Remote results of surgical treatment of chronic suppurative lung diseases

The work was undertaken to study late results of surgical treatment of suppurative lung diseases during 1950-1974. Questionaries were sent to 420 operated patients. Answers were received from 328 (78%) patients, 86% of them were examined clinically, 14%--were estimated according to questionaries and their physician findings. 50 per cent of patients were followed up for 10-24 years. A positive effect was gained in 94.8%. 82 per cent of the operated patients have practically recovered well. The causes of poor issues are described, and trends for their improvement are delineated.     

Early diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis

This study demonstrates that the diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis can sometimes be made before the full-blown clinical and radiographic findings are manifest. Of 12 infants with films available prior to diagnosis of the disease, nine had early selective dilatation of small bowel and little or no air in the colon. Necrotizing enterocolitis should be foremost in the differential diagnosis when this finding is coupled with signs such as abdominal distention, acidosis, and diarrhea.     

Femoral neuropathy complicating anticoagulant therapy

Recoveries of Streptococcus mutans from human dental plaque were lower when plated on mitis-salivarius agar obtained from Baltimore Biological Laboratories as compared with mitis-salivarius agar obtained from Difco Laboratories. However, no difference in recoveries of established laboratory strains of S. mutans was observed between these two agar preparations.     

Long term control of diabetes in general practice

Longterm follow-up and counselling of the diabetic patient faces the family doctor with highly specific tasks. The importance of optimum cooperation from the patient is stressed and the method of carrying out periodic checkups is described. The doctor should obtain information about the carbohydrate metabolism from urinary tests performed by the patient himself. Also, the symptoms of late diabetic syndrome should be detected as early as possible.

Observation of glucose and plasmatic insulin curve after oral administration of glucose in 16 brothers of juvenile diabetics. The findings were: slight curve alterations that would be compatible with chemical diabetes.     

Marijuana and hyperthermia

The present paper reports the variability of PTC taste sensitivity among eight endogamous tribal populations inhabiting the Eastern Ghats of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. It was compared with the genetic diversity of PTC taste sensitivity among tribal and caste populations of Andhra Pradesh. The tribal and caste groups present a relatively high genetic diversity, of which a major proportion is due to genetic differences within populations rather than that between populations. Castes show a higher heterogeneity than tribes, the difference being significant. The high genetic diversity found among Andhra populations may be attributed to social stratification and the practice of strict endogamy.
