Fuzzy support for serodiagnosis: the ONSET program

ONSET derives its diagnosis from the combined evidence of contemporaneous and successive findings, which is in accordance with the behaviour of a clinician. Although it does not increase the diagnostic capabilities in principle, i.e., it cannot perform better than an expert reasoning on the basis of the same knowledge, computational power can be exploited to perform the matches and combine the results with greater precision, resolution, reliability, and transparency. Fundamental improvements of diagnosis, however, can only be expected from better serological tests or increased testing frequency. ONSET relies on domain knowledge explicated in a non-verbalized, analytical form. Knowledge representation-although mathematical-is intuitively clear and easy to conceive, making it equally accessible to both man and machine, and hence subject to objective evaluation and criticism     

Landmark-based spatial memory in birds (Parus atricapillus and Columba livia): The use of edges and distances to represent spatial positions.

Birds' use of landmarks to identify spatial locations was examined. Black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) and pigeons (Columba livia) searched for hidden food on a 120-cm–2 tray. In each task the target was near an edge with a nearby landmark. On occasional unrewarded tests the landmark was either left in its usual position, shifted parallel to the edge, shifted perpendicular to the edge, or shifted diagonally. On diagonal landmark shifts the birds shifted their searching more in the parallel direction than in the perpendicular, which violates the predictions of the vector sum model (K. Cheng, 1989). In some cases the birds maintained their searching at a constant perpendicular distance under all landmark shifts. This suggests that perpendicular distance to an edge forms an element in determining where to search on the basis of landmarks. Chickadees and pigeons performed similarly, which suggests similarity in the way they encode locations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

POEMS: program for outliers elimination in multidimensional space

A Program for Outliers Elimination in Multidimensional Space (POEMS), which allows the user to eliminate outliers from training spaces as a prior step to any statistical study, is presented. Even though the program can be applied to any scientific field, the characteristics of POEMS makes it particularly suitable for 'series design' on Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships studies.     

Solid Solutions in the System LaMgAl11O19- LaMgGa11O19-LaMgFe11O19

Solid Solutions with the magnetoplumbite structure in the System LaMgAl₁₁O₁₉-LaMgGa₁₁O₁₉-LaMgFe₁₁O₁₉ were studied by X-ray diffractometry of sintered samples. Complete miscibility exists in the subsystem LaMgAl₁₁O₁₉-LaMgGa₁₁O₁₉ and in a narrow adjacent ternary area with low iron content. In the other subsystems and in the major part of the ternary field, a magnetoplumbite phase occurs together with other compounds.     

Treatment of municipal wastewater UASB reactor effluent by unconventional flotation and UV disinfection.

Post-treatment of an UASB reactor effluent, fed with domestic sewage, was conducted using two-stage flotation and UV disinfection. Results were compared to those obtained in a parallel stabilisation pond. The first flotation stage employed 5 - 7.5 mg L(-1) cationic flocculant to separate off more than 99% of the suspended solids. Then, phosphate ions were completely recovered using carrier flotation with 5-25 mg L(-1) of Fe (FeCl3) at pH 6.3-7.0. This staged flotation led to high recoveries of water and allowed us to separate organic matter and phosphate bearing sludge. The water still contained about 1 x 10(2) NMP/100 mL total coliforms, which were removed using UV radiation to below detection levels. Final water turbidity was < 1.0 NTU, COD < 20 mg L(-1) O2 and 71 mNm(-1), the liquid/air interfacial tension. This flotation-UV flowsheet was found to be more efficient than the treatment in the stabilisation pond and appears to have some potential for water reuse. Results were discussed in terms of the biological, chemical and physicochemical mechanisms involved.     

L-Expressnet: The Communication Subnetwork for the C-NET Project

L-Expressnet is the communication suxbnetwork for the CNET local area network project of the CNR, Italy. Based on a single bus topology, it utilizes a simple and efficient virtual-token access protocol which provides ordered and collision-free transmission. The paper discusses the needs which led to L-Expressnet, describes the protocol, proves its correct operation, and compares its throughput-delay performance with those of other typical bus Protocols. A major advantage of L-Expressnet is that its implementation may be based on Ethernet standard transceivers and network interfaces.     

A family of highly symmetric codes

We define a class of codes admitting a large automorphism group. This family contains the binary extended Hamming code, the hexacode, the Golay codes, the Pless symmetry codes, as well as the [16,4,12]/sub 8/-codes constructed by Marcugini et al. A computer search resulted in the construction of codes with new parameters [28,7,18]/sub 8/,[32,8,20]/sub 8/, and [39,13,17]/sub 4/ belonging to this family.
