The effectiveness of CO2 laser therapy in the reduction and elimination of dentinal hypersensitivity in vivo and its thermal effects on tooth surfaces in vitro were investigated. Twenty-three patients with 91 sensitive teeth participated in this study and were followed for 3 months. The parameters used with CO2 laser were 1 W in a continuous wave mode and irradiation time ranging from 5 to 10 s. Hypersensitivity was assessed by thermal stimulus (a blast of air from a dental syringe). Thermal effects were measured by thermography using 10 extracted human teeth. After laser treatment, all patients were immediately free from sensitive pain. Over 3 months, the CO2 laser treatment reduced dentinal hypersensitivity to air stimulus by 50%. All teeth remained vital with no adverse effects. Thermography revealed no temperature increase on irradiated tooth surfaces subjected to water coolant. These results show that the CO2 laser is useful in the treatment of cervical dentinal hypersensitivity without thermal damage to pulp. 相似文献

Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) exposure has been reported to induce pulmonary fibrosis in rats. Accumulating evidence has shown that cytokines play a pivotal role in the excessive production of connective tissue components in pulmonary fibrosis. In this report, rat lung slice cultures were used to study the synergistic involvement of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) in CdCl2-induced alveolar fibrosis. Rat lung slices were maintained at the interphase of air and medium on a polyester mesh stretched on a plastic scaffold. Treatment of lung slices with 2.5, 5 or 10 microM CdCl2 for 7 days resulted in 85, 40 and 6% respectively for relative survival. Under these culture conditions, CdCl2 alone did not induce alveolar fibrosis in rat lung slices. However, in the presence of 0.5 ng/ml TGF-beta1, CdCl2 at a dose ranging from 1 to 5 microM increased the thickness of alveolar septa. Furthermore, the thickness of alveolar septa in lung slices treated with CdCl2 was dose-dependently increased by the presence of TGF-beta1. The thickened alveolar septa were apparently due to the deposition of excessive extracellular matrix, as revealed by trichrome stain and ultrastructural examination. Our results also show that fibrogenic activity induced by the combined treatment with CdCl2 and TGF-beta1 can be reduced by co-treatment with 200 microg/ml lambda-carrageenan, a TGF-beta1 inhibitor. Therefore, the present results indicate that TGF-beta1 can synergistically stimulate the fibrogenic activity in lung tissue subsequent to CdCl2 injury. 相似文献

The in vitro antifungal activity of D0870 against eight isolates of fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans was compared with that of itraconazole, ketoconazole and miconazole. The colorimetric MTT [3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H tetrazolium bromide] assay was used to assess the antifungal activities. The 50% minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50) of D0870 was below 0.031 microgram ml-1 for seven isolates and 0.25 microgram ml-1 for one isolate. The activity of D0870 was superior to that of the other azoles. Ketoconazole was the most effective azole next to D0870. Therefore, the new bis-triazole, D0870, is expected to be promising for the therapy of fluconazole-resistant candidosis. The present data also confirmed that the MTT assay may be useful for evaluation of resistance and detection of resistant C. albicans. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of rhythmic external compression (REC) of the limbs on the healing of ischemic cutaneous ulcers in systemic sclerosis (SSc). METHODS: A prospective study analyzing 17 patients with SSc with symptomatic ischemic cutaneous ulcers in the limbs of more than 4 weeks' duration, who submitted to 20 sessions of REC, each session of one hour duration, 3 times a week. Patients were assessed at study entry, at the end of REC sessions, and at 30, 60, and 90 days after treatment. We also conducted a retrospective analysis of the outcome of ischemic vascular ulcers in a group of 20 patients with SSc who did not undergo REC. RESULTS: Twenty-eight ischemic vascular ulcers were submitted to REC. There was complete healing of 20 ulcers (71%) at the end of REC sessions. The healing was statistically more frequent in the distal ulcers (fingers and toes) (p = 0.0289), independent of SSc variant. There was a statistically significant correlation between pain resolution until the 15th session of REC and future ulcer healing (p < 0.0001). At followup, there were relapses in 2 ulcers 30 days after treatment. In the 20 patients with SSc who did not undergo REC, at followup, after 90 days of conventional treatment, there was healing of 7 ulcers (35%). CONCLUSION: REC could represent a therapeutic option in the treatment of ischemic cutaneous ulcers in SSc. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Several small studies have indicated an association between deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism and a subsequent diagnosis of cancer, but the subject is controversial. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide study of a cohort of patients with deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism that was drawn from the Danish National Registry of Patients for the years 1977 through 1992. The occurrence of cancer in the cohort was determined by linkage to the Danish Cancer Registry. The expected number of cancer cases was estimated on the basis of national age-, sex-, and site-specific incidence rates. RESULTS: A total of 15,348 patients with deep venous thrombosis and 11,305 patients with pulmonary embolism were identified. We observed 1737 cases of cancer in the cohort with deep venous thrombosis, as compared with 1372 expected cases (standardized incidence ratio, 1.3; 95 percent confidence interval, 1.21 to 1.33). Among the patients with pulmonary embolism, the standardized incidence ratio was 1.3, with a 95 percent confidence interval of 1.22 to 1.41. The risk was substantially elevated only during the first six months of follow-up and declined rapidly thereafter to a constant level slightly above 1.0 one year after the thrombotic event. Forty percent of the patients given a diagnosis of cancer within one year after hospitalization for thromboembolism had distant metastases at the time of the diagnosis of cancer. There were strong associations with several cancers, most pronounced for those of the pancreas, ovary, liver (primary hepatic cancer), and brain. CONCLUSIONS: An aggressive search for a hidden cancer in a patient with a primary deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism is not warranted. 相似文献

Type I collagen fibers account for 90% of the organic matrix of bone. The degradation of this collagen is a major event during bone resorption, but its mechanism is unknown. A series of data obtained in biological models strongly suggests that the recently discovered cysteine proteinase cathepsin K plays a key role in bone resorption. Little is known, however, about the actual action of cathepsin K on type I collagen. Here, we show that the activity of cathepsin K alone is sufficient to dissolve completely insoluble collagen of adult human cortical bone. We found that the collagenolytic activity of cathepsin K is directed both outside the helical region of the molecule, i.e. the typical activity of cysteine proteinases, and at various sites inside the helical region, hitherto believed to resist all mammalian proteinases but the collagenases of the matrix metalloproteinase family and the neutrophil elastase. This property of cathepsin K is unique among mammalian proteinases and is reminiscent of bacterial collagenases. It is likely to be responsible for the key role of cathepsin K in bone resorption. 相似文献
