Swords to plowshares: Shock wave applications to advanced lithography

xtreme ltra iolet ithography (EUVL) seeks to apply radiation in a wavelength region centered near 13 nm to produce microcircuits having feature sizes 0.1 micron or less. A critical requirement for the commercial application of this technology is the development of an economical, compact source of this radiation which is suitable for lithographic applications. A good candidate is a laser-plasma source, which is generated by the interaction of an intermediate intensity laser pulse (up to 10¹² W/cm²) with a metallic target. While such a source has radiative characteristics which satisfy the needs of an EUVL source, the debris generated during the laser-target interaction strikes at the economy of the source. Here, we review the use of concepts and computer modeling, originally developed for hypervelocity impact analysis, to study this problem.     

Cyclosporine in glomerular disease

Cyclosporine was introduced in 1981 as an immunosuppressive agent in renal transplantation. Its use was soon extended to the treatment of various glomerular disorders. In light of its known immunomodulating effects, the use of cyclosporine has been most prominent in those glomerular diseases thought to have an immune basis. The most careful studies of cyclosporine in glomerular diseases have been performed in the pediatric population with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (i.e., minimal change disease and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis), although data are accumulating regarding efficacy and safety in adults with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. In patients who are steroid-dependent, cyclosporine therapy can induce complete or partial remission in a significant proportion of cases; success rates in patients with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome are less encouraging. Treatment with cyclosporine allows for dose reduction or elimination of corticosteroids, and the consequent salutary effect on growth in the child and glucose and bone metabolism in all patients. Studies that suggest a potential benefit of cyclosporine in recurrent nephrotic syndrome in renal allografts and in other glomerular diseases are also discussed.     

Guanine nucleotide exchange factors for the Rho GTPases: a role in human disease?

The Rho family of low molecular weight GTP-binding proteins control important aspects of cell shape, adhesion, movement and growth. The DBL-homology (DH) protein family of upstream regulators of Rho GTPases has recently been identified, and deregulated expression of these proteins can have dramatic cellular consequences. This review examines the possible role of DH proteins and Rho GTPases in oncogenesis, metastasis and development.     

Children's ascriptions of knowledge to others.

Piaget believed that young children were egocentric and would ascribe their own knowledge to another. In contrast, Wimmer, Hogrefe, and Perner (1988) found that children did not perform egocentrically when assessing another's knowledge. The present study was carried out to determine which claim was right. A familiar object was secretly placed in a box, and a child and others either looked in the box or did not look. Two of the main findings were that (a) 6-year-olds were significantly better than 3- to 4-year-olds at assessing the other's knowledge, even though both assessed the other's perception correctly (p?p?     

A super element model for non-linear analysis of stiffened box structures

A numerical model for non-linear static and dynamic analysis of stiffened box structures is presented. The model is based on a new super element formulation which provides complete C¹ continuity for both plate and beam elements. Geometric and material non-linearities are included and the temporal equations are solved by the implicit Newmark-β method with Newton-Raphson subiteration. The new formulation has been applied to the static, vibration and transient analysis of various structures such as flat plates, folded plates and rectangular boxes. Both isotropic and beam stiffened structures are considered and the results obtained are compared with other available solutions. It is observed that the new super element formulation can provide reasonable solutions to both linear and non-linear problems of stiffened box structures. The mathematical formulation of the model is presented in this paper, while the numerical verifications are given in the companion paper.¹
