We show how to extract plain text from PostScript files. A textual scan is inadequate because PostScript interpreters can generate characters on the page that do not appear in the source file. Furthermore, word and line breaks are implicit in the graphical rendition, and must be inferred from the positioning of word fragments. We present a robust technique for extracting text and recognizing words and paragraphs. The method uses a standard PostScript interpreter but redefines several PostScript operators, and simple heuristics are employed to locate word and line breaks. The scheme has been used to create a full-text index, and plain-text versions, of 40,000 technical reports (34 Gbytes of PostScript). Other text-extraction systems are reviewed: none offer the same combination of robustness and simplicity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have unique mechanical, electrical, and optical properties and can be easily chemically modified; features that make them excellent candidate materials for applications as sensors and stimulators in neuronal tissue engineering. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that SWNTs can support neuronal attachment and growth, that simple chemical modifications can be employed to control cell growth, that SWNTs do not interfere with ongoing neuronal function, and that neurons can be electrically coupled to SWNTs. Growth and attachment of the neuroblastoma*glioma NG108, a model neuronal cell, was assessed on unmodified SWNT substrates or substrates from SWNTs modified with 4-benzoic acid or 4-tert-butylphenyl functional groups using a simple functionalization method. SWNT films support cell growth, but at a reduced level compared to tissue culture-treated polystyrene. The order of viability and cell attachment was tissue culture treated polystyrene > SWNTs > 4-tert-butylphenyl-functionalized SWNTs > 4-benzoic acid-functionalized SWNTs. Decreased cell growth after culture on untreated (non adherent) polystyrene suggested that cell attachment was a critical determinant of proliferation and cell growth on SWNTs. Fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy revealed decreased neurite outgrowth in NG108 grown on SWNT substrates. We are also among the first groups to demonstrate electrical coupling of SWNTs and neurons by demonstrating that NG108 and rat primary peripheral neurons showed robust voltage-activated currents when electrically stimulated through transparent, conductive SWNT films. Our data suggest that SWNTs are flexible resource materials for tissue engineering application involving electrically excitable tissues such as muscles and nerves.  相似文献

A practical approach was used to achieve specified food safety objectives (FSOs) by incorporating risk assessment methodology. A series of cross-contamination scenarios at the retail level were evaluated in a spreadsheet and ranked according to their level of risk, and the degree to which they exceeded an FSO for Listeria monocytogenes (100 CFU/g) was determined. Percentiles and analyses of variance were used to identify which scenarios would be most likely not to achieve the FSO. It was also possible to incorporate into the model the effect of additional risk management interventions (e.g., hand washing method) by using "what if" scenarios analysis. The highest risk corresponded to the use of the same gloves to handle contaminated meat and then sliced ham compared with the safer method of using different gloves to handle each product. Nevertheless, in all scenarios bacterial concentrations could be higher than 10(8) CFU/g. A significant lack of knowledge regarding the transfer rates of L. monocytogenes was revealed, which provided the model with an important uncertainty component. The "what if" scenarios analysis based on the scenario representing handling food with bare hands followed by hand washing (scenario 2) revealed that the hand washing procedure had less impact than expected. This study illustrates the use of scenarios to model the most effective food processes and thus provide risk managers with appropriate information on which to base their decisions.  相似文献

The development of a robust method for the synthesis of highly monodisperse microgels cross-linked with degradable covalent bonds offers the potential for fabricating microgels with the highly controllable porosities, cell interactions, and degradation half-lives required for biomedical applications. A microfluidic chip is designed that enables the on-chip mixing and emulsification of two reactive polymer solutions (hydrazide and aldehyde-functionalized carbohydrates) to form monodisperse, hydrazone cross-linked microgels in the size range of ≈40-100 μm. The device can be run continuously for at least 30 h without a significant drift in particle size. The resulting microgels have a homogeneous bulk composition and can swell and deswell as the solvent conditions change in predictable ways based on the chemistry of the reactive polymers used, thereby enabling improved control over both the chemistry and morphology of the resulting microgels relative to other reported approaches. The in situ gelation chemistry used facilitates rapid microgel formation within the droplets without requiring the use of UV light or heating to initiate polymerization, thus making this approach of particular potential utility in cell encapsulation or drug delivery (as demonstrated).  相似文献

Nanoparticles have useful properties, but it is often important that they only start working after they are placed in a desired location. The encapsulation of nanoparticles allows their function to be preserved until they are released at a specific time or location, and this has been exploited in the development of self-healing materials and in applications such as drug delivery. Encapsulation has also been used to stabilize and control the release of substances, including flavours, fragrances and pesticides. We recently proposed a new technique for the repair of surfaces called 'repair-and-go'. In this approach, a flexible microcapsule filled with a solution of nanoparticles rolls across a surface that has been damaged, stopping to repair any defects it encounters by releasing nanoparticles into them, then moving on to the next defect. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the repair-and-go approach using droplets of oil that are stabilized with a polymer surfactant and contain CdSe nanoparticles. We show that these microcapsules can find the cracks on a surface and selectively deliver the nanoparticle contents into the crack, before moving on to find the next crack. Although the microcapsules are too large to enter the cracks, their flexible walls allow them to probe and adhere temporarily to the interior of the cracks. The release of nanoparticles is made possible by the thin microcapsule wall (comparable to the diameter of the nanoparticles) and by the favourable (hydrophobic-hydrophobic) interactions between the nanoparticle and the cracked surface.  相似文献

The identification of peaks is fundamental in the processing of physiological signals. For example, it is common to the analysis of electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, sympathetic neuronal activity, pulse oximetry, respiratory movement, hormone pulse secretion, and even chromatography. Often it is necessary to detect peaks in real time, but the task is frequently complicated by baseline wander and other interference. Current approaches to the problem tend to be complicated, specific to a particular domain, and reliant on several tunable parameters. There is a need for a simple and general mathematical formalization of peaks and troughs that has easily examinable properties and is readily implementable as an efficient algorithm. In this paper we present such a mathematical model together with an algorithm for the detection of peaks and troughs. We illustrate the generality of the method with some actual physiological data.  相似文献

Within the creativity domain, inspiration is a motivational state posited to energize the actualization of creative ideas. The authors examined the construct validity, predictive utility, and function of inspiration in the writing process. Study 1, a cross-lagged panel study, showed that getting creative ideas and being inspired are distinct and that the former precedes the latter. In Study 2, inspiration, at the between-person level, predicted the creativity of scientific writing, whereas effort predicted technical merit. Within persons, peaks in inspiration predicted peaks in creativity and troughs in technical merit. In Study 3, inspiration predicted the creativity of poetry. Consistent with its posited transmission function, inspiration mediated between creativity of the idea and creativity of the product, whereas effort, positive affect, and awe did not. Study 4 extended the Study 3 findings to fiction writing. Openness to aesthetics and positive affect predicted creativity of the idea, whereas approach temperament moderated the relation between creativity of the idea and inspiration. Inspiration predicted efficiency, productivity, and use of shorter words, indicating that inspiration not only transmits creativity but does so economically. The trade-off between exploration and exploitation is common to a wide variety of problems involving search in space and mind. The prevalence of this trade-off and its neurological underpinnings led us to propose domain-general cognitive search processes (Hills, Todd, & Goldstone, 2008). We propose further that these are consistent with the idea of a central executive search process that combines goal-handling across subgoal hierarchies. In the present study, we investigate 3 aspects of this proposal. First, the existence of a unitary central executive search process should allow priming from 1 search task to another and at multiple hierarchical levels. We confirm this by showing cross-domain priming from a spatial search task to 2 different cognitive levels within a lexical search task. Second, given the neural basis of the proposed generalized cognitive search process and the evidence that the central executive is primarily engaged during complex tasks, we hypothesize that priming should require search in the sense of a self-regulated making and testing of sequential predictions about the world. This was confirmed by showing that when participants were allowed to collect spatial resources without searching for them, no priming occurred. Finally, we provide a mechanism for the underlying search process and investigate 3 alternative hypotheses for subgoal hierarchies using the central executive as a search process model (CESP). CESP envisions the central executive as having both emergent and unitary processes, with one of its roles being a generalized cognitive search process that navigates goal hierarchies by mediating persistence on and switching between subgoals.
