The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effect of dietary vitamin E supplementation on pork quality, and in particular on colour stability. Crossbred pigs (n = 72) at a mean weight of 44 kg were assigned to one of two treatments. One group received, during a period of 84 days prior to slaughter, a tapioca based diet, which contained 8 mg vitamin E per kg feed. The other group received during this period the same diet, except it was supplemented with 200 mg vitamin E per kg feed. Muscle samples of longissimus thoracis and lumborum (LL) and psoas (PM) were collected at 24 hr post mortem and meat quality was assessed: pH, drip and cooking loss, shear force and intramuscular fat content. Colour stability was evaluated in fresh muscle (LL and PM) and after freezing (LL only) by measuring redness (a(?)-values) during 6 days of storage at 7 °C. TBA-values and microbiological counts were also determined during storage. Results showed that extra dietary vitamin E had no effect on pig performance (daily gain, feed efficiency, lean meat percentage) nor on meat quality traits. The vitamin E levels were five times higher in the muscles of the treated group than the control group. In comparison with fresh LL muscle, colour stability was lower in PM and after freezing. In both muscles, the vitamin E treatment reduced TBA-values, in particular after frozen storage. No effect was found on microbiological counts. Colour stability was improved in LL after 6 days of storage, but not in PM. The effect in LL is too late to be of practical significance, since pork is usually sold well before that time in The Netherlands. It is suggested that variation in feedstuff composition of the diet may possibly explain part of the variable results reported in literature for the effect of vitamin E supplementation on colour stability of pork. 相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine the apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids and the digestible energy (DE) content of two samples of naked oats (Avena sativa cv Bandicoot) and to compare these parameters in wheat (Triticum aestivum cv Machete) and dehulled oats (groats; Avena sativa cv Echidna). Four Large White male pigs were fitted with simple T-piece ileal cannulae and allocated to experimental diets in a 4×4 Latin square design. Amino acid digestibility coefficients were determined after continuous eight hour collections of digesta over two consecutive days using acid-insoluble ash as an indigestible marker. Digestible energy was determined using grab samples of faeces. No significant difference between the four test cereals was found in the digestibility of all amino acids, except for proline and lysine. The apparent ileal digestibility of lysine in wheat (0·87) and two samples of naked oats (0·89 and 0·82, respectively) was lower (P<0·05) than dehulled oats (0·91). The mean DE value of the naked oats samples was 16·96 MJ kg−1 (air-dry basis). The results suggest that Bandicoot naked oats and dehulled oats are superior amino acid and DE sources to wheat and have potential for use in weaner and grower pig diets. © 1998 SCI. 相似文献

Hypoallergenic novel foods may have benefits for food-allergic consumers. However, other novel foods may exacerbate the problems associated with food allergy. This paper reviews the existing legislation associated with the introduction of novel foods and specifically considers its coverage of allergy risks and benefits. Various regulations are in place to protect consumer health. These regulations require novel food safety to be assessed before they can enter the market, but do not specify how this assessment, which includes allergenicity, should be performed. To protect consumers from Salmonella infection acquired through the consumption of pork meat, it is necessary to eradicate Salmonella from pork. In order to achieve this, the whole pork production chain should be free from Salmonella, including the pigs at the farm. In epidemiological studies it was concluded that the use of fermented feed plays a significant role in the reduction of Salmonella prevalence in pig farms. However, the mechanism of Salmonella reduction in fermented feed is not known. A controlled feed fermentation was performed using a pure culture of Lactobacillus plantarum. pH reduction, organic acid profiles and bacterial counts were determined. In L plantarum‐fermented feed, lactic acid and acetic acid were produced and the pH dropped to a value below 4.0. Antimicrobial products (bacteriocins) could not be detected. The results showed that the produced lactic and acetic acid and the pH in the feed are responsible for Salmonella reduction in fermented feed. The chemically enhanced primary treatment works in Hong Kong will be upgraded for biological nitrogen removal. This study proposed a novel approach to waive the upgrading by urine source-separation, onsite nitrification and discharge of nitrified urine into sewers to achieve in-sewer denitrification. Human urine was collected and a lab-scale experiment for full urine nitrification was conducted. The results showed that full nitrification was achieved with alkaline addition. Simulation of nitrified urine discharge into an 8-km pressure main in Hong Kong was conducted with a quasi-2D dynamic sewer model developed from a previously calibrated sewer biofilm model. It was assumed that 70% of the residents' urine was collected and fully nitrified on-site. The simulation results revealed that the proposed approach is effective in removal of nitrogen within the sewer, which decreases ammonia-N at the sewer outlet to a level required for secondary effluent discharge in Hong Kong. 相似文献

A rapid presence/absence test for Campylobacter in chicken faeces is being evaluated to support the scheduling of highly contaminated broiler flocks as a measure to reduce public health risks [Nauta, M. J., & Havelaar, A. H. (2008). Risk-based standards for Campylobacter in the broiler meat chain. Food Control, 19, 372–381]. Although the presence/absence test is still under development, an example data set of test results is analysed to illustrate the benefit of the detection probability concept. The detection probability of Campylobacter increases with the logarithm of the Campylobacter concentration in faeces according to an S-shaped curve which stretches about 2–3 log units. The detection probability is 50% at a Campylobacter concentration of 7.4 × 106 cfu/g. The uncertainty in the detection probability is 32% at the most for a 90% confidence interval. This type of information allows for realistic calculations on the Campylobacter status of different food processing paths after splitting. Usable quantitative estimates on detection probability await a data set of test results from a test that is ready for use or has similar properties. 相似文献

A multi-country, multi-sector computable general equilibrium (CGE) model is used for the first time to evaluate the economic and water resource availability effects of trade liberalization (removal of import tariffs) and facilitation (reducing non-tariff barriers) under climate change in the Nile Basin. The analysis uses the GTAP 9 Database and the GTAP-W model that distinguishes between rainfed and irrigated agriculture and implements water as a factor of production directly substitutable in the production process of irrigated agriculture. A full trade liberalization and improved trade facilitation scenario is considered with and without climate change. The study reveals that trade liberalization and facilitation generates substantial economic benefits and enhances economic growth and welfare in the Nile basin. The effect of instituting a free trade policy on water savings is found to be limited, while climate change improves water supply and hence irrigation water use, enhancing economic growth and welfare in the basin. 相似文献

Integrated river basin management (IRBM) calls for participatory practices involving stakeholders along transnational river landscapes. Understanding the complex and diverse views regarding participation is a prerequisite for meaningful involvement of civil actors, especially in a transnational context. In a case study along the Lower Rhine river, we assessed and compared cognitive perceptions towards IRBM of citizen initiatives and nature organizations from Germany and the Netherlands and their previous experiences with participation processes.We found large differences between the four actor groups in motivations to participate as well as in levels of trust towards institutions. This study also showed different views on participation between the two countries with regard to the problem definition, nature images and the perceived relationships between government organisations on the one hand and citizen initiatives and nature organisations on the other hand.The findings suggest that views vary between citizen initiatives and nature organizations within a country and that cultural notions add to the complexity of transnational participation. In transnational participation processes, the varying views between actor groups should be taken into account, as well as the complexities among countries even within actor groups. 相似文献

Platinum metal was dispersed on microporous, mesoporous, and nonporous support materials including the zeolites Na-Y, Ba-Y, Ferrierite, ZSM-22, ETS-10, and AIPO-11, alumina, and titania. The oxidation of carbon black loosely mixed with catalyst powder was monitored gravimetrically in a gas stream containing nitric oxide, oxygen, and water. The carbon oxidation activity of the catalysts was found to be uniquely related to the Pt dispersion and little influenced by support type. The optimum dispersion is around 3-4% corresponding to relatively large Pt particle sizes of 20-40 nm. The carbon oxidation activity reflects the NO oxidation activity of the platinum catalyst, which reaches an optimum in the 20-40 nm Pt particle size range. The lowest carbon oxidation temperatures were achieved with platinum loaded ZSM-22 and AIPO-11 zeolite crystallites bearing platinum of optimum dispersion on their external surfaces. 相似文献
