The DIC syndrome as a complication of the surgical treatment of urolithiasis in urology patients

The authors discuss the causes of the DIC syndrome in urological patients operated on for urolithiasis. They enumerate the factors predisposing to the DIC syndrome and causing it. The predisposing factors are chronic renal insufficiency and metabolic disorders caused by azotemia, infectious inflammatory complications of urolithiasis, and intoxication. The causes of the disease are massive blood loss involving disorders of the hemodynamics and blood rheology, bacterial shock, and other stress conditions. A protocol for treating this complication and validation of pathogenetic therapy is offered.     

Partner support and relapse in smoking-cessation programs.

46 Ss (mean age 37.4 yrs) in a smoking cessation program who were either married or living with a partner completed a questionnaire developed by the authors that assessed the frequency and perceived helpfulness of spouse interactions related to smoking cessation. An "experience helpfulness" (EH) score was calculated from the frequency and perceived helpfulness ratings of the events. Ss who were successful abstainers at 1-, 3-, and 6-mo posttreatment had significantly higher EH scores than either Ss who never quit or who quit and relapsed. A cluster analysis revealed that partners of successful abstainers were more reinforcing and less punishing of Ss' efforts than were the partners of Ss who had relapsed. Performance characteristics of a probability screening machine

Data on penetration of particles through single screens in a 0.5 m wide multiple-deck probability screening machine (Mogensen Sizer), using coal and sand—gravel mixtures, were correlated as a function of the operating variables. The correlations were successfully used to predict the output from the machine with multiple decks in place, both in the laboratory and in a field trial at a coal mine. Misplacement of fines due to adherence to larger particles was found to occur and to depend on the nature of the material and on its moisture content. This factor was not taken into account in the correlations and will lead to very significant errors in some circumstances.     

Simulating student flows to estimate school facility needs

This study explores the potential of using a simulation approach to estimate educational facility needs in settings where; (a) internal dynamics exist, and (b) alternative modes of organizing these dynamics are possible. A case study of using simulation to estimate lunchroom facility needs at two schools is presented for the purposes of demonstrating the feasibility of the simulation approach, and its advantages over existing techniques. Additional potential applications for facility planning are also discussed.
