The P300 component of the auditory evoked potential in the posttraumatic vegetative state

The dynamic studies of P300 component of the acoustic evoked potential were conducted in 12 patients in posttraumatic state of the autonomic system. The amplitude and time parameters of P300 were analyzed, its spatial distribution over the cortex, and features of generation. The obtained results were compared with the normative data. Significant changes in P300 in comparison with the normal characteristics were revealed in patients with the absence of conscious mental activity. These changes were maximally expressed when the state of patients was irreversible. In case of patients' outcome from the studied state the amplitude-temporal and topographic response characteristics tended to normalization but did not reach it completely. The obtained results allow us to consider the P300 component as one of the most informative indices in consciousness recovery after severe brain injury.     

A program system interpreting recording of long-latency evoked potentials

An algorithm and a personal computer program for automatic distinguishing between EEC records containing evoked and no potentials, based on the detected invariants reflecting experts' experience in evoked potential analysis have been developed. The efficiency of the programme (its high accuracy and speed, low volume) has been demonstrated in the system for automatic determination of the hearing level by long-latent evoked potentials. It is easily modifiable to identify evoked potentials from other modalities (visual, somatosensory ones) in the systems using the traditional and/or up-to-date computerized EEC equipment.     

Constitutive activation of photoreceptor guanylate cyclase by Y99C mutant of GCAP-1. Possible role in causing human autosomal dominant cone degeneration

Photoreceptor membrane guanylate cyclases (RetGC) are regulated by calcium-binding proteins, GCAP-1 and GCAP-2. At Ca2+ concentrations below 100 nM, characteristic of light-adapted photoreceptors, guanylate cyclase-activating protein (GCAPs) activate RetGC, and at free Ca2+ concentrations above 500 nM, characteristic of dark-adapted photoreceptors, GCAPs inhibit RetGC. A mutation, Y99C, in human GCAP-1 was recently found to be linked to autosomal dominant cone dystrophy in a British family (Payne, A. M., Downes, S. M., Bessant, D. A. R., Taylor, R., Holder, G. E., Warren, M. J., Bird, A. C., and Bhattachraya, S. S. (1998) Hum. Mol. Genet. 7, 273-277). We produced recombinant Y99C GCAP-1 mutant and tested its ability to activate RetGC in vitro at various free Ca2+ concentrations. The Y99C mutation does not decrease the ability of GCAP-1 to activate RetGC. However, RetGC stimulated by the Y99C GCAP-1 remains active even at Ca2+ concentration above 1 microM. Hence, the cyclase becomes constitutively active within the whole physiologically relevant range of free Ca2+ concentrations. We have also found that the Y99C GCAP-1 can activate RetGC even in the presence of Ca2+-loaded nonmutant GCAPs. This is consistent with the fact that cone degeneration was dominant in human patients who carried such mutation (Payne, A. M., Downes, S. M., Bessant, D. A. R. , Taylor, R., Holder, G. E., Warren, M. J., Bird, A. C., and Bhattachraya, S. S. (1998) Hum. Mol. Genet. 7, 273-277). A similar mutation, Y104C, in GCAP-2 results in a different phenotype. This mutation apparently does not affect Ca2+ sensitivity of GCAP-2. Instead, the Y104C GCAP-2 stimulates RetGC less efficiently than the wild-type GCAP-2. Our data indicate that cone degeneration associated with the Y99C mutation in GCAP-1 can be a result of constitutive activation of cGMP synthesis.     

Modification of T-cell activation marker expression by peripheral blood lymphocytes of persons living in radiation polluted territories

Was observed the increase cells level, which CD4+CD25+ and CD4+HLA-DR(+)-cells markers expression. Were revealed the increase of the apoptosis related CD4+CD+ cells level in peripheral blood.     

Metrological analysis of measuring systems in testing an anticipatory reaction to the position of a moving object

This study compared the effects of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors captopril versus enalapril on left ventricular (LV) muscle mass and LV systolic and diastolic function in 58 patients with primary glomerulonephritis and moderate chronic renal failure. The design was a 6-8 week titration phase and 6-month maintenance phase. Mean myocardial mass calculated by M-mode echocardiography in the captopril group was 153 +/- 26 g/m2 before, and 130 +/- 14 g/m2 after 6 months of treatment, in enalapril group 147 +/- 22 g/m2 before, and 126 +/- 23 g/m2 after 6 months of treatment (p < 0.05). LV ejection fraction, early and late transmitral flow velocities and early to late LV inflow velocities ratio were not significantly affected by both ACE inhibitors.     

Determination of metrological characteristics by pairwise comparison of measurement instruments of the same level of accuracy

Neuropsychological and motor functioning after unilateral anatomically guided posterior ventral pallidotomy. Preoperative performance and three-month follow-up

This study presents baseline and 3-month follow-up motor and neuropsychological data for 22 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) who underwent anatomically guided unilateral posterior ventral pallidotomy (PVP). Postsurgical improvements were seen in psychomotor speed, fine motor accuracy, and dyskinesia, whereas grip strength decreased on the side contralateral to the surgery. No change was detected in overall level of cognitive functioning, nor were changes demonstrated in memory, language, or working memory when the entire sample of patients was evaluated. When the group was divided on the basis of side of surgery, patients with left-sided pallidotomies showed a decline in verbal fluency. Patients and caregivers reported improvement in psychosocial functioning. These initial findings of improved motor performance and largely unaffected cognitive functions are consistent with results obtained with functional PVP and provide support for the use of anatomically guided posterior ventral pallidotomy in the treatment of motor symptoms of PD.     

The significance of fetal myocardial and skeletal muscle function as a factor affecting its viability

Histologic study of the heart and functionally active zones of skeletal muscles of the lower limbs of fetuses and newborns (71 cases) is undertakes to distinguish the factors affecting the viability of the fetus (new-born) and detect the total-system muscle tissue involvement after the general morphogenetic mechanism. The basic criteria of a pathological process caused by capillarotrophic myocardial insufficiency are dystrophy, necrosis, and sclerosis. Various forms of nonspecific prenatal myopathy were detected in the skeletal muscles; they were combined with symptoms of chronic myocardial hypoxia. A relationship between cardiovascular abnormalities and intrauterine and neonatal death is revealed.
