A novel, unobtrusive and wearable, multiparameter ambulatory physiologic monitoring system for space and terrestrial applications, termed LifeGuard, is presented. The core element is a wearable monitor, the crew physiologic observation device (CPOD), that provides the capability to continuously record two standard electrocardiogram leads, respiration rate via impedance plethysmography, heart rate, hemoglobin oxygen saturation, ambient or body temperature, three axes of acceleration, and blood pressure. These parameters can be digitally recorded with high fidelity over a 9-h period with precise time stamps and user-defined event markers. Data can be continuously streamed to a base station using a built-in Bluetooth RF link or stored in 32 MB of on-board flash memory and downloaded to a personal computer using a serial port. The device is powered by two AAA batteries. The design, laboratory, and field testing of the wearable monitors are described.  相似文献

In order for quantitative applications to make full use of the ever-increasing number of Earth observation satellite systems, data from the various imaging sensors involved must be on a consistent radiometric scale. This paper reports on an investigation of radiometric calibration errors due to differences in spectral response functions between satellite sensors when attempting cross-calibration based on near-simultaneous imaging of common ground targets in analogous spectral bands, a commonly used post-launch calibration methodology. Twenty Earth observation imaging sensors (including coarser and higher spatial resolution sensors) were considered, using the Landsat solar reflective spectral domain as a framework. Scene content was simulated using spectra for four ground target types (Railroad Valley Playa, snow, sand and rangeland), together with various combinations of atmospheric states and illumination geometries. Results were obtained as a function of ground target type, satellite sensor comparison, spectral region, and scene content. Overall, if spectral band difference effects (SBDEs) are not taken into account, the Railroad Valley Playa site is a “good” ground target for cross calibration between most but not all satellite sensors in most but not all spectral regions investigated. “Good” is defined as SBDEs within ± 3%. The other three ground target types considered (snow, sand and rangeland) proved to be more sensitive to uncorrected SBDEs than the RVPN site overall. The spectral characteristics of the scene content (solar irradiance, surface reflectance and atmosphere) are examined in detail to clarify why spectral difference effects arise and why they can be significant when comparing different imaging sensor systems. Atmospheric gas absorption features are identified as being the main source of spectral variability in most spectral regions. The paper concludes with recommendations on spectral data and tools that would facilitate cross-calibration between multiple satellite sensors.  相似文献

The capacity of macrophages to influence directly and indirectly fibrinolytic processes in atherosclerosis was studied using macrophages isolated from atherosclerotic plaques of patients undergoing surgical repair of distal aortic and femoral arteries. These cells were characterized by their morphology, adherence, esterase positivity, and expression of CD14 antigen. Production of plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1) by plaque macrophages (6.7 +/- 2.7 ng/10(5) cells/24 hours [mean +/- SEM]) was significantly greater than PAI-1 production by blood monocytes isolated simultaneously from the same patients (1.8 +/- 1.5 ng/10(5) cells/24 hours). Production of tissue type plasminogen activator and urokinase type was not augmented compared to blood monocytes. Conditioned medium from cultured plaque macrophages significantly increased production of PAI-1 by endothelial cells (85 +/- 11% above basal) and vascular smooth muscle cells (25 +/- 10%) in vitro. This response was significantly greater than the response to monocyte-conditioned medium (endothelial cells 38 +/- 11%, vascular smooth muscle cells 2.5 +/- 2.0%). Stimulation of endothelial cell PAI-1 production by macrophage-conditioned medium was partially inhibitable by a monoclonal antibody to transforming growth factor-beta. Tissue type plasminogen activator production by endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells was not affected by plaque macrophage- or monocyte-conditioned medium. Urokinase type plasminogen activator production by endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells was undetectable in control medium and was augmented to similar levels in response to plaque macrophage- and monocyte-conditioned media. These results demonstrate upregulation of PAI-1 production by macrophages in atheromatous plaques and the capacity of soluble products from plaque macrophages to upregulate PAI-1 production by endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells in vitro. These data suggest that macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques may inhibit thrombolysis both directly and indirectly by effects of their soluble products on endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells.  相似文献

Asymmetric acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is anchored to the basal lamina (BL) of cholinergic synapses via its collagenic tail, yet the complement of matrix receptors involved in its attachment remains unknown. The development of a novel overlay technique has allowed us to identify two Torpedo BL components that bind asymmetric AChE: a polypeptide of approximately 140 kDa and a doublet of 195-215 kDa. These were found to stain metachromatically with Coomassie blue R-250, were solubilized by acetic acid, and were sensitive to collagenase treatment. Upon sequence analysis, the 140 kDa polypeptide yielded a characteristic collagenous motif. Another AChE-binding BL constituent, identified by overlay, corresponded to a heparan sulfate proteoglycan. Lastly, we established that this proteoglycan, but not the collagenous proteins, interacted with at least one heparin binding domain of the collagenic tail of AChE. Our results indicate that at least two BL receptors are likely to exist for asymmetric AChE in Torpedo electric organ.  相似文献

In the common goby, Pomatoschistus microps (Pisces, Gobiidae), males build nests under mussel shells where they care for the eggs until hatching. To investigate why male common gobies cannibalize their own eggs (filial cannibalism), we conducted a feeding experiment. Males given little food ate from their eggs more often than males given food in excess. However, males given mussel meat in excess did not eat more of their eggs than males fed with both mussel meat in excess and goby eggs. This may suggest that male common gobies cannibalize their eggs to obtain energy rather than essential nutrients lacking in other diets. Moreover, males ate their whole clutch if it was exceptionally small regardless of food treatment, suggesting that males stop investing in their clutch if its reproductive value is less than the cost of guarding it. Thus, whole clutch cannibalism and partial clutch cannibalism seem to be governed by different factors. Furthermore, poorly built nests were associated with starved males, suggesting that nest concealing is costly. There was an association between how well the nest was built and partial clutch filial cannibalism, suggesting that the appearance of the nest may indicate the condition of the male, and thus the risk of filial cannibalism. This study was undertaken to investigate the extent and the cost of orthodontic consultation and treatment of malocclusions in 19-year-olds at a Public Dental Service (PDS) clinic. A further aim was to evaluate the group of patients who discontinued their treatment prematurely. A total of 223 patient records were reviewed. The results showed that every second patient (106 of 223) was seen by a specialist for orthodontic evaluation. Of these, 54% (57 of 106) were treated with removable appliance, 29% (31 of 106) benefited from interceptive treatment without appliance and 12% (13 of 106) were referred to a specialist clinic. The costs for specialist consultations comprised 19% of the overall orthodontic treatment cost. Premature interruption of treatment with removable appliance was found in 17% (10 of 57) of the patients. This group consumed 12% of the overall orthodontic treatment cost. Reasons for discontinuing treatment included problems with co-operation and motivation and a lack of parental support. Seventy per cent of those who discontinued their treatment prematurely had been treated with an activator.  相似文献

Although nasal vaccination has emerged as an interesting alternative to systemic or oral vaccination, knowledge is scarce about the immune responses after such immunization in humans. In the present study, we have compared the kinetics and organ distribution of the antibody responses after nasal and oral vaccination. We immunized female volunteers nasally or orally with cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) and determined the specific antibody levels in serum and nasal and vaginal secretions, as well as the number of circulating antibody-secreting cells, before immunization and 1, 2, 3, 6, and 26 weeks thereafter. Nasal vaccination induced 9-fold CTB-specific immunoglobulin A (IgA) and 56-fold specific IgG antibody increases in nasal secretions, whereas no significant IgA increase was seen after oral vaccination. Both oral and nasal vaccination resulted in 5- to 6-fold CTB-specific IgA and 20- to 30-fold specific IgG increases in vaginal secretions. Strong serum responses to CTB were also induced by both routes of vaccination. A notable difference between nasal and oral vaccination was that the nasal route elicited a specific antibody response with a later onset but of much longer duration than did the oral route. We conclude from this study that the nasal route is superior to the oral route for administering at least nonliving vaccines against infections in the upper respiratory tract, whereas either oral or nasal vaccination might be used for eliciting antibody responses in the female genital tract.  相似文献

Short hospitalizations for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) require continuous nursing evaluation of patients' discharge education. Six institutions collaborated in surveying 300 postoperative patients with CABG to identify learning priorities and patients' perceptions of the effectiveness of discharge education. Data analysis from the self-administered questionnaire demonstrated consistent patient priorities across institutions. Differences in teaching methods and content did not affect perceived preparedness or importance scores. Regional experience demonstrates that variable teaching efforts meet patients' priorities and provide high overall patient preparedness for discharge. Patients with the shortest hospitalizations had higher preparedness scores.  相似文献
