We have developed a model of the human lower extremity to study how surgical changes in musculoskeletal geometry and musculotendon parameters affect muscle force and its moment about the joints. The lines of action of 43 musculotendon actuators were defined based on their anatomical relationships to three-dimensional bone surface representations. A model for each actuator was formulated to compute its isometric force-length relation. The kinematics of the lower extremity were defined by modeling the hip, knee, ankle, subtalar, and metatarsophalangeal joints. Thus, the force and joint moment that each musculotendon actuator develops can be computed for any body position. The joint moments calculated with the model compare well with experimentally measured isometric joint moments. We developed a graphical interface to the model that allows the user to visualize the musculoskeletal geometry and to manipulate the model parameters to study the biomechanical consequences of orthopaedic surgical procedures. For example, tendon transfer and lengthening procedures can be simulated by adjusting the model parameters according to various surgical techniques. Results of the simulated surgeries can be analyzed quickly in terms of postsurgery muscle forces and other biomechanical variables. Just as interactive graphics have enhanced engineering design and analysis, we have found that graphics-based musculoskeletal models are effective tools for designing and analyzing surgical procedures. 相似文献

Innovations in biological evolution and in technology have many common features. Some of them involve similar processes, such as trial and error and horizontal information transfer. Others describe analogous outcomes such as multiple independent origins of similar innovations. Yet others display similar temporal patterns such as episodic bursts of change separated by periods of stasis. We review nine such commonalities, and propose that the mathematical concept of a space of innovations, discoveries or designs can help explain them. Students at the University of Derby are required to complete a year in industry as part of their Bachelor of Science degrees.This is a daunting prospect for some of them,and they can be reluctant to engage in the process of finding a placement position.As part of a second year module,students seeking placement are paired with students already on placement in a mentee/mentor relationship to support the second year students in their search for an internship.This arrangement helps the mentees by introducing them to potential role models close to their experience,receiving encouragement from peers and the inculcation of belief that it is possible to find a placement.The mentors also benefit from a recognition of how much they have learnt.However,there are difficulties in establishing and managing the scheme which should be recognised.This paper reports our experience over the last three years. 相似文献

One of the difficulties of surgical treatment of pulmonary atresia with patent septum by unifocalisation resides in the accurate diagnosis of the different collateral vessels to the lung in order to optimise the surgical approach: anterior or posterolateral thoracotomy, and to determine the type of operation: one or two stages repair. Conventional angiography, even using different views, cannot always give an accurate representation of the anatomy of the different collateral vessels, especially their relationship to the bronchial structures. Leishmania resistant to arsenicals and antimonials extrude arsenite. Previous results of arsenite uptake into plasma membrane-enriched vesicles suggested that the transported species is a thiol adduct of arsenite. In this paper, we demonstrate that promastigotes of arsenite-resistant Leishmania tarentolae have increased levels of intracellular thiols. High-pressure liquid chromatography of the total thiols showed that a single peak of material was elevated almost 40-fold. The major species in this peak was identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry as N1,N8-bis-(glutathionyl)spermidine (trypanothione). The trypanothione adduct of arsenite was effectively transported by the As-thiol pump. No difference in pump activity was observed in wild type and mutants. A model for drug resistance is proposed in which Sb(V)/As(V)-containing compounds, including the antileishmanial drug Pentostam, are reduced intracellularly to Sb(III)/As(III), conjugated to trypanothione, and extruded by the As-thiol pump. The rate-limiting step in resistance is proposed to be formation of the metalloid-thiol pump substrates, so that increased synthesis of trypanothione produces resistance. Increased synthesis of the substrate rather than an increase in the number of pump molecules is a novel mechanism for drug resistance. 相似文献

A new feature based shape optimization technique is presented that is capable of modifying the topology (configuration) and shape to reduce the area of 2-D components based on the stress distribution in the component. Shape optimization attempts to maximize material usage to achieve a uniform stress distribution near the allowable limit of the material. Features can be added to the component, or can be modified, in order to optimize the material usage. By using features as a basis for shape modification, the problem of component connectivity can be handled in a consistent, intelligent manner, and the problem of smoothness is eliminated. A program was written to implement the optimization technique and was applied to two example problems, including one from the literature that used a different modification technique. The other example illustrates shape modification capabilities with more complicated geometry. Results from both examples are compared to results obtained using other topological modification techniques. 相似文献

The morphology of TiN thin films on a steel surface produced by the process of laser ablation has been investigated. The process involves material removal from a titanium target by means of an ultraviolet excimer pulse laser. Both the target and the steel substrate are in an ammonia atmosphere and therefore the titanium atoms react with the nitrogen under the influence of a laser-induced plasma, and the product, which is TiN, is deposited on the surface of the steel. The investigation revealed that at the beginning of the process the TiN film is uniform; however, with increasing number of pulses, small micrometre-sized particles begin to appear on the surface and after a large number of pulses all the surface is covered with these particles. 相似文献
