A Raman microprobe study of electrical treeing in polyethylene   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The chemical nature of electrical tree growth in a blend of high and low density polyethylene has been studied by confocal Raman microprobe spectroscopy. The observed spectra, which are easily perturbed by the Raman probe beam, can be described in terms of three components, the relative intensities of which vary from place-to-place on the sample. Throughout the body of the tree, the usual Raman bands of polyethylene are seen, but superimposed upon a pronounced fluorescent background. This suggests a degree of material degradation throughout the structure, even where there is no visible evidence of electrical discharge damage or ageing. The individual channels that make up the fractal structure of the tree can then be divided into two distinct categories. Within the core of the tree, their Raman spectra are made up of two elements; fluorescence, plus the G and D bands of sp2 hybridized carbon. Here, the tree channels are best thought of as hollow tubules surrounded by a carbonaceous shell. At the tips, the channels are characterized simply by the Raman bands of polyethylene superimposed upon a reduced fluorescent background, irrespective of their size. That is, in this region, the tree channels are simply hollow tubules within the dielectric. The transition between these two structures occurs relatively abruptly. The evolution of heterogeneous deformation in a tantalum polycrystal was examined during a three-point bending experiment using electron backscatter pattern mapping. Slip bands formed at strains as low as 1%, and they became more intense with strain. Heterogeneous deformation was evident as intragranular orientation gradients as large as 30° were observed after a strain of about 8%. Nonmonotonic changes in the local average misorientation distribution were observed, implying that dislocation substructure developed in a complex manner. Slip bands were analyzed using plane traces computed from local orientation information. With the assumption of uniaxial stress, Schmid factors for favorable slip systems were identified for each grain and compared with observations, showing evidence for macroscopic activity on both {110} and {112} slip systems. Reconstructed boundary data were used to estimate the geometric potential for slip transfer at grain boundaries. The correlations indicated that when active slip systems were favorably oriented for slip transfer across the boundary, it was often observed in the form of continuous slip bands aligned across the boundary. In boundaries where geometrical alignment and Schmid factors were not favorable for slip transfer, there was a higher likelihood to form ledges (topographic discontinuities) along the grain boundaries. Dislocation pileups at grain boundaries were also correlated with a low potential for slip transfer.  相似文献

Temperature, CH, NCN, and NO profiles were measured for eight low-pressure hydrocarbon flames fueled by methane, ethane, propane, and butane using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) diagnostics. These measurements were used (1) to assess NCN and prompt-NO formation chemistry across a series of fuels of increasing number of carbons at different equivalence ratios (? = 1.07 and 1.28); (2) to examine the predictive capabilities of current C1–C4 hydrocarbon and NCN formation/consumption combustion mechanisms on properly capturing prompt-NO formation and (3) to examine the postulation that additional prompt-NO precursors (other than CH) exist for fuels larger than methane. For a given equivalence ratio, the measured peak CH concentration is fairly constant across all four fuels, while both the peak NCN and post-flame NO concentrations steadily increase. Furthermore, it is found that as the fuels increase in number of carbons, i.e., methane to butane, the correlation between the peak NCN and post-flame NO remains high, while the correlation between peak CH and peak NCN and peak CH and post-flame NO becomes increasingly lower. This is especially evident for rich flame cases. The experimental profiles are compared to numerical calculations using two comprehensive kinetic mechanisms suitable for C4 chemistry, where the CH + N2  NCN + H reaction is assumed as the only prompt-NO initiation reaction. For the ? = 1.28 flame cases, CH is over-predicted using both mechanisms for all four fuels and by as much as 60%, while for the ? = 1.07 cases, CH is predicted to within 15% of the experimentally-derived results, although there is some discrepancy concerning the spatial locations of the CH profiles. For both NCN and NO, there is an increasing under-prediction for the ? = 1.28 cases as the fuel increases in number of carbons, while for the ? = 1.07 cases there is a systematic under-prediction of NCN and NO with a weaker (although evident) fuel dependence. From the experimental results and the comparison to modeling predictions, it is apparent that additional work concerning CH formation and consumption kinetics is necessary to accurately capture the CH concentration profiles across a broad range of conditions. Furthermore the comparisons to the modeling predictions using only a single prompt-NO precursor, CH, indicate a reasonable plausibility that (an) additional prompt-NO precursor (s) exist and become important when considering fuels larger than methane, especially under rich flame conditions. A dissimilar metal weldment consisting of SA508-309L-308L-304L is widely used in light-water nuclear reactors. These weldments demonstrate dissimilar susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking that are related to the microstructure, properties, and residual stress. In this work, microstructures, hardness, and the residual stress distribution of the dissimilar metal weldments were investigated, with the correlation of increased hardness in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) to the microstructure. 304L HAZ demonstrated similar grain morphology as the base material, and the increase in hardness was primarily attributed to the increased dislocation density. SA508 HAZ demonstrated a change of grain morphology resulting from the different peak temperatures and cooling rates. The increased hardness in the SA508 HAZ was attributed to the refined grain morphology, higher dislocation density, and higher number density of precipitates. A ~ 20–30-μm-wide martensitic zone formed at the fusion boundary of SA508-309L, where Cr-rich carbide precipitates were observed, with the average size and the number density of 44.1 ± 16.9 nm and 1.5 × 1021 m−3, respectively. Residual stress results demonstrated the largest tensile stress at 309L butter, indicating its high cracking susceptibility.

The development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) following an episode of acute kidney injury (AKI) is an increasingly recognized clinical problem. Inhibition of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) protects renal function in animal models of AKI and has become a viable therapeutic strategy in AKI. However, the impact of TLR4 inhibition on the chronic sequelae of AKI is unknown. Consequently, we examined the chronic effects of TLR4 inhibition in a model of ischemic AKI. Mice with a TLR4-deletion on a C57BL/6 background and wild-type (WT) background control mice (C57BL/6) were subjected to bilateral renal artery clamping for 19 min and reperfusion for up to 6 weeks. Despite the acute protective effect of TLR4 inhibition on renal function (serum creatinine 1.6 ± 0.4 mg/dL TLR4-deletion vs. 2.8 ± 0.3 mg/dL·WT) and rates of tubular apoptosis following ischemic AKI, we found no difference in neutrophil or macrophage infiltration. Furthermore, we observed significant protection from microvascular rarefaction at six weeks following injury with TLR4-deletion, but this did not alter development of fibrosis. In conclusion, we validate the acute protective effect of TLR4 signal inhibition in AKI but demonstrate that this protective effect does not mitigate the sequential fibrogenic response in this model of ischemic AKI.  相似文献

The dry deposition of ammonia from the atmosphere to the surface can lead to eutrophication of sensitive ecosystems and acidification of the soil. A large proportion of the ammonia emitted from agricultural sources can be deposited within a few kilometres and, therefore, impacts of ammonia dry deposition often occur near to the source. To assess these impacts, short-range atmospheric dispersion models are often applied to simulate the emission, dispersion and deposition of ammonia. However, these models can be time-consuming to run and often require detailed input data and, therefore, for multiple assessments it is useful to have a method of screening to discard scenarios where impacts are expected to be negligible. The SCAIL model (Simple Calculation of Ammonia Impact Limits) has been developed for this purpose. SCAIL estimates the atmospheric concentration and dry deposition at the nearest edge of a sensitive ecosystem (receptor) downwind of an ammonia source. These estimates are calculated based on simple meteorological data, the emission rate of the source, land cover type and distance to the receptor. Analysis of the model predictions showed that uncertainty in the model input data leads to an uncertainty in concentration and dry deposition estimates of 25–30% and 40–45% respectively. Detailed atmospheric dispersion models will also have similar uncertainties since they use similar types of input data. Comparison of the concentration predictions with previous measurements made around eight farms showed that the model significantly underestimated concentrations although the model performance was similar to existing screening techniques. The measurement dataset was used to calibrate the SCAIL model which subsequently performed better, using independent verification data, than existing models calibrated in a similar way. The benefits of the SCAIL model are already being seen in the UK, where it is used to screen farms for potential impacts on statutory nature conservation areas.  相似文献

Many lake whitefish stocks in Lake Michigan have experienced substantial declines in growth and condition since the 1990s. Reduced growth and condition could result in reduced quality or quantity of eggs produced by spawning females, which in turn could negatively impact recruitment. We evaluated the potential for reduced recruitment by measuring early life stage density and length, and we discuss the utility of these measures as early indicators of lake whitefish year-class strength. Overall, mean larval density (number per 1000 m3 ± SE) in Lake Michigan was greater in 2006 (373.7 ± 28.3) than in 2005 (16.6 ± 24.8); whereas, mean length (mm ± SE) of larval lake whitefish was smaller in 2006 (12.87 ± 0.07) than in 2005 (14.38 ± 0.13). The ratio of zooplankton to fish density did not show an expected relationship with larval fish density or length. Rather, variation in larval density was best explained by a multiple-regression model that included larval length, spring wind intensity, and adult stock density as predictor variables. Our results suggest that the density of larval lake whitefish is not directly regulated by temperature or zooplankton density at the time of emergence, but that a potential for density-dependent regulation exists when larval emergence rates are high. We conclude that the observed declines in growth and condition of adult lake whitefish are not resulting in substantial reductions in recruitment.  相似文献

An overview is provided of measures that are administered repeatedly in daily life. Variations of this methodology have been referred to as ecological momentary assessment, diary methods, daily process measures, and most broadly as intensive repeated measures in naturalistic settings (IRM-NS). Contrasts are drawn between IRM-NS methods on the basis of different sampling strategies, such as time-contingent recording, signal-contingent recording, and event-contingent recording. Common threats to the internal validity, construct validity, and external validity of IRM-NS measures are reviewed, along with ways to reduce these threats. The statistical analysis of IRM-NS data is considered, with a particular focus on the investigation of intraindividual variability. An extended example is provided of an IRM-NS measure, an event-contingent recording method for the assessment of interpersonal behaviour.
