Effects of Crystal Orientation and Temperature on the Strength of Sapphire   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The flexure and compressive strengths of sapphire are dependent on crystal orientation and temperature. Most notably, the c -axis compressive strength decreases below the tensile strength at temperatures >400°C and falls to 2% of the room-temperature compressive strength at 800°C. Loss of compressive strength complicates the interpretation of flexure tests. Four-point flexure specimens with no component of c -axis compression increase in strength at temperatures >500°C; however, specimens that have c -axis compression decrease in strength. It has been observed that c -axis compression causes twinning on rhombohedral crystal planes. Intersection of twins on different rhombohedral planes causes fracture that leads to mechanical failure.  相似文献

Xylene is the traditional diluent solvent for formulating epoxy/amine paints used in protective coatings and linings. Currently, it is under regulatory pressure because it is on the hazardous air pollutant (HAP) list and it is also a volatile organic compound (VOC). Ketones and acetate esters are powerful solvents, but their use is limited by their reaction with the amine curatives before paint application. Tert-butyl acetate (t-BAc) proposed as a VOC-exempt solvent, is a nonreactive, non-HAP solvent suitable for both the epoxy resin and amine curative sides of a two-component epoxy system. Molecular modeling predicts very low reactivity of the t-BAc ester functionality with amine nucleophiles as a result of steric hindrance. Long-term aging studies with amine curatives in t-BAc solutions confirm these theoretical results. Kinetics of the reaction of amines with t-BAc and its n-butyl acetate isomer support the view that steric hindrance plays a major role in amine solution stability. The need for a multiple-target compound selectivity programme led to the establishment of a single robotic system that produces a compound's serial dilution and its distribution to multiple replicate assay plates. A Genesis RSP 150 integrated into a Zymate Laboratory Automation System XP produced the serial dilutions, and the subsequent replicate assay plates were produced quickly and accurately by an efficient use of the carousels and rapid plate. Currently, this process allows for the production of over 200 serial dilution assay plates in a workday.  相似文献

This paper presents the development of the free convection boundary-layer flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid near the lower stagnation point of a cylindrical body which is subjected to a sudden change in surface temperature. Analytical solutions for both small (unsteady) and large (steady) values of time have been obtained for the boundary-layer equations. These equations are then integrated numerically.  相似文献

This paper presents a methodology for modeling microstructures of fibrous porous media with curved fibers. The developed methodology utilizes implicit periodic surface model coupled with the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization to construct the porous microstructures. The fibers profile is represented by the periodic implicit surfaces and their orientation and curvature are determined by GA optimization. To reconstruct the microstructures with higher resemblance to the actual porous media GA is utilized to minimize the fibers stored strain energy and their intersection volumes. Coupling the image processing techniques to the geometry construction procedure the morphological and transport properties of the constructed microstructures are also determined. To verify the feasibility and the accuracy of the proposed methodology the microstructure of Freudenberg H2315 GDL is constructed and characterized. The presented methodology enables a parametric design approach. Thus, the effects of the microstructure's properties e.g., fibers diameter, fibers orientation and porosity of the porous structure on the transport properties of the fibrous media are investigated.  相似文献

We and others recently began studying brominated flame retardant levels in various matrices in the US including human milk and other food. This paper reviews the food studies. In our studies, ten to thirteen polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners were measured, usually including BDE 209. All US women's milk samples were contaminated with PBDEs from 6 to 419 ng/g, lipid, orders of magnitude higher than levels reported in European studies, and are the highest reported worldwide. We compared our market basket studies of meat, fish and dairy products with other US food studies of meat and fish. US studies showed somewhat higher levels of PBDEs than reported elsewhere. Fish were most highly contaminated (median 616 pg/g), then meat (median190 pg/g) and dairy products (median 32.2 pg/g). However, unlike some European countries where fish predominates, dietary intake of PBDEs in the US is mostly from meat, then fish and then dairy products. Broiling can decrease the amount of PBDEs per serving. We also measured levels of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), another brominated flame retardant, in human milk. The levels are lower than PBDEs, 0.16-1.2 ng/g, similar to European levels, unlike PBDEs where US levels are much higher than European levels.  相似文献
