Evaluation of rib steak colour from Friesian, Hereford and Charolais heifers pastured or overwintered prior to slaughter

Heifers (n=10) were randomly selected from the slaughter line of a local factory each month for a period of 21 months. Rib steak (sampled at the 10th rib) from the left side of each carcass was taken for analysis. The cattle breeds selected during this study were Friesian, Hereford and Charolais. The mean weight of the left side for all carcasses was 146.6 (S.E.M.= 1.0kg). Graded carcasses selected for sampling during this trial were classified using the EUROP scale and the specific heifer grades chosen were factory grades EO4L and EO4H. Initial Hunter 'a' values (on the day of arrival in the laboratory) of rib steak from heifers finished between November and March (overwintered) were significantly (P<0.001) higher than Hunter 'a' values from heifers finished between April and October (pastured). After storage at 4?°C under simulated retail display conditions for 6 days, the Hunter 'a' values for overwintered samples were also significantly (P<0.001) greater than those for pastured samples. Breed also had an effect on the colour of the meat. After storage for 6 days, Hunter 'a' values of rib steak from Charolais were significantly (P<0.05) higher than either Friesian or Hereford. Pastured heifers had significantly (P<0.05) higher levels of the monounsaturated fatty acid C16.1 in the total lipid fraction of rib steak (neutral and polar) than samples taken from overwintered heifers. Pastured heifers had significantly (P<0.01) higher levels of the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) C18.3 in the phospholipid fraction than those from overwintered cattle. However, Hereford had significantly (P<0.05) higher levels of C14.0, C16.1 and C18.0 in the phospholipid fraction than those found in Friesian and Charolais. The level of α-tocopherol in the muscle was not affected by either pasturing/overwintering or breed. However, Continental breeds had significantly (P<0.05) higher levels of α-tocopherol in adipose tissue than Friesian.     

Testing Self-Similar Networks

A hard problem in network testing is verifying the correctness of a class of networks, as well as the actual networks under test. In practice, at most a few networks (sometimes only one) are actually tested. Thus an important question is how to select one or more networks that are sufficiently representative to apply the results to a class of networks. We present a model-based technique for selecting a representative network. The central theorem establishes that the representative network displays any faults present in any network of the class. This paper introduces the concept of “self-similarity,” which is used to select the network, and presents the results of an experiment in testing one class of networks.     

Perceptions of News Credibility about the War in Iraq: Why War Opponents Perceived the Internet as the Most Credible Medium

This study investigated cross‐media credibility perception with respect to news coverage about the Iraq War. In an environment of political partisanship, perceptions of media credibility were likely affected by the audience’s political position on the war. Based on hostile media effect theory, a set of hypotheses was proposed to investigate whether the minority opinion group, war opponents, evaluated the Internet as a more credible medium than did neutrals or supporters. An online survey was conducted to which 481 people responded (71% war supporters, 19% opponents, 10% neutrals). Results showed that opponents of the war perceived the Internet as less aligned with a pro‐government position and as more credible than did neutrals or supporters. The opponent group also showed a strong negative correlation between perceived pro‐government alignment and perceptions of Internet credibility. For the minority partisan group, the diversity of information and views on the war was the main reason for the perception of high credibility of the Internet as a news channel.     

POTLIB 2001: A potential energy surface library for chemical systems

POTLIB 2001 is a computer program library of global chemical potential energy surface (PES) functions (91 functions in version 1.0) along with test data, a suite of utility programs, and a convenient user interface. The PES programs are written in ANSI standard FORTRAN77 and can be used to determine the Born-Oppenheimer potential energy of chemical systems as a function of the internal coordinates. The accompanying test data allow users to verify local implementations of this library. Finally, the utility programs permit use of this library in conjunction with a variety of chemical dynamics and chemical kinetics computer codes. Interface routines are provided for the POLYRATE and ABCRATE program packages of Truhlar and co-workers, the VENUS96 program package of Hase and co-workers, and the VARIFLEX program package of Klippenstein and co-workers; the routines in this library can also be used in conjunction with the DYNASOL program package of Zhang and co-workers. This article describes the library and the utility programs and outlines the systematic conventions used for interfaces in the computer programs contained in the library. Adherence to these conventions will allow future PESs to be compatible with this library.     

PET in breast cancer

In mid-summer 1997, just as the United States National Cancer Institute was acknowledging that the nuclear bomb tests at the Nevada Test Site may ultimately cause up to 75,000 cases of thyroid cancer in people who were living in the USA in the 1950s and 1960s, the Australian authorities were mooting the possibility that the Maralinga test sites in South Australia should become a tourist attraction. Some Aboriginal tribal leaders welcomed this proposed use when the 20 million Pounds 'clean-up' being paid for by the United Kingdom government as some compensation for using the area for its weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s is completed. This paper surveys the attempts to clean up the site of UK nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s, not least by attempting to vitrify vast tracts of desert.     

Neurologic consultation practice in a general hospital of a rural area

The purpose of this ongoing study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of new minimally invasive pervaginam cystourethropexy and sling procedures for the treatment of female genuine stress urinary incontinence. A total of 75 women (mean age, 52.8 years) underwent either a cystourethropexy or a sling procedure. A miniature bone anchor and a staple-like bone anchor driver were used for the fixation of periurethral tissue or a xenogenic sling to the pubic bone. With a mean follow-up of eight months, 61 patients (82%) were completely cured of stress incontinence, 10 (14%) reported a more than 50% decrease in pad usage, and 4 patients showed failure early following surgery. The exclusively pervaginam cystourethropexy and sling procedures are minimally invasive, safe, and effective. Further experience and longer follow-up are necessary to establish their role in the treatment of women with stress urinary incontinence.     

Lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging: comparison between fast spin echo proton density and spin echo T1 axial scans

Spin echo (SE) T1 axial scans are routinely obtained in magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine in many centres. This study directly compared matched SE T1 and fast SE (FSE) proton density (PD) axial scans. Both SE T1 and FSE PD axial scans of the lumbar spine were obtained in 116 consecutive patients. The imaging parameters (field-of-view, slice thickness, interslice gap, number of excitations and matrix size) and scan levels were identical for each pair of sequences. At two selected levels, L4/5 and L5/S1, various structures were independently graded by two observers. In 232 lumbar levels analysed, the bone marrow, epidural fat, disc, extradural nerve root and facet joint were equally well seen on both sequences by both observers (combined mean grades of 2.93-2.99). The thecal sac was marginally better depicted on FSE PD than on SE T1 images, with mean grades of 2.96 and 2.88, respectively. The psoas muscle was adequately visualized for diagnostic purposes on both sequences (mean grades of 2.30-2.32). The cauda equina were better seen on FSE PD (mean grade 1.92) than on SE T1 (mean grade 1.00) images. In conclusion, FSE PD scans are comparable to and may potentially replace SE T1 axial MR scans of the lumbar spine.     

Defective transfer RNA-queuine modification in C3H10T1/2 murine fibroblasts transfected with oncogenic ras

tRNA isoacceptors for aspartic acid, asparagine, histidine, and tyrosine are modified in the anticodon wobble position with the deazaguanine analogue queuine. Queuine modification is defective in many tumors and transformed cell lines, and the extent of hypomodification correlates with staging and outcome in numerous human tumors. The molecular role of queuine modification in normal cells and the mechanisms of queuine hypomodification in tumors are unknown. We have characterized nontransformed C3H10T1/2 murine fibroblasts (C3H) and their ras-transfected counterparts (RasC4) with respect to the causes and effects of queuine hypomodification. RasC4 cells are hypomodified for queuine compared with C3H cells, despite increase tRNA-guanine ribosyltansferase activity. Excess exogenous queuine can cause repletion of tRNA queuine levels in RasC4 cells. Queuine modification of both C3H and RasC4 cells can be decreased by treatment with 7-methylguanine. This treatment does not affect growth in monolayer culture but enhances anchorage-independent growth of RasC4 cells greatly. These cell lines may be useful systems for the study of queuine function in normal cells and the causes and consequences of hypomodification for queuine in tumors.
