Data were collected in 1998-2002 from wheat stored in commercial grain elevators in south-central Kansas. Bins at these elevators had concrete walls and were typically 6-9 m in diameter and 30-35 m tall. A vacuum-probe sampler was used to collect grain samples in the top 12 m of the wheat in each bin. The primary insect species found in the wheat samples were: Cryptolestes ferrugineus, Rhyzopertha dominica, and Tribolium castaneum. In the top 3.7 m of grain, R. dominica, C. ferrugineus, T. castaneum and Sitophilus oryzae made up 44, 36, 19 and 1% of the insects found in the samples, respectively. From 3.8 to 12.2 m, R. dominica, C. ferrugineus, T. castaneum and S. oryzae were present at 84, 8, 8, and 1%, respectively. The most prevalent species also changed over time. In June, the start of wheat harvesting and storage in Kansas, insect density was low in the bins. At this time, C. ferrugineus was the most common insect, and it was found mostly in the top grain sample (0-1.2 m). In September through November, C. ferrugineus and R. dominica were at similar densities; however, from February to March, R. dominica was more common.Generally, insect density was greatest at the top and decreased with grain depth. Very few insects were found in samples collected from greater than 12 m (most of the bins contained grain to depths of 24-36 m). Insect density for all species increased rapidly from June through October. During this period less than 20% of the bins had economically significant insect densities (>2 insects/kg). From October until February, the average insect density remained fairly constant but it was greatly reduced in April, May, and June. This paper covers the basic phenomena involved in the aging of capacitors constructed using polymer films as the major dielectric material. A wide variety of aging phenomena can be identified, ranging from simple electrical, dielectric, thermal, radiation, chemical and physical aging, to aging originating from the specific construction of the capacitor. Some phenomena occur quickly, such as some morphological changes in the polymer, others occur progressively, and others occur later in the life of the capacitor. The polymers covered range from biaxially-oriented polypropylene, which is widely used in commercial utility and industrial capacitors, to polymers like polycarbonate, polysulfone, polyimide, and polyvinylidene fluoride, which are used in high-energy density, outer-space, high-temperature, or other special applications. The paper addresses two constructions of polymer film capacitor where the aging phenomena are significantly different due to the differences in construction: polymer/foil capacitors and metalized film capacitors. Metalized polymer film capacitors have the quality of clearing or self healing that is not present in film/foil capacitors. As part of comprehensive joint medical surveillance measures outlined by the Department of Defense, the US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM) is beginning to assess environmental health threats to continental US military installations. A common theme in comprehensive joint medical surveillance, in support of Force Health Protection, is the identification and assessment of potential environmental health hazards, and the evaluation and documentation of actual exposures in both a continental US and outside a continental US setting. For the continental US assessments, the USACHPPM has utilized the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) database for risk management plans in accordance with Public Law 106-40, and the toxic release inventory database, in a state-of the art geographic information systems based program, termed the Consequence Assessment and Management Tool Set, or CATS, for assessing homeland industrial chemical hazards outside the military gates. As an example, the US EPA toxic release inventory and risk management plans databases are queried to determine the types and locations of industries surrounding a continental US military installation. Contaminants of concern are then ranked with respect to known toxicological and physical hazards, where they are then subject to applicable downwind hazard simulations using applicable meteorological and climatological data sets. The composite downwind hazard areas are mapped in relation to emergency response planning guidelines (ERPG), which were developed by the American Industrial Hygiene Association to assist emergency response personnel planning for catastrophic chemical releases. In addition, other geographic referenced data such as transportation routes, satellite imagery and population data are included in the operational, equipment, and morale risk assessment and management process. These techniques have been developed to assist military medical planners and operations personnel in determining the industrial hazards, vulnerability assessments and health risk assessments to continental United States military installations. These techniques and procedures support the Department of Defense Force Protection measures, which provides awareness of a terrorism threat, appropriate measures to prevent terrorist attacks and mitigate terrorism's effects in the event that preventive measures are ineffective. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of percutaneous transluminal cerebral balloon angioplasty (PTCBA) of extra- and intra-cranial arteries by investigating procedural outcome. Eighty haemodynamically significant extra- and intra-cranial lesions (% diameter stenosis > 70) in 74 clinically symptomatic patients were treated by elective and initial PTCBA between March 1991 and February 1996 and thereafter followed. Death, stroke, surgery, or repeated angioplasty of restenosis or new lesions were regarded as cerebral events after the initial PTCBA. The procedural and clinical success rates were 81 % (65 of 80) and 81 % (60 of 74), respectively. Progressively ischaemic symptoms disappeared completely after clinically successful dilatation. Angiographic restenosis rate at 3 months was 22 %(14 of 65). By life-table method, the death/stroke risk was 16 %, and any cerebral event risk was 49 % at 2 years following PTCBA, respectively. The most common of first cerebral events presented was repeated angioplasty of restenosis. In conclusion, PTCBA has great efficacy in decreasing recurrent neurological symptoms and produces a favourable short-term outcome, whereas restenosis limits long-term benefit. 相似文献

Low molecular mass polypeptides (LMP) 2 and LMP7 and transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) subunits TAP1 and TAP2 play a crucial role in antigen processing and cell surface expression of HLA class I molecules. Since monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to these molecules will facilitate the analysis of their expression, structure and function in normal and transformed cells, in the present study we have developed these reagents. Specifically anti-LMP2 and LMP7 mAb were generated from BALB/c mice immunized with specific peptides, and anti-TAP1 and TAP2 mAb from BALB/c mice immunized with respective recombinant proteins. mAb VF101-39F7 and VF101-39G5 were shown to be specific for LMP2, mAb VF103-5D5 and VF103-8C2 for LMP7, mAb VF108-1B3 and VF108-12D6 for TAP1 and mAb VF118-1E4 and VF118-2C5 for TAP2, since they reacted specifically with the corresponding immunogens in ELISA and with the corresponding LMP and TAP subunits when tested in Western blotting with human lymphoid cell extracts. Furthermore, the mAb immunoprecipitated components with the characteristic electrophoretic mobility from lymphoid cells. Both anti-LMP and anti-TAP mAb stained keratinocytes and infiltrating lymphocytes in frozen and formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded sections of normal skin in indirect immunoperoxidase reactions. Furthermore, all the mAb except mAb VF103-5D5 stained the cytoplasm of lymphoid cells in an intracytoplasmic staining reaction. The specificity and reactivity pattern of the mAb we have characterized indicate that they will be valuable reagents to analyze the cellular expression and tissue distribution of LMP and TAP subunits. 相似文献

Abstract— The role of residual stresses in the warm prestress (WPS) effect has been investigated. Three types of specimen have been tested in this investigation: smooth uniaxial tensile specimens, blunt notched single edge notched bend (SENB) specimens and sharply precracked SENB specimens. Room temperature prestraining of uniaxial tensile specimens leads to a dramatic decrease in the measured nominal fracture stress at — 196°C. Such an embrittling effect may be expected to reduce the beneficial increase in subsequent fracture toughness commonly observed in WPS sequences. The blunt-notched specimens were prestressed in tension and compression. Compressive prestressing was found to lead to a decrease in subsequent fracture load whereas tensile prestressing leads to an increase. The load decrease following a compressive WPS was greater than the load increase following a tensile WPS. Various sequences of loading, unloading and cooling have been investigated and the differences in the subsequent fracture behaviour of specimens have been explained qualitatively by superposition arguments. The theories of Chell and Curry have been supported by the general trend of results. 相似文献
