A new national initiative, Fuel Cells UK, has been established to act as a focus for the development of a fuel cell industry in Britain, and to liaise and partner more effectively with national and regional initiatives around the world. An asymmetric double cantilever beam test was used to determine the ability of carbon nanotubes with varying chemistry along their lengths, that is, diblock nanotubes, to compatibilize the polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS/PMMA) interface. PS molecules were grafted primarily to one of the blocks to cause that block to migrate to the PS phase since otherwise both blocks would prefer to reside in PMMA. Fracture toughnesses increased monotonically with increasing diblock carbon nanotube concentration and maximum values were like those for block copolymer-reinforced interfaces while single-chemistry nanotubes showed no reinforcing effect. However, the abrupt increase in fracture toughness with added compatibilizer indicative of a transition to crazing was not found consistent with nanotubes suppressing crazing in homopolymers. Scanning electron microscopy images of the fractured surfaces show agglomerates of carbon nanotubes present which are likely limiting the efficacy of carbon nanotubes at toughening the interface.  相似文献

The General Dynamic Equation for aerosol evolution is converted into a set of ordinary differential equations for the moments Mm by multiplying by vm and integrating over particle volume, v. Closure of these equations is achieved by assuming a functional form for the moments, instead of the usual assumption of a functional form for the size distribution itself. Specifically, it is assumed that In(Mm) can be expressed as a pth-order polynomial in m. The time-dependent coefficients in the polynomial are found by solving (p + 1) differential equations numerically. The case p = 2 corresponds to the assumption that the size distribution is always log-normal but comparison with accurate solutions shows that increasing p increases the accuracy of the method for all processes considered (removal, condensation and Brownian coagulation). Particle loss during evaporation and achievement of a self-preserving form for Brownian coagulation are also considered. Inversion of the moment expression to obtain the size distribution using the Mellin inversion formula is discussed.  相似文献

Dose‐associated effects of rosuvastatin on the metabolism of apolipoprotein (apo) B‐100 in triacylglycerol rich lipoprotein (TRL, d < 1.019 g/ml) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) and of apoA‐I in high density lipoprotein (HDL) were assessed in subjects with combined hyperlipidemia. Our primary hypothesis was that maximal dose rosuvastatin would decrease the apoB‐100 production rate (PR), as well as increase apoB‐100 fractional catabolic rate (FCR). Eight subjects received placebo, rosuvastatin 5 mg/day, and rosuvastatin 40 mg/day for 8 weeks each in sequential order. The kinetics of apoB‐100 in TRL and LDL and apoA‐I in HDL were determined at the end of each phase using stable isotope methodology, gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry, and multicompartmental modeling. Rosuvastatin at 5 and 40 mg/day decreased LDL cholesterol by 44 and 54 % (both P < 0.0001), triacylglycerol by 14 % (ns) and 35 % (P < 0.01), apoB by 30 and 36 % (both P < 0.0001), respectively, and had no significant effects on HDL cholesterol or apoA‐I levels. Significant decreases in plasma markers of cholesterol synthesis and increases in cholesterol absorption markers were observed. Rosuvastatin 5 and 40 mg/day increased TRL apoB‐100 FCR by 36 and 46 % (both ns) and LDL apoB‐100 by 63 and 102 % (both P < 0.05), respectively. HDL apoA‐I PR increased with low dose rosuvastatin (12 %, P < 0.05) but not with maximal dose rosuvastatin. Neither rosuvastatin dose altered apoB‐100 PR or HDL apoA‐I FCR. Our data indicate that maximal dose rosuvastatin treatment in subjects with combined hyperlipidemia resulted in significant increases in the catabolism of LDL apoB‐100, with no significant effects on apoB‐100 production or HDL apoA‐I kinetics.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare effects on rat bone and uterus of estrogen depletion and exposure to the coplanar PCB-congener 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB #126) which exhibits anti-estrogenic properties. Half of the rats were ovariectomized (n = 20) and the other half were sham-operated. Ten of the ovariectomized rats and ten of the sham operated were exposed to PCB #126 (ip injections) for 3 months (total dose: 384 microgram/kg body wt). The remaining control rats were injected with corn oil (vehicle). The rats were killed and the tibiae and uteri were dissected. The left tibia was used for measurements of weight, length, and bone mineral density and the right for histomorphometrical analysis. The uteri were analyzed with respect to estrogen receptor content. PCB #126 exposure did not affect bone mineral density or trabecular bone volume of tibia in sham-operated rats. In ovariectomized rats PCB #126 exposure resulted in a decreased length and an increased bone mineral density of tibia. An obvious PCB #126 induced increase in osteoid surface was observed in sham-operated rats. The cortical thickness and the organic content of the tibia were also increased in these rats. In estrogen deprived tissue like the uteri of ovariectomized rats, PCB #126 showed weak estrogen agonistic activity. The observed effects of PCB #126 on bone and uterine tissues differed between ovariectomized and sham-operated rats.  相似文献

The enzyme arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT; EC 2.3.1.87) has been conventionally linked with the biosynthesis of melatonin within the pineal gland and retina. This study establishes that AANAT messenger RNA (mRNA) and functional enzyme occurs within the pars tuberalis (PT) and to a lesser degree within the pars distalis (PD) of the sheep pituitary gland; expression in these tissues is approximately 1/15th (PT) and 1/300th (PD) of that in the ovine pineal gland. AANAT mRNA in the PT appears to be expressed in the same cells as the Mel1a receptor. No evidence was obtained to indicate that either PT or PD cells have the ability to synthesize melatonin, suggesting that this enzyme plays a different functional role in the pituitary. We also found that cAMP regulation of the abundance of AANAT mRNA differs between the PT and pineal gland. Forskolin (10 microM) has no effect on pineal AANAT mRNA levels, yet represses expression in the PT. This suppressive influence could be mediated by ICER (inducible cAMP response early repressor), which is induced by forskolin in both tissues. Although it appears that the specific function and regulation of AANAT in the pituitary gland differ from that in the pineal gland, it seems likely that AANAT may play a role in the broader area of signal transduction through the biotransformation of amines.  相似文献

Examined the hypothesis that students would show performance impairment when they were exposed to teachers who were pressured to maximize student performance level and who used controlling strategies. For this purpose, 4th-grade teachers and their students participated in a field experiment in which teachers either were pressured to maximize student performance or were told simply to help their students learn. In addition, the teaching sessions were videotaped to assess teachers' use of controlling strategies, as rated by blind coders. Following the teaching sessions, student performance on tasks initially taught by teachers as well as on a generalization task was assessed by blind experimenters. As predicted, the data indicated that students evidenced performance impairment during the subsequent testing session only when they were exposed to pressured teachers using controlling strategies.
