The use of Compton scattered gamma rays for tomography

A method of tomographic imaging of soft tissues by the use of Compton scattering of gamma rays is described. A highly collimated source (800 Ci of 60Co) and collimated detectors are used. Spatial resolutions of the order of 0.5 cm or better are achieved, with a density resoution of 2.0% to 4%. Experimental tests with dogs have shown internal organs in sagittal, coronal and transverse section. No contrast or radioactive material is required. Tests have shown that the regional dose for humans will be about 0.25 to 1 rad for one scan.     

Free phenols in chronic renal failure

Serum total free phenols are elevated in chronic renal failure, acute renal failure and hepatic coma. Being partly protein-bound, phenols behave during dialysis in a similar manner to considerably larger molecules which are not protein-bound. In view of their potential toxicity they should be considered as an alternative to 'middle molecules'. Patients on regular hemodialysis have retention of phenols if their post-dialysis serum creatinine is above 6-7 mg/dl. Patients on short time dialysis have high pre-dialysis neutral phenol levels. Such levels are sufficiently high to suggest a role in the genesis of neurological symptoms, anemia and bone disease. Certainly pre-dialysis free phenols reflect adequacy of dialysis.     

Tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a 7-year-old child

Mucoepidermoid cancers are rare tumors that arise from the serous and mucous glands of the upper airway and salivary glands. Patients, especially children, with tumors that arise in the trachea and upper airways are often misdiagnosed as asthmatic and are treated with bronchodilators without resolution. A 7-year-old girl who had been diagnosed as asthmatic was subsequently found to have a mucoepidermoid tumor of the trachea. She underwent a successful tracheal resection and remains tumor free on follow-up bronchoscopy at 16 months.

The case of corpus callosum lipoma that was accidentally discovered during the routine brain examination by computed tomography had been described. The CT features of corpus callosum lipoma were described as well as differential-diagnostic differences with epidermoid cyst agenesia of corpus callosum and cyst of the pellucid septum (cavum vergae).     

Demonstration of identical expanded clones within both CD8+CD28+ and CD8+CD28- T cell subsets in HIV type 1-infected individuals

In HIV-1-infected individuals, the CD8+CD28- T cell subset is considerably expanded and is frequently the largest subset of T cells found in peripheral blood. It has been assumed, but not proven, that CD8+CD28- T cells derive from CD8+CD28+ T cells in vivo. To further study the ontogeny of CD8+CD28- T cells, we have performed analyses of the complementarity determining region 3 (CDR3) of the TCRB of CD8+CD28+ and CD8+CD28- T cells from the peripheral blood of HIV-1-infected individuals. When cells from the same individual were compared, expanded peaks in CDR3 length analysis within a given BV family were frequently observed at the same location in both CD8+ subsets (p < 0.001). Sequencing of cDNA corresponding to dominant peaks revealed the presence of identical expanded CD8+ T cell clones within both the CD28+ and CD28- subsets on eight of nine attempts. Our results show that CD8+CD28+ and CD8+CD28- T cells are phenotypic variants of the same lineage, most likely evolving from CD8+CD28+ to end-stage CD8+CD28- T cells.     

Cocaine stimulant effects vary with cocaine levels in medial prefrontal cortex

Rats treated with 10 mg kg-1 cocaine exhibited hyperlocomotion. Individual variation in the magnitude of this response was not correlated with serum cocaine concentration. Brain cocaine concentration, particularly in the medial prefrontal cortex, was highly correlated with the cocaine-induced locomotor stimulant effect. These findings indicate that variation in the uptake of cocaine into the brain is a critical variable in determining individual variation in its stimulant effects.
