The Chilean State delivers essential meal services at schools for low‐income students. Junta Nacional de Auxilio Escolar y Becas, the institution in charge of covering 1,300,000 children, leases the meal service to private enterprises. We developed an integer linear programming model to assign the meal contracts, in a process known as combinatorial auctions. The resulting model, which is NP‐hard, led to significant improvements in efficiency and also contributed to making the process more transparent. The results are apparent in substantial improvements in quality and coverage of the service, and important savings to the country, which are equivalent to feeding 300,000 children in addition. We developed techniques to solve the combinatorial models and also to analyze and compare multiple scenarios to find robust solutions. For the objective function of this problem, we analyzed several options to consider different kinds of social benefits. In this paper, we describe the problem, the methodology and the results. We also present empirical results based on 6 years of experience. Finally, we discuss the relevance and impact of using operations research in these central issues in developing countries.  相似文献

This paper extends the literature on the evolution of norms with anagent-based modelcapturing a phenomenon that has been essentially ignored, namely thatindividual thought – orcomputing – is often inversely related to the strength of a social norm.Once a norm isentrenched, we conform thoughtlessly. In this model, agents learn how tobehave (what normto adopt), but – under a strategy I term Best Reply to Adaptive SampleEvidence – they also learnhow much to think about how to behave. How much they are thinking affects howthey behave,which – given how others behave – affects how much they think. Inshort, there is feedbackbetween the social (inter-agent) and internal (intra-agent) dynamics. Inaddition, we generate thestylized facts regarding the spatio-temporal evolution of norms: localconformity, global diversity,and punctuated equilibria.  相似文献

Assessed the effects of changing to low tar/nicotine/carbon-monoxide-(CO)-yield cigarettes on alveolar carbon monoxide over a 5–6 wk period for 40 adult chronic smokers of high tar/nicotine/CO cigarettes. Ss were assigned to either a 5-wk step-wise brand-reduction treatment or to a delayed-treatment control group. Ss were assessed for (a) resting CO body burden and CO uptake per cigarette and (b) smoking topography and rate. Although CO uptake was significantly lower after Ss smoked low tar/nicotine/CO cigarettes than after smoking their original brand, resting CO body burden did not change. We discuss variants of online scheduling on identical and uniformly related machines, where the objective is to minimize the makespan. All variants are such that some information regarding the input is provided in advance, and therefore these models are known as semi-online problems. Algorithms are analyzed with respect to the competitive ratio. We discuss the benefit arising from different kinds of available information and find that almost all variants allow one to reduce the competitive ratio significantly compared to the best possible competitive ratio for the corresponding pure online problem.  相似文献

We study the scheduling problem of minimizing the maximum starting time on-line. The goal is to minimize the last time that a job starts. We show that while the greedy algorithm has a competitive ratio of Θ (log m), we can give a constant competitive algorithm for this problem. We also show that the greedy algorithm is optimal for resource augmentation in the sense that it requires 2m − 1 machines to have a competitive ratio of 1, whereas no algorithm can achieve this with 2m − 2 machines.  相似文献

This paper describes the nature of mathematical discovery (including concept definition and exploration, example generation, and theorem conjecture and proof), and considers how such an intelligent process can be simulated by a machine. Although the material is drawn primarily from graph theory, the results are immediately relevant to research in mathematical discovery and learning.The thought experiment, a protocol paradigm for the empirical study of mathematical discovery, highlights behavioral objectives for machine simulation. This thought experiment provides an insightful account of the discovery process, motivates a framework for describing mathematical knowledge in terms of object classes, and is a rich source of advice on the design of a system to perform discovery in graph theory. The evaluation criteria for a discovery system, it is argued, must include both a set of behavior to display (behavioral objectives) and a target set of facts to be discovered (factual knowledge).Cues from the thought experiment are used to formulate two hierarchies of representational languages for graphy theory. The first hierarchy is based on the superficial terminology and knowledge of the thought experiment. Generated by formal grammars with set-theoretic semantics, this eminently reasonable approach ultimately fails to meet the factual knowledge criteria. The second hierarchy uses declarative expressions, each of which has a semantic interpretation as a stylized, recursive algorithm that defines a class by generating it correctly and completely. A simple version of one such representation is validated by a successful, implemented system called Graph Theorist (GT) for mathematical research in graph theory. GT generates correct examples, defines and explores new graph theory properties, and conjectures and proves theorems.Several themes run through this paper. The first is the dual goals, behavioral objectives and factural knowledge to be discovered, and the multiplicity of their demands on a discovery system. The second theme is the central role of object classes to knowledge representation. The third is the increased power and flexibility of a constructive (generator) definition over the more traditional predicate (tester) definition. The final theme is the importance of examples and recursion in mathematical knowledge. The results provide important guidance for further research in the simulation of mathematical discovery.  相似文献

The present experiment examined whether ondansetron, co-administered with continuous cocaine, would block the down regulation of accumbens 5-HT3 receptors. Rats were exposed to a 14-day pretreatment regimen that involved the continuous infusion of 40 mg kg(-1) day(-1) cocaine or 0.9% saline via a subcutaneously implanted osmotic minipump. In addition to the continuous cocaine or saline administration, all subjects received daily subcutaneous (s.c.) injections of either vehicle or 0.1 mg kg(-1) ondansetron for the entire 14-day pretreatment regimen. The rats were then withdrawn from this pretreatment regimen for seven days, and slices from the nucleus accumbens obtained. The slices were perfused with 25 mM K+ in the absence and presence of 0, 12.5, 25, or 50 microM m-Chlorophenyl-biguanide HCl (mCPBG). The efflux samples were assayed for dopamine content by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection. Continuous cocaine administration significantly attenuated the ability of mCPBG to facilitate K+-induce dopamine overflow compared to saline control rats. In addition, the rats that received ondansetron and cocaine during the 14-day pretreatment period, the ability of mCPBG to enhance K+ stimulated dopamine release was not significantly different from the saline control subjects. For all groups except the cocaine alone group, the effects of mCPBG on K+ stimulated dopamine release were Ca2+ dependent, suggesting that these effects are receptor mediated. These results suggest that continuous cocaine administration functionally down-regulates 5-HT3 receptors in the nucleus accumbens, and that this down-regulation can be blocked by chronic ondansetron administration. Hence, a functional down regulation of accumbens 5-HT3 receptors represents a significant contribution to the tolerance induced by continuous cocaine administration.  相似文献

A real-time cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system has been implemented using digital signal processing (DSP) technology. The system enables real-time acquisition, processing, and display of ungated cardiac movies at moderate video rates of 20 images/s. A custom graphical user interface (GUI) provides interactive control of data acquisition parameters and image display functions. Images can be compressed into moving-picture experts group (MPEG) movies, but are displayed on the console without compression during the scan. Compared to existing real-time MRI systems, implementation with DSP's allows rapid parallel computations, fast data transfers, and greater system flexibility, including the ability to scale to multiple channels, at the expense of somewhat higher component cost.  相似文献

The CD94/NKG2 receptors expressed by subpopulations of NK cells and T cells have been implicated as receptors for a broad range of both classical and nonclassical HLA class I molecules. To examine the ligand specificity of CD94/NKG2 proteins, a soluble heterodimeric form of the receptor was produced and used in direct binding studies with cells expressing defined HLA class I/peptide complexes. We confirm that CD94/NKG2A specifically interacts with HLA-E and demonstrate that this interaction is dependent on the association of HLA-E with peptide. Moreover, no interaction between CD94/NKG2A and classical HLA class I molecules was observed, as assayed by direct binding of the soluble receptor or by functional assays using CD94/NKG2A+ NK cells. The role of the peptide associated with HLA-E in the interaction between HLA-E and CD94/NKG2A was also assessed. All class I leader sequence peptides tested bound to HLA-E and were recognized by CD94/NKG2A. However, amino acid variations in class I leader sequences affected the stability of HLA-E. Additionally, not all HLA-E/peptide complexes examined were recognized by CD94/NKG2A. Thus CD94/NKG2A recognition of HLA-E is controlled by peptide at two levels; first, peptide must stabilize HLA-E and promote cell surface expression, and second, the HLA-E/peptide complex must form the ligand for CD94/NKG2A.  相似文献

A tissue culture bilayer system that mimics some aspects of early alveolar infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis was developed. This model incorporates human lung epithelial type II pneumocyte (A549) (upper chamber) and endothelial cell (lower chamber) layers separated by a microporous membrane. This construction makes it possible to observe and quantify the passage of bacteria through the two layers, to observe the interaction of the bacteria with the various cell types, and to examine the basic mechanisms of immune cell recruitment to the site of infection. After 10(7) organisms were added to the upper chamber we microscopically observed large numbers of bacteria attached to and within the pneumocytes and we determined by viable-cell counting that a small percentage of the inoculum (0.02 to 0.43%) passed through the bilayer into the lower chamber. When peripheral blood mononuclear cells were added to the lower chamber, microscopic examination indicated a migration of the mononuclear cells through the bilayer to the apical surface, where they were seen associated with the mycobacteria on the pneumocytes. The added complexity of the bilayer system offers an opportunity to define more precisely the roles of the various lung cell types in the pathogenesis of early tuberculosis.  相似文献
