An efficient implementation of SELF, a dynamically-typed object-oriented language based on prototypes

We have developed and implemented techniques that double the performance of dynamically-typed object-oriented languages. Our SELF implementation runs twice as fast as the fastest Smalltalk implementation, despite SELF's lack of classes and explicit variables.To compensate for the absence of classes, our system uses implementation-levelmaps to transparently group objects cloned from the same prototype, providing data type information and eliminating the apparent space overhead for prototype-based systems. To compensate for dynamic typing, user-defined control structures, and the lack of explicit variables, our system dynamically compilesmultiple versions of a source method, eachcustomized according to its receiver's map. Within each version the type of the receiver is fixed, and thus the compiler can statically bind andinline all messages sent toself.Message splitting andtype prediction extract and preserve even more static type information, allowing the compiler to inline many other messages. Inlining dramatically improves performance and eliminates the need to hard-wire low-level methods such as+, ==, andifTrue:.Despite inlining and other optimizations, our system still supports interactive programming environments. The system traverses internal dependency lists to invalidate all compiled methods affected by a programming change. An investigation of the unstable region for dense phase conveying in sliding bed flow

For fine powdered materials, capable of being conveyed in dense phase, a conveying region exists in which instability in flow and pipeline blockage can occur if the pressure gradient available is insufficient to maintain a minimum value of solids loading ratio. A reduction in material flow rate can also lead to pipeline blockage in this region. Conveying trials under-taken with cement are used to illustrate the nature of the problem.     

Evaluating the design of flexible manufacturing systems

Evaluating the design of flexible manufacturing systems is complex. Developing a measure of performance useful for evaluating alternate designs continues to be interesting. Here, total productivity of the system is proposed as an appropriate measure. Specification of parameters based upon strategic considerations for this measure are discussed. Finally, the usefulness of the measure is demonstrated through an example.     

Moral reasoning and moral concerns: An alternative to Gilligan's gender based hypothesis.

Studied the differences in moral orientation in terms of gender specific modes of reasoning, in 2 experiments. In Exp 1, 32 Ss (aged 24–55 yrs) were read the "Heinz dilemma," and asked 3 questions regarding it. Deliberative and justificatory strategies were identified on the basis of the presence or absence of the higher level knowledge structures. In Exp 2, 40 undergraduates were presented with "Michael and Kohlberg Heinz dilemma," followed by a set of relevant questions. Male Ss preferred to apply a norm or rule in their solutions, while females rejected the application of a norm and sought alternative solutions. This was replicated in Exp 2, but the pattern was reversed with female Ss preferring to apply a norm. Males were divided in their use of either strategy indicating that although, genders differed in their judgments as to which norms or rules to apply; once adopted, norms and rules were used in similar ways. A novel automated image analysis method for maceral analysis

A new image analysis technique has been developed which allows maceral analysis of coal to be carried out. The technique is able to separate the liptinite component from the background resin by using two separate images of the surface captured with different camera exposure times. At normal exposure, the liptinite has a similar grey scale value to the surrounding resin, but at a higher exposure time, the resin remains black whilst the liptinite grey scale increases significantly enough to distinguish it from the resin. The method has been tested for repeatability and reproducibility and found to be within the ISO Standard requirements.     

The Study of Heterogeneous Catalysts by High-Resolution Transmission Electron MicroscoDV

Advances in instrumentation have made it possible in recent years to study the microstructure of inorganic materials at atomic resolution using the technique of high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). Details of instrumentation have been described elsewhere [l], and applications and trends for HREM have recently been reviewed [2]. Although HREM is primarily a technique for studying bulk defects, it is increasingly also being applied in the profile-imaging mode to derive information about surfaces [3]. The high spatial resolution of the electron microscope makes it a valuable tool for the characterization of heterogeneous catalysts. This is evidenced by the growing number of studies wherein electron micrographs are being used to describe the morphology of a particular catalyst. Profile imaging is proving particularly useful in this regard for following changes in surface structure as a function of treatment conditions [4].     

Plasma insulin-like growth factor-I, CA-125, estrogen, and progesterone in women with leiomyomas

OBJECTIVE: To determine plasma levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), CA-125, estrone (E1), E2, and P in women with uterine leiomyomas compared with normal women. DESIGN: Women with leiomyomas were compared with normal women (control). SETTING: University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. PATIENTS: Fifty-one premenopausal women with uterine myomas > 14 weeks gestation and 30 normal fertile women (controls) were studied. Peripheral blood samples were obtained before myomectomy or hysterectomy and during the nonmenstruating phase in the controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Plasma levels of E1, E2, P, CA-125, and IGF-I were determined by specific and sensitive RIAs and immunoradiometric assays. RESULTS: Plasma IGF-I levels were 2,006 +/- 185 mU/mL (mean +/- SEM, n = 35) and 2,335 +/- 287 mU/mL (n = 16) in women with leiomyomas during the follicular and luteal phases, respectively, whereas the corresponding values for normal women were 1,702 +/- 120 (n = 30) and 1,774 +/- 239 mU/mL (n = 30). Similarly, plasma CA-125 levels were unchanged in women with leiomyomas (myomas: 18.8 +/- 2.4, 21.5 +/- 3.7 U/mL; normal: 15.9 +/- 1.5, 15.8 +/- 1.3 U/mL during follicular and luteal phases, respectively). Women with leiomyomas had plasma E1, E2, and P levels during the follicular phase (91.9 +/- 11.5 pg/mL; conversion factor to SI unit, 3.699; 94.6 +/- 19.0 pg/mL; conversion factor to SI unit, 3.671; and 1.5 +/- 0.4 ng/mL; conversion factor to SI unit, 3.180, respectively) and the luteal phase (105.8 +/- 11.2 pg/mL; conversion factor to SI unit, 3.699; 128.7 +/- 24.8 pg/mL; conversion factor to SI unit, 3.671; and 9.6 +/- 1.6 ng/mL; conversion factor to SI unit, 3.180) similar to normal women. CONCLUSION: Plasma levels of IGF-I, CA-125, E1, E2, and P are normal in women with leiomyomas.     

Earvin "Magic" Johnson's HIV serostatus disclosure: Effects on men's perceptions of AIDS.

The effects of celebrity self-disclosure of HIV seropositivity on perceptions of HIV and AIDS were investigated. AIDS-related interest and knowledge measures were collected from 468 men before and after basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson's self-disclosure of HIV seropositivity. Increased interest in AIDS paralleled media coverage of the announcement, with the most substantial effects occurring within 2 wks. Perceived impact of the disclosure was greatest among African-American men and men who had not previously known someone with HIV/AIDS. Celebrity self-disclosure appears to affect perceptions through mechanisms similar to those involved in personally knowing someone infected with HIV.
