Glycogen in the placenta and its appendages is important for fetal well-being. The precise location of the glycogen stores, however, is unknown. This study was initiated to quantitate glycogen levels at well-defined sampling sites in more than 641 samples from 10 uncomplicated pregnancies and to correlate these glycogen levels with clinical and morphological variables. By biochemical assay, glycogen levels were greatest in the midumbilical cord section (29.08 +/- 1.18 mg/g dry wt) and lowest in the amnionic membrane (2.31 +/- 0.08 mg/g dry wt). Within the placental disk, parenchymal glycogen levels were greatest near the cord insertion (9.31 +/- 2.68 mg/g dry wt) and lowest at the periphery (5.71 +/- 1.14 mg/g dry wt). The midumbilical cord glycogen level showed strong direct correlations (P < .001) with birth weight, umbilical cord weight, and total calculated umbilical cord glycogen and somewhat lower but significant (P < .037) direct correlations with the calculated mean umbilical cord glycogen level, total calculated placental glycogen content, and placental weight. The glycogen level in the middisk parenchymal section from the fetal surface correlated directly with gestational age. Periodic acid-Schiff stains showed that magenta glycogen granules were most abundant in the cytoplasm of the vascular smooth muscle cells. These data show significant variations in glycogen levels among sampling sites. Definition of the precise sampling site is important for clinicopathologic studies of placental glycogen and for interstudy correlations.  相似文献

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains require intimin to induce attaching and effacing (A/E) lesions in newborn piglets. Infection of newborn calves with intimin-positive or intimin-negative EHEC O157:H7 demonstrated that intimin is needed for colonization, A/E lesions, and disease in cattle. These results suggest that experiments to determine if intimin-based vaccines reduce O157:H7 levels in cattle are warranted.  相似文献

Although patients taking phenformin are more likely to develop lactic acidosis in the presence of renal, cardiovascular, or hepatic disease, criteria for safe use of the drug are not well established. Eight diabetics died of lactic acidosis in Nottingham in 1972-5 and all were taking phenformin in therapeutic doses. Six had attended the diabetic clinic within a month of their terminal illness. Two patients had appreciable renal impairment and should not have been given phenformin. Four had hypertension and minimal evidence of renal disease, while in two no predisposing factor was identified. There are so many contraindications to the use of phenformin that it is doubtful whether patients on the drug can be monitored adequately. We suggest that phenformin should be withdrawn from general use.  相似文献

The dynamics of the ultrastructure of the neurosecretory system in the postburn period is characterized by phasic of organells of neurosecretory cells and synapses on their bodies and processes. Immediately after burn there appear pronounced signs of an increased formation of secretion synchronous to a considerably increased functional activity of synaptic structures. Of the opposite character are fine structures in neurocytes in the subsequent period (1-1,5 hour after burn). Phenomena of disintegration and degeneration of organells are developing in the cells. In the posiologically active neurohormones and degeneration of membrane structures gradually increase at all the observed stages of the burn trauma. All the elements of the supraoptic nucleus and the posterior lobe of the hypophysis early responding to the effect of such a powerful extreme factor are involved in the response of the organism to burn. It should be noted that immediately after burn there appears an increased permeability of capillaries followed by extravasation of formed elements and liquid blood. The study of the participation of metals in evolution of oxidation-reduction processes is subdivided into two periods. During the first of them, from 1897 to 1937, the significance of manganese, iron, titanium, molybdenum, vanadium and copper in most important processes of metabolism was discovered. The second period, from 1937 to 1977, was devoted to the study of the role of metals in individual representatives of oxidoreductases and their evolution during transition of organisms from anaerobiosis to aerobiosis. In this evolution of special importance were bimetallic enzymes, such as nitrogenase, some nitrate reductases and hydrogenases, carbon dioxide reductase, xanthine oxidase, cytochrome oxidase. Owing to their ability to accomplish conjugated oxidation-reduction reactions, these oxidoreductases were transitional to still more complicated polymetallic systems with whose participation the electron transfer chains in subcellular structures were formed.  相似文献

Filtration efficiency of Ni(II) from aqueous solution using pristine and modified MWCNTs filters was investigated as a function of Ni(II) ion concentration, pH, and filter mass. MWCNTs were synthesized by CVD method and modified using two complementary treatments, purification (using a mixture of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide) and functionalization (using nitric acid). The effect and mechanism of each treatment on the structural integrity of pristine MWCNTs has been studied. Morphology of the pristine and modified filters was investigated by Raman Spectrometry (RS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometry and Thermogravimetric analysis. It was found from Raman spec-tra that the ratio of the intensity of D-band to that of G-band decreased by purification process, and increased by functionalization process. The adsorption mechanism of Ni(II) onto the surface functional groups of modified MWCNTs was confirmed by FTIR spectrum. The filtration results showed that the removal efficiency of Ni(II) is strongly dependent on pH and could reach 85%at pH=8. Also, modified MWCNT filters can be reused through many cycles of regeneration with high performance. Functionalized MWCNTs filters may be a promising adsor-bent candidate for heavy metal removal from wastewater.  相似文献

Spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) following intrahippocampal kainic acid (KA) injection have been described in a previous paper from our laboratory. The SRSs are clinically similar to the seizures induced by kindling the amygdala and we suggested that the amygdala plays a role in initiating the SRSs. Accordingly, the present paper examines the effect of amygdaloid lesions on intrahippocampal KA-treated rats. There were short- and long-term effects. (1) Short-term: the toxicity of KA was increased in lesioned animals. Status epilepticus followed by death of the animals was evoked with half of the dose required to cause the same effect in intact rats. Moreover, a gross haematuria was encountered 6-12 h after KA injection. This was not observed in non-lesioned rats even following the highest KA doses. (2) Long-term: amygdaloid lesions delayed the occurrence of the SRSs, reduced their incidence and modified their expression. In lesioned animals seizures began with a period of tonic immobility with no sign of the masticatory movements seen in intact animals. Histological examination of the KA-induced lesions did not show any major differences between lesioned and intact animals. It is suggested that the short-term effects are due to an unspecific effect on homeostatic mechanisms, whereas the long-term ones reflect a specific involvement of the amygdala in the late appearing seizures.  相似文献
