Metastasis of malignant melanoma of the nasal mucosa to the small intestine

Malignant melanoma of the mucous membranes is rare and has a very poor prognosis. When localized in the nose, the tumor becomes apparent late in the course of the disease with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Distant metastases are uncommon, but any organ of the body can be involved. A case of a malignant melanoma of the nasal mucosa with metastasis to the small intestine is presented, and the natural history of the metastatic disease is discussed.     

Anomalous double blood supply to the lung

We report an unusual case in which an apparently normal upper lobe of the right lung was supplied by major systemic arterial and pulmonary arterial vessels. The anomalous artery arose from the descending aorta. Following interruption of this vessel, the machinery-like murmur previously present disappeared.     

Evaluation of the Del Mar Avionics automatic ambulatory blood pressure-recording device

We have the opportunity to evaluate a portable ambulatory device for the recording of sequential indirect arterial blood pressure and continuous electrocardiogram (Del Mar Avionics automatic ambulatory blood pressure recording device). With careful attention to technique, only 11% of systolic and 5% of diastolic blood pressure readings differed by more than 10 mm Hg as compared with a trained technician's observations simultaneously in the same arm. The device has been useful in the evaluation of borderline (labile) hypertension, hypertensive drug therapy programs, and various episodic cardiovascular phenomena--for example, vasodepressor syncope and pheochromocytoma crises.     

An instrument with digital readout for indirect determination of kVp

An electronic instrument with digital readout has been designed and constructed for indirect determination of the kVp applied to diagnostic x-ray tubes. The signals from two detectors exposed simultaneously to a differentially filtered x-ray beam are processed by analog computing circuitry to yield an output signal directly proportional to the applied peak kilovoltage. Theory and preliminary results are presented and discussed.     

Hydrocyanic acid levels in fermented cassava

The extent of loss of hydrocyanic acid during the fermentation of cassava tubers selected from both sweet and bitter varieties in the traditional method (whole unpeeled tubers) compared with the fermentation of peeled tubers and crushed pulps with or without the addition of water. Although the traditional fermentation is terminated after 3–4 days, in this study the fermentation was allowed to proceed for 8 days. Loss of cyanide from the whole tubers was 8047% after 8 days and was only 51–53% after 4 days. Loss of cyanide from the whole sweet tuber was not significant after 5 days. The loss of cyanide from the peeled tubers was comparable to the whole tubers after 8 days of fermentation. However, there was a marked decrease in free cyanide in the 1st day of fermentation of the peeled tubers compared to whole tubers. The loss in cyanide in the crushed pulp, which occurred primarily in the 1st day, appears to be due to the action of endogenous linamarase rather than hydrolysis by fermentation. When water is added to the crushed pulp the reduction in cyanide was 83–91% with marked decrease in bound cyanide in the 1st day of fermentation. It seems that autohydrolysis is enhanced by addition of water to the crushed pulp.
