Lake Victoria is Africa's most important source of inland fishery production, exhibiting annual catches of ≈ 400 000 mt. The predatory Nile perch, Lates niloticus, and the herbivorous tilapiines, Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis leucostictus, Tilapia zillii and Tilapia rendalii, were introduced in Lake Victoria in the 1950s and 1960s. Nile perch were introduced to convert the abundant, but bony, haplochromines to fish flesh, while the tilapiines were introduced to boost the declining fishery. Since that time, the fisheries of Lake Victoria have undergone dramatic social and ecological changes. The catches increased tremendously, changing the fishery from artisanal to commercial, in turn increasing fisher income and employment opportunities. However, there was a decline and, in some cases, the disappearance of many indigenous fish species, especially the haplochromine cichlids. This reduction was attributed to overexploitation, predation, and competition and hybridization with the introduced species. The decline of the native fish species has had impacts on the trophic and ecological status of the lake. Nile perch now dominate the formerly complex food web. The loss of phytoplanktivorous haplochromines has contributed to an increase in algal blooms, reduction in water quality and occasional fish kills. Water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, invaded Lake Victoria in 1988, with high rates of infestation in shallow waters and bays, which are breeding and nursery grounds for most fish species. Catches of Nile perch decreased following the infestation, while those of Nile tilapia, lung fish (Protopterus aethiopicus) and mud fish (Clarias gariepinus) increased. Haplochromines species also showed some signs of recovery. In view of all these changes, the future of the Lake Victoria fishery is uncertain.  相似文献

Abstract

Due to increasingly frequent incidents of pluvial flooding of public spaces and private properties, climate-adaptive building and urban water management are gaining momentum in Dutch water governance. This study assesses the Dutch approach to urban water management by looking at the governance approaches of three of the largest Dutch municipalities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. By analyzing the municipalities’ governance approaches in a holistic way, paying attention to knowledge, organization and implementation, the research provides good practices in terms of different aspects of resilience as well as lessons regarding setting performance indicators in service levels, clarifying responsibility division, applying binding rules instead of soft policies, and more.  相似文献

Encapsulated and series-connected amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H) based thin film silicon solar modules were developed in the superstrate configuration using an aluminum foil as temporary substrate during processing and a commodity polymer as permanent substrate in the finished module. For the development of μc-Si:H single junction modules, aspects regarding TCO conductivity, TCO reduction, deposition uniformity, substrate temperature stability and surface morphology were addressed. It was established that on sharp TCO morphologies where single junction μc-Si:H solar cells fail, tandem structures consisting of an a-Si:H top cell and a μc-Si:H bottom cell can still show a good performance. Initial aperture area efficiencies of 8.2%, 3.9% and 9.4% were obtained for fully encapsulated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) single junction, microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H) single junction and a-Si:H/μc-Si:H tandem junction modules, respectively.  相似文献

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a new legislative framework to manage, use, protect, and restore surface water and groundwater resources and coastal waters in the European Union (EU). The aim is to ensure sustainable water management and to reach good water quality by 2015. The assessment of the ecological status and setting of the practical management goals require several steps. The process has started with the characterisation of the river basins including identification of surface water bodies and types, and identification of significant anthropogenic pressures and impacts. The water bodies will be classified in five quality classes (high, good, moderate, poor, bad) based on the Ecological Quality Ratio, which is a ratio between reference conditions and measured status of the biological quality elements. The normative criteria for high, good and moderate ecological status described in the WFD need to be made operational because those will be used to set the practical quality targets for surface water management. National ecological assessment systems and classifications will be harmonised through the WFD intercalibration exercise in order to ensure an equal level of ambition in achieving good surface waters status all over Europe.  相似文献

Summary Sodium, potassium, arsenic, selenium and tin have been determined in 38 different types of domestic and imported fresh fruits. All samples (n=242) were analysed for Na und K whereas a limited number of samples (n=85) of each fruit type was selected for the determination of As, Se and Sn. The median contents, in mass fractions of the edible portion, found for fresh fruits are: Na<0.001%; K 0.17%; As 4 g/kg; Se 2 g/kg and Sn< 0.05 mg/kg. The corresponding 90th percentile values are: Na 0,002%, K 0.34%; As 12 g/kg; Se 10 g/kg and Sn 0.10 mg/kg. Results for selenium reported here differ substantially from those given for a number of fresh fruits in the German Food Composition Tables 1986/1987. The average consumption of 129 g fresh fruit by Dutch citizens in the age category of 22–75 years contributes, in general, marginally to the total daily dietary intake of sodium, arsenic, selenium and tin. Fresh fruit can contribute substantially, up to 23%, to the average oral daily intake of potassium.

Zusammenfassung Natrium, Kalium, Arsen, Selen und Zinn wurden in 38 verschiedenen Sorten von in- und ausländischem Frischobst bestimmt. Alle Proben (n=242) wurden auf Na und K untersucht; während nur eine beschränkte Zahl von Proben (n=85) für die Bestimmung von As, Se und Sn ausgewählt wurde. Die Medianwerte, in Massenanteilen der eßbaren Portionen, betrugen für frisches Obst: Na<0,001%; K 0,17% As 4 g/kg; Se 2 g/kg und Sn<0,05 mg/kg. Die dazugehörigen Werte für den 90 Perzentil sind: Na 0,002%; K 0,34%; As 12 g/kg; Se 10 g/kg und Sn 0,10 mg/kg. Für einige Obstsorten wurden Selenwerte erhalten, die erheblich von denen der Deutschen Nährwert-Tabellen 1986/1987 abweichen. Frischobst, dessen Verzehr für Einwohner der Niederlande in der Altersklasse von 22–75 Jahre im Schnitt 129 g/Tag beträgt, liefert einen vernachlässigbaren Beitrag zur täglichen Einnahme von Natrium, Arsen, Selen und Zinn; für Kalium hingegen kann dieser Beitrag, mit bis zu 23%, erheblich sein.

Lactic acid-grown cells of a strain of Kluyveromyces marxianus transported D- and L-lactic acid by a saturable mechanism that was partially inducible and subject to glucose repression, with the following kinetic parameters at pH 5.4: Vmax = 1.00 (+/- 0.13) mmol h-1 per g dry weight and Ks = 0.42 (+/- 0.08) mM. Lactic acid transport was competitively inhibited by pyruvic, glycolic, acetic and bromoacetic acids. The latter, a non-metabolizable analogue, was transiently accumulated, the extent depending on the extracellular pH. The pH dependence of the Ks values for undissociated lactic acid and for the lactate anion indicated that the latter was the transported species. Lactate uptake was not accompanied by the simultaneous uptake of protons, potassium ions or sodium ions excluding symport mechanisms. Initial lactic acid uptake led to transient membrane hyperpolarization as measured with a fluorescent dye excluding also an electroneutral anion antiport mechanism. It was concluded that lactate anions use a monocarboxylate uniport and that the counter anion, possibly bicarbonate, uses a separate channel, the coupling being electrical and loose.  相似文献

GFI and GFII are abundant DNA-binding proteins in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Binding sites for GFI conform to the sequence 5'-RTCRYNNNNNACG-3'. This consensus can also accommodate the recognition sequence for the ARS1-binding factor ABFI. Results of retardation-competition assays, limited proteolysis experiments, molecular weight determinations based on denaturation-renaturation procedures and mobility shift assays of protein-DNA complexes formed in the presence of a monoclonal antibody raised against ABFI suggest strongly that GFI and ABFI are the same protein. Similarly, GFII appears to be identical to the centromere-binding protein CPF1 (alias CP1), since both proteins bind to the CDEI motif of yeast centromeres (5'-RTCACRTG-3') and cannot be detected in a cpf1 disruption mutant yeast strain. In addition, based on denaturation-renaturation studies, both factors appear to have molecular weights in the same range of 53-62 kDa.  相似文献

Alcohol oxidase (AO) catalyses the first step of methanol metabolism in yeasts. In vivo the enzyme is compartmentalized in special cell compartments, called peroxisomes. The enzyme along with the organelles are induced during growth of methylotrophic yeasts on methanol as the sole carbon source. Like all other peroxisomal matrix proteins, AO is encoded by a nuclear gene. Expression of the protein is regulated by a repression/derepression mechanism, but also by induction. Inactive monomeric precursor protein is synthesized in the cytosol and subsequently imported post-translationally into peroxisomes without further processing. Assembly into the active homo-octameric enzyme and binding of the prosthetic group flavin adenine dinucleotide occurs inside the organelle. When enhanced concentration of octameric alcohol oxidase are present in the organelles, the enzyme may form a crystalloid. Oligomerization is not dependent on translocation of AO precursors into their target organelle since octameric, active AO is detected in the cytosol and nucleus of peroxisome-deficient mutants of Hansenula polymorpha: at high expression rates large cytosolic AO crystalloids are formed, which occasionally are also encountered inside the nucleus of such mutants. This paper summarizes recent findings and views on the mechanisms involved in synthesis, import, assembly and crystallization of this important peroxisomal enzyme.  相似文献

The incidence rate of clinical mastitis due to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was studied in 125 herds with a low annual bulk milk somatic cell count (less than 150,000 cells/ml). Risk factors that were offered to a multivariate Poisson regression model included general management, housing, cleaning procedures, cow and cubicle cleanliness, feeds and feeding, dry cow management, milking procedures, machine milking, disease prevention, and milk production. Some differences in epidemiology between E. coli and S. aureus were observed. In the S. aureus model, more milking procedure and milking machine variables were present. The milk production, drinking water source, amount of bedding, and ventilation were other important factors in the S. aureus model. Teat disinfection was an important risk factor in the E. coli model but was much less important in the S. aureus model. Cleaning procedures were more important in the E. coli model. The main breed on the farm and percentage of cows leaking milk were other important factors in the E. coli model.  相似文献
