The clinical use of positron emission tomography (PET) is expanding rapidly in most European countries. It is likely therefore that patients receiving the tracer fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) will be discharged to come into contact with family members, members of the public and ward staff. There are few direct measurements on which to base any recommendations with regard to radiation protection, and so we have measured the dose rates from patients undergoing clinical PET examinations in our centre. Seventy-five patients who underwent whole-body and brain 18FDG PET examinations were studied. Dose rates were measured at 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 m from the mid thorax on leaving the department. The median administered activity was 323 MBq with a 95th percentile value of 360 MBq. The median dose rates measured at the four distances were 90.0, 35.0, 14.0 and 5.0 microSv h-1 (the median dose rates per unit administered activity at 2 h post injection were 0.31, 0.11, 0.04 and 0.02 microSv h-1 MBq-1). The corresponding 95th percentile values were 174.0, 69.0, 29.0 and 7.5 microSv h-1 (0.43, 0.2, 0.08 and 0.03 microSv h-1 MBq-1). A number of social situations were modelled and an annual dose limit of 1 mSv was used to determine whether restrictive behavioural advice was required. In the case of nursing staff on wards a value of 6 mSv was regarded as the annual limit, which translates to a daily limit of approximately 24 microSv. There is no need for restrictive advice for patients travelling by public or private transport when they leave the department 2 h after the administration of 18FDG. Similarly, there is no need for restrictive advice with regard to their contact with partners, work colleagues or children of any age, although it should be stressed that children should not accompany the patient to the scanning department. The only possible area of concern is in an oncology ward, where patients may be regularly referred for PET investigations and other high activity radionuclide studies and are partially helpless. Even in this area, however, it is unlikely that a nurse would receive a daily dose of more than 24 microSv. We conclude that there is no need for restrictive advice for patients undergoing 18FDG PET studies given the current administered activities.  相似文献

The activity of imipenem against Pseudomonas aeruginosa HUS-3 decreased by 16 times in the presence of substances eluted from siliconized latex urinary catheters (SLUCs). SLUCs did not inactivate imipenem or increase beta-lactamase activity. The outer membrane of P. aeruginosa HUS-3 grown in the presence of eluate lacked an OprD-like protein and expressed a new 50-kDa protein. The decreased activity of imipenem against P. aeruginosa in the presence of SLUCs is related to the loss of an OprD-like protein and the expression of a new outer membrane protein.  相似文献

The EEG inter- and intrahemispheric coherences (ICoh and HCoh) in the theta, alpha and beta bands were studied in an acallosal group (ACCG) of five children and a normal group of 30 sex- and age-matched children (NG) during resting and tapping conditions. Being functionally deficient, tapping in the ACCG was characterized by increased intertap intervals and variability (in right-hand tapping) and by variability together with decreased synchronization (in bimanual tapping). In the ACCG, frontal, central and parietal ICohs were shown to be smaller, while temporal ICohs were larger under all conditions (see also Koeda, T., Knyazeva, M., Jonkman, J., Njiokiktjien, C., De Sonneville, L., Vildavsky, V., 1995. The resting EEG in acallosal children: compensatory left hemisphere mechanisms? Electroencephalogr. Clin. Neurophysiol. 95, 397-407). The effect was most pronounced in the EEG beta band. The sagittal HCohs, including fronto-central, fronto-parietal, and centro-parietal HCohs within both hemispheres, were larger in the ACCG, whereas temporal HCoh (fronto-temporal, centro-temporal, parieto-temporal and occipito-temporal) were smaller, suggesting rearrangement of intracortical activity associated with callosal agenesis. Tapping induced an increase in ICoh and HCoh between frontal, central and parietal areas in the NG, and weak enhancement only in the left temporal HCoh in the ACCG. The beta band, the most reactive band in the NG, was 'silent' in the ACCG, suggesting deviant cortical function during motor activity as well.  相似文献

1. Alterations in vasoreactivity and endothelial cell function could underlie some of the vascular abnormalities in diabetes. To examine aspects of these phenomena we studied the effects of 4-6 weeks streptozotocin-induced diabetes in the rat on basal and angiotensin II (AII)-stimulated prostacyclin release from isolated lung, perfused at constant flow. In addition, pressure was monitored throughout the lung perfusion as an index of vasomotor tone. 2. The experiment also included lungs from groups of diabetic rats treated with either insulin or an aldose reductase inhibitor (imirestat), to determine whether these treatments influenced the development of any defects seen in untreated diabetes. 3. Despite some indication of a trend towards reduced prostacyclin release in lungs from diabetic rats, neither the basal nor AII-stimulated release was significantly different from that seen in tissues from control animals. There were no significant differences between groups in the average basal perfusion pressure and in either the absolute pressure response to AII or the time of this peak. 4. The area under the perfusion pressure curve during AII infusion was greater in lungs from diabetic animals than in controls indicating a prolonged vasoconstrictor response. This increased pressor response may indicate increased sensitivity of diabetic tissue to AII or a reduced production of vasodilators in response to the vasoconstriction. 5. Whichever mechanism was responsible, this alteration was prevented by insulin treatment but not by aldose reductase inhibition, implicating mechanisms probably unrelated to exaggerated polyol pathway flux.  相似文献

A sensitive, reliable method for the extraction, separation, and quantitation of methylprednisolone from rat brain is reported. The method can accurately quantitate methylprednisolone levels between 9.8 and 2500 ng/injection using a two-step HPLC separation and monitoring absorbance at 254 nm. A 90% extraction recovery of methylprednisolone (interday variation of 9.0% and an intraday variation of 0.0 to 7.7%) from rat cortex was obtained with a double extraction method using low toxicity solvents. These solvents are known to quantitatively extract the neutral lipids and phospholipids from brain. Combined with the ability to separate the neutral lipid and methylprednisolone fractions for further separation, and the ability to separate all phospholipid classes in the first run, this method offers great utility combined with the reliable, high extraction recovery and sensitive quantitation of methylprednisolone.  相似文献
