Anaerobic digestion enables waste (water) treatment and energy production in the form of biogas. The successful implementation of this process has lead to an increasing interest worldwide. However, anaerobic digestion is a complex biological process, where hundreds of microbial populations are involved, and whose start-up and operation are delicate issues. In order to better understand the process dynamics and to optimize the operating conditions, the availability of dynamic models is of paramount importance. Such models have to be inferred from prior knowledge and experimental data collected from real plants. Modeling and parameter identification are vast subjects, offering a realm of approaches and methods, which can be difficult to fully understand by scientists and engineers dedicated to the plant operation and improvements. This review article discusses existing modeling frameworks and methodologies for parameter estimation and model validation in the field of anaerobic digestion processes. The point of view is pragmatic, intentionally focusing on simple but efficient methods.  相似文献

The entrenched position now taken by participatory planning in urban planning practice has made the call for community participation in the planning process now higher than ever. Community participation has been well-acknowledged to give local people a voice in planning decisions. This paper assessed the level of participation by local people in the management of urban green spaces. Using a case study research approach, Kumasi city, once the garden city of Africa was selected as the study area. The Kumasi city authorities, and residents including opinion leaders, and officials of allied bodies on green spaces constituted the study’s target population. A blend of qualitative research techniques such as in-depth interviews, focus group discussion, and personal observation was employed whilst theoretical sampling technique was adopted. It was found out that the participation of the local people in the management of green space was low. The local people were neither consulted nor informed on green space projects (parks and gardens) by the city authorities. They were also not empowered to self-facilitate initiatives on green spaces and passively involved in final decisions on green spaces. To correct the situation, it is recommended that features of the communicative planning theory such as dialogue, consensus building, and facilitative leadership should be given attention in the urban planning system of Kumasi especially on green space projects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The electrophoretic mobilities of asphaltenes in n-heptane and ethanol were determined. The asphaltenes studied show a positive charge in both solvents. However, the magnitude of the charge is considerably lower in n-heptane than in ethanol. It is concluded that although the electrostatic forces are presented in both solvents, the van der Waals’ atractive forces are the main responsable for the flocculation of asphaltene particles. The addition of a well known asphaltene stabilizer, dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid (DBSA), decreases the electrophoretic mobility of asphaltene particles in ethanol until a constant positive value is reached. This means that the neutralization of the positive charges of the asphaltene particles is not complete, probably due to the limited adsorption of the DBSA on asphaltene surface and also, to the presence of charges inside the asphaltene particles that are not accessible to the DBSA.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of delayed photo-initiation on the polymerization contraction stress (PCS) and degree of conversion (DC) of a dual-cure resin-luting agent. Thirty-five disk (6 mm × 1 mm) samples (n = 10 each group) of dual cure resin luting agent for PCS assessment were fabricated and polymerized using two illuminated quartz rods. Based on the delay in photo-initiation, 30 disks were divided among six groups [group A-0 min (min) delay, group B-2 min, group C-4 min, group D-6 min, group E-8 min and group F-10 min]. A non-photoinitiated group (group G – chemical cure – n = 5) was included as control. The PCS for all specimens was assessed using a Tensometer. For DC evaluation thirty-five specimens were divided into seven groups with delays in photo-initiation (group H-0 min, group I-2 min, group J-4 min, group K-6 min, group L-8 min and group M-10 min, group N-chemical cure). DC was assessed using attenuated total reflectance spectroscopic technique. Statistical comparison among groups was performed using analysis of variance (α = 0.05). The maximum and minimum PCS and DC values with delayed photo-initiation was observed in group-C (3.34 MPa) & group-F (2.44 MPa); and group-M (0.78 MPa) and group-H (0.55 MPa) respectively. Chemically cured samples showed the least PCS (group-G, 1.94) and DC (group-N, 0.53) values in their respective categories. PCS significantly decreased with delayed photo-initiation. A significant increase in DC was noticed when photo-initiation was delayed in the dual cure resin luting agent.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of low fat diets in children aged 2 to 5. Eighty two children (40 females and 42 males) attending a school cafeteria (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina), in a cross sectional study, were evaluated. Body weight (W), height (H) and body composition (BC) by bioimpedance were recorded. The anthropometric raw data were processed as Z-score of the weight-for-age (WEZ) and of the height-for-age (HAZ). Serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and Zinc/haemoglobin ratio (Zn/Hb) were also measured. Results showed that 73.2% of the children were adequate (A) according WEZ, 13.4% were lean (L) and 13.4% overweight (O). 8.5% presented simultaneously impairment in WEZ and HAZ. Body fat percentage and energy metabolism were higher in O than in L and A (p < 0.05). Serum IGF-1's children--aged 4 to 5 years--with HAZ deficit were low than adequate HAZ ones. No statistical differences in Zn/Hb ratio between A, L and O were found. This cross sectional study suggests metabolic disorders in young children attending school cafeterias. These conclusions will allow to design balanced diets in order to optimize the resources, promote optimal growth and development and prevent adult diseases through dietary practices in childhood.  相似文献

A tapered, metal-coated, optical fiber probe will elongate when heated by light input through a fiber. The induced motion can be used for data storage or nanostructuring of a surface. The elongation produced by this alignment-free system is measured with force feedback in a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM). The input light intensity controls the elongation magnitude, which ranges from a few nanometers to more than 100 nm. A 0.5-mW input energy yields approximately 20 nm of probe elongation. The elongation quantified here can create artifacts in any experiment using pulsed laser light with a NSOM or an atomic force microscope.  相似文献

Vector description of higher-order modes in photonic crystal fibers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We extensively study the propagation features of higher-order modes in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Our analysis is based on a full-vector modal technique specially adapted to accurately describe light propagation in PCF's. Unlike conventional fibers, PCF's exhibit a somewhat unusual mechanism for the generation of higher-order modes. Accordingly, PCF's are characterized by the constancy of the number of modes below a wavelength threshold. An explicit verification of this property is given through a complete analysis of the dispersion relations of higher-order modes in terms of the structural parameters of this kind of fiber. The transverse irradiance distributions for some of these higher-order modes are also presented, showing an excellent agreement with recent experimental measurements. In the same way, the full-vector nature of our approach allows us to analyze the rich polarization structure of the PCF mode spectrum.  相似文献

The impact of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) discharges related to an old zinc ore treatment facility in the Lot River (France) was investigated in four fish species (the chub: Leusciscus cephalus, the roach: Rutilus rutilus, the perch: Perca fluviatilis and the bream: Abramis brama). The organisms were sampled in four stations along the polymetallic contamination gradient. Cd and Zn analysis were carried out in five organs (gills, posterior intestine, liver, kidneys and skeletal muscle) in order to highlight the potential pathways of uptake, storage and elimination of metals. The results indicate a very strong Cd contamination in fish collected downstream from the metal source. The kidneys have the highest cadmium concentrations, but the gills and the intestine, as exchange organs, present the largest variations between the stations in close relation with the contamination gradient. Cd concentrations measured in the liver vary only slightly among the sampling stations. Unlike the trends observed for Cd, Zn levels in fish populations are strongly regulated and do not follow ambient Zn concentrations. The concentrations measured vary also according to fish species, for both Cd and Zn. This study shows that the trophic habits can explain the interspecific differences in Cd bioaccumulation. Zn levels observed for each species in non-contaminated populations also help to understand metal bioaccumulation patterns in polluted sites, suggesting that the determinism of interspecific differences is constitutive.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of composite materials based on calcium–aluminum layered double hydroxides (Ca–Al-LDHs), intercalated with organic polycarboxylate (PC) polymers, is described. The PC polymers, which exhibit a “comb-like” architecture, contain ethylene oxide side chains of different lengths. They are intercalated between the cationic Ca–Al–OH-layers when tricalcium aluminate is rehydrated in the presence of PC polymers. The intercalation compounds are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and TEM. The basal spacings of the PC-LDH composite materials, determined by XRD, are dependent on the number of the ethylene oxide units (EOUs) in the side chain. Accordingly, first TEM micrographs reveal approximately similar layer distances. Elemental analysis as well as IR-spectroscopy proves the existence of the intercalated organic material.  相似文献
