with their work in secondary schools. Job satisfaction was related to increased time spent in intervention-related activities and decreased time spent in psychological assessment activities. Data reflected encouraging findings regarding the scope of school psychological services in secondary settings but also underscored the need for diversified training of school psychologists. Neuropeptidergic organization of the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the blind mole rat (Spalax ehrenbergi)

The blind mole rat, Spalax, is a subterranean rodent with atrophied, subcutaneous eyes. Whereas most of the visual system is highly degenerated, the retino-hypothalamic pathway in this species has remained intact. Although Spalax is considered to be visually blind, circadian locomotor rhythms are entrained by the light/dark cycle. In the present study we used anterograde tracing techniques to demonstrate retinal afferents to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and immunohistochemistry to examine the distribution of neuropeptides that are known to be involved in the regulation or expression of circadian rhythmicity. Based on the localization of retinal afferents and neuropeptides, the SCN can be divided into two subdivisions. The ventral region, which receives retinal afferents, also contains vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-containing neurons, and fibers that are immunopositive to neuropeptide Y (NPY) and serotonin (5-HT). The dorsal region contains vasopressinergic neurons, but this latter cell population is extremely sparse compared to that described in other rodents. The dorsal region is also characterized by numerous VIP-immunoreactive fibers. The presence of NPY and 5-HT fibers suggests that the SCN receives afferent projections from the intergeniculate leaflet and from the raphe nuclei, respectively. These neuroanatomical results, together with previous studies of behavior, visual tract tracing, and immediate early gene expression, confirm that an endogenous clock and the capacity for light entrainment of circadian rhythms are conserved in the blind mole rat.     

The Childhood Injury Prevention and Promotion of Safety Programme (CHIPPS)

We report a case of cervical epidural hematoma associated with anticoagulant therapy in a 68 year-old man, who presented with tetraplegia. He was operated 12 hours after the onset. Three months later, he had recovered almost completely. The etiologies and prognosis of such lesions are reviewed.     

Prenatal exposure to methylmercury alters locomotor activity of male but not female rats

In the present study the neurotoxic effects of a low dosage (0.5 mg/kg per day) of methylmercury (MeHg) on the developing nervous system were investigated. Pregnant rats were treated with MeHg from day 7 of pregnancy to day 7 of lactation. Locomotor activity (locomotion, rearing, and motility) and spatial learning ability were tested in the offspring at 6 months of age. The expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) was examined by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. A significant decrease in spontaneous motility and rearing was observed only in the MeHg-treated male rats. After administration of a low dose of d-amphetamine (0.5 mg/kg) no differences could be observed between control and MeHg-treated male rats, suggesting that changes in dopaminergic transmission were involved. However, no change in TH messenger RNA expression was observed. No changes in spatial learning acquisition or memory were shown in MeHg-treated rats. Taken together, these findings show that during development a very low dosage of MeHg exerts neurotoxic effects detectable in adulthood, and that susceptibility is gender-dependent.
