Studies of the simultaneous creep and oxidation of an Fe-lwt pct Al alloy at constant stresses of 16 to 26 MN/m2 in the temperature range 973 to 1073 K have shown that the steady state creep obeys a power law. The stress exponentn was found to be 6.9 for creep in an argon atmosphere(Po2 = 10-3 mbar). Values of the apparent activation energy for creep were in the range 225 to 351 kJ/mol and appeared to be dependent on theP o 2 of the test environment. Oxidationstrengthening (è decreasing) o°Curred at 998 K but only atP o 2 = 10-3 mbar and was primarily due to intergranular oxidation and the mechanical constraint of a strongly adherent scale. Oxidationweakening (è increasing), however, o°Curred at 973 to 1073 K in environments of the lowestP o 2 (10-9 and 10-5 mbar) and in the highestP o 2 (162 to 1013 mbar). The factors contributing to weakening are believed to be oxidation-induced vacancies, weakly adherent scales and the loss of solute strengthening aluminum through selective oxidation. M. H. It has been proposed that invariant pattern recognition might be implemented using a learning rule that utilizes a trace of previous neural activity which, given the spatio-temporal continuity of the statistics of sensory input, is likely to be about the same object though with differing transforms in the short time scale. Recently, it has been demonstrated that a modified Hebbian rule which incorporates a trace of previous activity but no contribution from the current activity can offer substantially improved performance. In this paper we show how this rule can be related to error correction rules, and explore a number of error correction rules that can be applied to and can produce good invariant pattern recognition. An explicit relationship to temporal difference learning is then demonstrated, and from this further learning rules related to temporal difference learning are developed. This relationship to temporal difference learning allows us to begin to exploit established analyses of temporal difference learning to provide a theoretical framework for better understanding the operation and convergence properties of these learning rules, and more generally, of rules useful for learning invariant representations. The efficacy of these different rules for invariant object recognition is compared using VisNet, a hierarchical competitive network model of the operation of the visual system.  相似文献

In a previous study we have demonstrated that endogenous neurotrophin 3 (NT3) is required for the survival of most sympathetic neurones in postnatal rats. However, the mechanisms underlying the action of NT3 on sympathetic neurones is not known. Neither is it understood whether NT3 is retrogradely transported from peripheral tissues or acts locally in an autocrine fashion. In the present study, NT3-mRNA was quantified in sympathetic effector tissues and NT3 protein was localized in intact and lesioned sympathetic nerves in rats. NT3-mRNA is expressed and developmentally regulated in many effector tissues including mesenteric arteries, salivary gland, heart and kidney but hardly detectable in the superior cervical ganglia of adult animals. The majority of sympathetic neurones express immunoreactivity for TrkA and TrkC in both neonatal and adult rats. Sympathetic somata are normally immunoreactive for NT3, but the immunoreactivity is abolished by systemic administration of NT3 antibodies or axotomy of postganglionic neurones, suggesting an accumulation of NT3 from extraneuronal sources. Furthermore, the detection of NT3-immunoreactivity in the internal carotid nerve as early as 3 h following a compression and only on the distal side indicates endogenous NT3 is retrogradely transported by sympathetic neurones. These studies provide evidence indicating that NT3, like nerve growth factor, is an effector tissue-derived neurotrophic factor for sympathetic neurones both during development and in the adult animal. Thus, we have provided a clear example that one type of neurone derives, through a retrograde transport mechanism, two neurotrophic factors simultaneously from its peripheral effector tissues.  相似文献

Watching a speaker's lips during face-to-face conversation (lipreading) markedly improves speech perception, particularly in noisy conditions. With functional magnetic resonance imaging it was found that these linguistic visual cues are sufficient to activate auditory cortex in normal hearing individuals in the absence of auditory speech sounds. Two further experiments suggest that these auditory cortical areas are not engaged when an individual is viewing nonlinguistic facial movements but appear to be activated by silent meaningless speechlike movements (pseudospeech). This supports psycholinguistic evidence that seen speech influences the perception of heard speech at a prelexical stage.  相似文献

Degeneration is the process whereby Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 loses the capacity to produce acetone and butanol after repeated vegetative transfers or in continuous culture. Two degenerate mutants (M5 and DG1) of C. acetobutylicum ATCC 824 do not contain the four genes (ctfA, ctfB, adc, and aad) for acetone and butanol formation. Strain ATCC 824 contains a 210-kb plasmid (pSOL1) which is absent in M5 and DG1. pSOL1 carries the four acetone and butanol formation genes. A restriction map of pSOL1 was constructed by using ApaI, SmaI, SstII, and NarI digestions. M5 and DG1 could be complemented for acetone and butanol formation by expressing the corresponding genes (ctfA, ctfB, and adc for acetone; aad for butanol) on the plasmid. Degeneration of this strain thus appears to be the result of pSOL1 loss.  相似文献

Using a meta-analytic approach, we recently reported that the rate of decline in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) with age in healthy women is greatest in the most physically active and smallest in the least active when expressed in milliliters per kilogram per minute per decade. We tested this hypothesis prospectively under well-controlled laboratory conditions by studying 156 healthy, nonobese women (age 20-75 yr): 84 endurance-trained runners (ET) and 72 sedentary subjects (S). ET were matched across the age range for age-adjusted 10-km running performance. Body mass was positively related with age in S but not in ET. Fat-free mass was not different with age in ET or S. Maximal respiratory exchange ratio and rating of perceived exertion were similar across age in ET and S, suggesting equivalent voluntary maximal efforts. There was a significant but modest decline in running mileage, frequency, and speed with advancing age in ET. VO2 max (ml . kg-1 . min-1) was inversely related to age (P < 0.001) in ET (r = -0.82) and S (r = -0.71) and was higher at any age in ET. Consistent with our meta-analysic findings, the absolute rate of decline in VO2 max was greater in ET (-5.7 ml . kg-1 . min-1 . decade-1) compared with S (-3.2 ml . kg-1 . min-1 . decade-1; P < 0. 01), but the relative (%) rate of decline was similar (-9.7 vs -9. 1%/decade; not significant). The greater absolute rate of decline in VO2 max in ET compared with S was not associated with a greater rate of decline in maximal heart rate (-5.6 vs. -6.2 beats . min-1 . decade-1), nor was it related to training factors. The present cross-sectional findings provide additional evidence that the absolute, but not the relative, rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity with age may be greater in highly physically active women compared with their sedentary healthy peers. This difference does not appear to be related to age-associated changes in maximal heart rate, body composition, or training factors.  相似文献

Advances in genetic engineering and expression systems have led to a rapid progress in the development of immunoglobulins fused to other proteins. These 'antibody fusion proteins' have novel properties and include antibodies fused to the cytokine interleukin-2. In the present review we describe strategies for construction of these antibody-interleukin-2 fusion proteins and discuss their in vitro and in vivo properties. Antibody-interleukin-2 fusion proteins retain both antibody associated functions such as antigen binding, complement activation and Fc gamma receptor binding as well as interleukin-2 associated functions such as the stimulation of proliferation of CTLL2 cells. In vivo, they produce strong potentiation of the host immune response against any associated antigen. In addition, these novel molecules are able to target tumor cells and produce a specific and effective T cell response capable of eliminating the tumor. These properties suggest that antibody-interleukin-2 fusion proteins will be useful in the diagnosis and/or treatment of human cancer as well as in the potentiation of human response against any associated antigen.  相似文献

The effect of bone plug length and Kurosaka screw (DePuy, Warsaw, IN) diameter on graft holding strength of the bone-tendon-bone construct was determined. Random length porcine bone plugs were assigned to fixation with 7 or 9 mm Kurosaka screws. Peak load to failure was determined. There was a significant decrease in peak load to failure of the 5-mm long bone plugs compared with longer bone plugs. No difference was found between longer lengths of bone plug in either the 7- or 9-mm screw diameter groups. The 9-mm diameter screws significantly increased peak load to failure for both 1- and 2-cm bone plug lengths.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To review the current literature and generate recommendations on the role of newer technology in the management of the unanticipated difficult airway. METHODS: A literature search using key words and filters of English language and English abstracted publications from 1990-96 contained in the Medline, Current Contents and Biological Abstracts databases was carried out. The literature was reviewed and condensed and a series of evidence-based recommendations were evolved. CONCLUSIONS: The unanticipated difficult airway occurs with a low but consistent incidence in anaesthesia practice. Difficult direct laryngoscopy occurs in 1.5-8.5% of general anaesthetics and difficult intubation occurs with a similar incidence. Failed intubation occurs in 0.13-0.3% general anaesthetics. Current techniques for predicting difficulty with laryngoscopy and intubation are sensitive, non-specific and have a low positive predictive value. Assessment techniques which utilize multiple characteristics to derive a risk factor tend to be more accurate predictors. Devices such as the laryngeal mask, lighted stylet and rigid fibreoptic laryngoscopes, in the setting of unanticipated difficult airway, are effective in establishing a patient airway, may reduce morbidity and are occasionally lifesaving. Evidence supports their use in this setting as either alternatives to facemask and bag ventilation, when it is inadequate to support oxygenation, or to the direct laryngoscope, when tracheal intubation has failed. Specifically, the laryngeal mask and Combitube have proved to be effective in establishing and maintaining a patent airway in "cannot ventilate" situations. The lighted stylet and Bullard (rigid) fibreoptic scope are effective in many instances where the direct laryngoscope has failed to facilitate tracheal intubation. The data also support integration of these devices into strategies to manage difficult airway as the new standard of care. Training programmes should ensure graduate physicians are trained in the use of these alternatives. Continuing medical education courses should allow physicians in practice the opportunity to train with these alternative devices.  相似文献

Mystixins are synthetic peptides that inhibit plasma leakage after tissue injury. We sought to determine the mechanism of the antileakage effect of mystixins, with particular reference to the formation of endothelial gaps in postcapillary venules. Intravenous administration of mystixin-7, a prototype heptapeptide (p-anisoyl-Arg-Lys-Leu-Leu-D-Thi-Ile-D-Leu-NH2), decreased Evans blue leakage induced by substance P (5 microg/kg i.v.) with an ED50 (95% confidence limits) of 130 (76-211) microg/kg in trachea and 52 (27-100) microg/kg in skin of anesthetized F344 rats. Leakage was decreased without a reduction in the number or size of endothelial gaps, visualized by silver deposits after silver nitrate staining. The number of silver deposits per tracheal endothelial cell was 11.4 +/- 0.2 (mean +/- S.E.) after vehicle pretreatment vs. 13.0 +/- 0.8 after mystixin-7 pretreatment (100 microg/kg i.v.). Silver deposit diameter was unchanged at 1.4 +/- 0.1 micron. Mean arterial blood pressure dropped by a maximum of 38% from baseline for approximately 10 min after mystixin-7 (100 microg/kg i.v.), then recovered to a plateau at about 13% below baseline. The antileakage effect of mystixin-7 pretreatment in vivo was also demonstrated in aldehyde-fixed vessels perfused in situ with Evans blue at constant flow (skin, 79% reduction; trachea, 49% reduction), which suggests that mystixin can reduce leakage independent of its hypotensive effect. We conclude that the antileakage effect of mystixin does not depend on reducing the number or size of endothelial gaps, but instead could be caused by residual hypotension, which reduces the negative interstitial fluid pressure toward zero, or clogging of endothelial gaps.  相似文献
