Status of cerebral circulation in patients with hemiplegia of vascular and traumatic origin treated with decimeter therapy and an alternating magnetic field

Results of treating 181 patients for hemiparesis after a cerebral stroke or a craniocerebral injury by local exposure of the pathological focus to decimeter electromagnetic waves (DW) and alternating magnetic field (AMF) are presented. It is shown that these treatment methods improve the cerebral circulation and contribute to earlier restoration of the motor functions, especially, if used in combination with sulfide baths, therapeutic physical exercises and massage. The therapeutic effectiveness of the DW- and AMF-therapy is confirmed objectively by so informative examination methods, as rheoencephalography, ultrasonic dopplerography, and thermography.     

Metastasis of malignant melanoma of the nasal mucosa to the small intestine

Malignant melanoma of the mucous membranes is rare and has a very poor prognosis. When localized in the nose, the tumor becomes apparent late in the course of the disease with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Distant metastases are uncommon, but any organ of the body can be involved. A case of a malignant melanoma of the nasal mucosa with metastasis to the small intestine is presented, and the natural history of the metastatic disease is discussed.     

Urinary excretion of vanilmandelic acid in the glossalgia syndrome

Under observation there were 78 patients aged 41 to 70 years suffering from the glossalgia syndrome, as well as 25 clinically healthy subjects. An activation of the sympathoadrenal system was revealed in the patients. This was ascertained on the basis of the data on vanillylmandelic acid excretion with the urine. The excretion of that acid is known to be dependent on the intensity of the paraesthesias, the duration of the ailment and the character of concurrent visceral diseases. The results obtained are regarded as evidences of the participation of the vegetative nervous system in the mechanism of the glossalgia syndrome development.

Unconventional superconductivity and novel quantum order

Superconductors have many unusual properties not observed in normal metals. The superconducting state is attributed to the pairing of electrons. Conventional forms of superconductivity are produced by distortions in the underlying crystal structure of the material. Recently, it has become evident that not all forms of superconductivity can be explained in this way. The way pairing occurs has to be redressed in these materials. Of particular interest is the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity and the consequences this may have on pair formation.     

A Jordan control canonical form for singular systems

A canonical form for controllable singular systems modulo restricted system equivalence is presented. The canonical form respects the decomposition of the singular system into a regular and an impulsive part. The construction is based on Popov's control canonical form and on the Jordan canonical form recently developed by Hinrichsen and Prätzel-Wolters. Continuity properties are analysed and the cellular partition of the orbit space induced by the canonical form is briefly discussed.     

Investigation of optical damage in the nonlinear optical crystal (−)2-(α-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine

Abstract

Pulsed laser induced surface damage experiments were made on the cleaved (001) face of (—)2-(α-methylbenzylamino)-5-nitropyridine (MBANP) crystals using a pulse length of 25 ns FWHM. The highest single pulse damage threshold value was 24·2 J cm^?2 at a wavelength of 1064 nm for light polarized along the crystallographic a axis, whereas the lowest was 1·8 J cm^?2 at 532 nm for light polarized along the crystallographic b axis. The extent of the mechanical distortion of the (001) crystal plane consequent upon the absorption of a 25 ns FWHM, 10 J cm^?2 pulse from a Nd:YAG laser operating at the wavelength 1064 nm has been measured by a non-destructive and non-invasive technique.
