Completed suicide among adolescents with no diagnosable psychiatric disorder

The characteristics of male adolescent suicide victims with (n = 84) and without (n = 8) a diagnosable psychiatric disorder were compared. Using psychological autopsy methods--interviews with victims' family members and health care professionals, and review of records (e.g., medical, school, police)-data were collected on all adolescent suicides in Finland during a 12-month period. Compared with adolescents with a psychiatric disorder, those with no disorder tended to come from less disturbed families, had shown less antisocial behavior, and had less frequently utilized health care and social services. Adolescents with no disorder more often communicated suicidal thoughts for the first time just before the suicide, and difficulties with the law (discipline problems) were more common precipitants than among those with a disorder. It was concluded that the process leading to suicide seems to be relatively short among male adolescents with no diagnosable psychiatric disorder. Communication of suicidal intent and problems with discipline are among the few clinical warning signs.     

Comparative evaluation of reactogenicity and immunogenicity of two dosages of oral tetravalent rhesus rotavirus vaccine. US Rhesus Rotavirus Vaccine Study Group

OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and immunogenicity of two dosages of tetravalent rhesus rotavirus vaccine (RRV-TV) and the effect of age at dosing. METHODS: A total of 195 infants were stratified by age into 2 groups, 6 to 12 weeks and 16 to 24 weeks, and randomly assigned to receive a single dose of placebo or RRV-TV containing either 4 x 10(5) or 4 x 10(6) plaque-forming units (pfu). Symptoms were recorded for 5 days after vaccination. Anti-rotavirus IgA and neutralizing antibody to human rotavirus serotypes G1 to G4 and RRV were measured in serum obtained pre- and postvaccination. RESULTS: Rates of fever > 38 degrees C (9%), diarrhea (6%) and vomiting (8%) were similar in all groups. IgA (69% vs. 49%, P = 0.02) and RRV (85% vs. 66%, P = 0.004) seroconversion rates were significantly higher in the 4 x 10(6) pfu vaccine group as were antibody titers to RRV (440.2 vs. 263.7, P = 0.04). Older infants demonstrated significantly higher seroconversion rates and antibody titers for IgA (71% vs. 52%, P = 0.03; and 110.6 vs. 54.8, P = 0.004) and RRV (92% vs. 66%, P = 0.05 and 498.3 vs. 205.6, P = 0.01) at either dose level than did the younger infants. There were no significant differences in seroconversion rates or antibody titers to human rotavirus types G1 to G4 between the two vaccination groups. CONCLUSIONS: RRV-TV at a dose of 4 x 10(6) pfu can be safely administered to infants 6 to 24 weeks of age. A single dose of 4 x 10(6) pfu of RRV-TV was significantly more immunogenic than a single dose of 4 x 10(5) pfu but did not improve responses to the human serotypes. Older vaccine recipients demonstrated significantly higher IgA and neutralizing antibody seroconversion rates and antibody titers than younger infants independent of dosage.     

Relationship between internal calcium and outward current in mammalian ventricular muscle; a mechanism for the control of the action potential duration?

In sheep and calf ventricular bundles, increasing the internal calcium by increasing the frequency of voltage-clamping to plateau range potentials increased the time-independent outward current. This effect was more marked with higher [Ca]o, and was reduced if the Ca current blockers Verapamil or D 600 were used. 2. If the internal Ca was increased by the addition of cyanide and reduction of external sodium the outward current was also increased. The frequency-dependent increase in outward current also occurred in this Na-poor (12 mM) solution. 3. Tension measurement on the ventricular bundles showed that a Na-free solution with cyanide did not cause a contracture. On changing from Tyrode to a Na-free solution containing cyanide, and on changing back to Tyrode there was a potentiation of the twitch. 4. In Na-poor solution with cyanide, although no contracture was found, ECa was less positive, suggesting that under these circumstances Ca accumulates at the inner side of the membrane, but not around the myofibrils. 5. The prolongation of the action potential in Cl-free solution is frequency-dependent. A greater prolongation is seen at lower frequencies suggesting that Cl current is relatively more important for repolarization at lower frequencies of stimulation. 6. It is suggested that calcium at the inner side of the membrane sets the level of the background outward current. A feed-back mechanism on this basis is proposed for the control of the action potential duration. Various factors that could influence this basic mechanism are discussed.     

Developmental characteristics of histamine methyltransferase and phenylethanolamine-N-methyl-transferase of rat brain

The specific activity of histamine methyltransferase of rat brain increases rapidly from the 16th until the 25th day of gestation (7 days after birth). The specific activity of phenylethanolamine-N-methyl-transferase shows a rapid increase during the 1st and the 2nd week after birth, the adult values being obtained by the end of the 2nd week.     

Effects of counselor and client racial similarity on the counselor's response patterns and skills.

To test the hypothesis that factors of racial differences may mediate counselor–client interactions in terms of the counselor's attending and expressive response style and the delivery and type appropriateness of responses, 60 graduate level Black and White counselor trainees were asked to counsel both Black and White clients. As hypothesized, Ss' delivery scores and the type appropriateness of responses were significantly better under conditions of racial similarity with the clients. Both Black and White Ss were rated as being more expressive than attending in their response patterns toward Black clients. Findings have implications for counselor–client relationships and professional training programs for psychological counseling in multiracial settings. The ICRP working party on bioassay interpretation

In recent years there have been many developments in modelling the behaviour of radionuclides in the human body. The current generation of models is designed to be more 'realistic' than the previous generation of simple compartment models. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) uses these models to produce dose coefficients and recognises that there is a need to give more guidance on how these models can be used to interpret bioassay data. A working party has been set up to address the issue. This paper describes some of the problems, some approaches to solving the problems and the progress of the ICRP working party.     

Due Date Assignment in a Multistage Job Shop

In a Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) system, component lead times are generally assumed to be known and constant. Since a requirement of a MRP system is that components finish on time, slack is often built into component lead times to insure that actual job flowtimes equal planned job lead times. In this study, job characteristics and shop characteristics are investigated to determine which has a greater impact on predicting job flowtimes. This is accomplished by determining which characteristic most greatly influences the deviation of planned job lead times from actual job flowtimes. After identifying those factors which have the greatest influence on the job's flowtime, due date assignment rules are developed. A simulation study is then made to determine. which of the due date assignment rules perform best for varying product structures, as defined by various Bills of Materials (BOMs), and various shop conditions. Simulation test results are presented and discussed.
