Natural dentitions of elderly people are often reduced and the remaining teeth are heavily restored. It is unknown whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied with this situation. To get more insight into this phenomenon 320 dentate non-institutionalized elderly subjects were clinically examined and interviewed by means of a questionnaire. Analysis of the data showed that only 13% of the subjects had at least a complete dentition from the right first molar to the left first molar; 50% had less than four occlusal units, 39% of the subjects were wearing a removable partial denture. Ninety per cent of the subjects was satisfied with the dental state and nearly all subjects mentioned they could chew well (97%), despite the fact that 91% of the subjects mentioned they had to deal with one or more dental discomforts. Satisfaction decreased significantly when the number of the occlusal units was reduced or a removable partial denture was present. The conclusion is drawn that although the dentitions of the elderly are often reduced they are, in general, satisfied with their dental state.  相似文献

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the variation of prothrombin times and international normalized ratio (INR) over 24 hours in humans. DESIGN: Prospective, parallel study. SETTING: University-affiliated general clinical research center. PATIENTS: Six patients receiving long-term warfarin therapy and six sex-matched controls. INTERVENTIONS: Warfarin was administered to the patients at 6:00 P.M. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Prothrombin times and INR were determined every 2 hours over 24 hours. Time of study entry, meals, and sleep cycles were controlled. A significant cosinor rhythm for prothrombin times and INR (p < or = 0.03) occurred in warfarin-treated patients, suggesting that diurnal variation occurs. The mean difference between the peak and trough prothrombin times was 1.8 +/- 0.9 seconds (range 0.8-3 sec) with a mean change of 9.3% +/- 3.7%. The peak prothrombin time and INR values occurred between 4:00 A.M. and 8:00 A.M. in five patients, and trough values between 6:00 P.M. and midnight in five. No significant cosinor rhythm was noted for controls (p > 0.5). CONCLUSION: Significant variations in prothrombin time and INR occurred in patients receiving warfarin therapy, with the highest values occurring in the morning and the lowest in the evening. These results may have clinical implications for patients receiving either high- or low-intensity warfarin therapy.  相似文献

When Illinois No. 6 whole coal or vitrain is extracted with pyridine-14C, the extracts and solid residues retain 12–20% and 9–16%, respectively (at temperatures of 23 and 130 °C) of the pyridine-14C. Repeated treatment of the extracts with benzene, followed by filtration and drying at 0.1 Pa for 48 h removes only 20–25% of the labelled amine, although 92–98% of the latter is exchangeable with unlabelled pyridine. The solid residues exhibit similar behaviour. Tetrahydroquinoline-14C (THQ-14C) was used to extract Illinois No. 6 vitrain at 270 °C; the soluble and insoluble fractions after exhaustive drying retained 18% and 15%, respectively, of the THQ-14C which could not be exchanged (from the soluble fraction) with a mixture of unlabelled THQ and quinoline. Ethylenediamine-14C (EDA-14C) was also used to extract Illinois No. 6 vitrain. The retention of EDA-14C was temperature-dependent (10% retained in 20 h at 120 °C, followed by 1 h at 150 °C). Following three exchanges with unlabelled EDA, all but 2.6% of the EDA-14C was removed.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to determine if the adaptive increase in adipose tissue epinephrine-stimulated lipolysis (ESL) observed in exercise trained rats is related to decreased adipocyte size or a direct response to exercise. Two levels of treadmill exercise and three levels of food restriction were imposed on male rats over a 12 week experimental period to create a distribution of adipose tissue cell sizes. Epinephrine-stimulated lipolysis was subsequently measured in the isolated adipocytes from rats trained at two different exercise levels and in untrained rats fed either ad libitum or 16%, 27%, or 35% dietary restriction. Energy restriction was effective in reducing body weight and to some extent epididymal fat pad weight; however, adipocyte size and number were not significantly affected. Exercise in both groups of trained rats was effective in reducing adipocyte size; however, cell size did not differ between training groups. The group receiving the greatest amount of daily exercise had significantly greater ESL indicating that the adaptive increase in lipolytic potential seen in adipose tissue of exercise trained rats is a true metabolic adaptation not secondary to reduced cell size.  相似文献

Human prothrombin, factor IX, and factor X have been idolated in high yield and characterized as the their amino-terminal sequence, molecular weight, amino acid composition, and migration in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. An additional human plasma protein, called protein S, has also been purified and its properties have been compared with those of prothrombin, factor IX, and factor X. Prothrombin (mol wt 72 000), factor IX (mol wt 57 000), and protein S (mol wt 69 000) are single-chain glycoproteins, while factor X (mol wt 59 000) is a glycoprotein composed of two polypeptide chains held together by a disulfide bond(s). The amino-terminal sequence of the light chain of human factor X is homologous with prothrombin, factor IX, and protein S. The heavy chain of human factor X is slightly larger than the heavy chain of bovine factor X and differs from bovine factor X in its amino-terminal sequence.  相似文献
