Effect of surface — Active agents on the fine grinding kinetics of fired corundum pellets

Conclusions During the grinding of corundum pellets (briquettes) without additives in the initial period (up to 13 h) the low fired materials are more rapidly ground. With an increase in the dispersion grinding of low fired pellets is retarded. Additions of silicone substances during the grinding of corundum pellets fired at different temperatures, reducing the resistance to grinding, speed up the grinding process. The most effective of the additives investigated proved to be silicone liquid GkZh-94. The grinding process with additions of surface-active agents, and without them, for pellets fired at different temperatures obeys the basic law of grinding kinetics. Between the parameters m and k in this equation for corundum pellets we detected an inverse relationship which agrees well with theoretical ideas.Translated from Ogneupory, No. 7, pp. 42–46, July, 1973.     

Calculation of the liquid — Vapor phase equilibrium of nonideal systems

Conclusions It has been found that approximations made to equilibrium data by means of Auslander's equation ensure high accuracy during calculation, but in some cases lead to a discontinuity in the functions so that significant errors are obtained.Equations have been derived which exclude these discontinuities and they have been used for compiling a program (on a Minsk-2 electronic computer) for treating experimental data on phase equilibrium in binary mixtures and on the dependence of the boiling point on composition for multicomponent mixtures.Translated from Khimiya i Tekhnologiya Topliv i Masel, No. 2, pp. 41–44, February, 1969.     

Low-Temperature Crystal Growth in Aqueous Systems

The conditions for the crystal growth of various substances (salts, amino acids, and others) in aqueous systems between the eutectic (0°C) and room temperatures were studied. The ingots prepared by freezing solutions of required compositions were used as source material for crystal growth (recrystallization). The growth and properties of the crystals were shown to be controlled by the supersaturation which is maintained at the desired level by means of fractional ingot melting.

Toroidal structures due to anisotropy of DNA-like molecules

We suggest that toroidal structures in the state of psi-condensation of DNA may be caused by anisotropy on a meso-scale of several thousand A, the conformation of a DNA-molecule being determined by its elasticity and neutralization of phosphate charge. We model a molecule of B-DNA on an anisotropic elastic rod subject to a torque, and make the numerical simulation of the model that reveals that under appropriate conditions, which may be effected in experimental setting by changing the concentration of polymeric solutions, there are toroidal structures having the size of a few persistence lengths, in agreement with the experimental data. On changing the elastic modulii or characteristics of the counterion layer, we see the toroidal structures turn into the spherical ones. To understand the function of anisotropy it would be interesting to investigate the Z-DNA as regards psi-condensation.     

Plasma nitridation of thin SiO2 films: AES, ELS and IR study

Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron loss spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy are used to investigate the nitridation of thin (10–22 nm) thermal SiO₂ in RF soft NH₃ plasma. It is found that plasma action at a substrate temperature of 573 K can completely nitridate the thermal oxide to an oxynitride layer. The layers obtained are macroscopic mixtures of two phases SiO₂ and Si₃N₄, rather than amorphous polymers of Si, O and N.     

Reducing the phenol content in coal tar and in coke-plant water flows

The influence of coking-product pyrolysis within the coke furnace on the phenol content in coal tar and in the water in the gas-collection cycle and at the biochemical-treatment unit is considered.
