Patterns of self-disclosure in psychotherapy and marriage.

This study compared patterns of self-disclosure in psychotherapy and marriage. Participants (48 married, current psychotherapy patients, mean age = 42) completed a 101-item Disclosure to Therapist Inventory and a companion measure, a 101-item Disclosure to Spouse Inventory. Results indicated a pattern of greater disclosure to one's therapist in regard to issues involving despair (e.g., feelings of depression), and to one's spouse in regard to procreation and body concerns (e.g., birth control) and values (e.g., feelings about religion, race, or politics). Issues involving sex were infrequently discussed in either context. Discrepancy scores (differences between extent of disclosure and perceived importance) were greater in the spouse condition. Outcome predictors varied by situation, with overall disclosure predicting therapeutic outcome and both overall disclosure and discrepancy scores predicting marital satisfaction. Findings suggest that although there is substantial overlap in issues discussed in these two contexts, certain intimate disclosures are perceived as situation-specific. Dislocations, kink bands, and room-temperature plasticity of Ti3SiC2

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of aligned, macrograined samples of Ti₃SiC₂, deformed at room temperature, shows that the deformed microstructure is characterized by a high density of perfect basal-plane dislocations with a Burgers vector of 1/3〈112 0〉. The dislocations are overwhelmingly arranged either in arrays, wherein the dislocations exist on identical slip planes, or in dislocations walls, wherein the same dislocations form a low-angle grain boundary normal to the basal planes. The arrays propagate across entire grains and are responsible for deformation by shear. The walls form as a result of the formation of kink bands. A dislocation-based model, that builds on earlier ideas proposed for kink-band formation in hexagonal metallic single crystals, is presented, which explains most of the microstructural features. The basic elements of the model are shear deformation by dislocation arrays, cavitation, creation of dislocation walls and kink boundaries, buckling, and delamination. The delaminations are not random, but successively bisect the delaminating sections. The delaminations and associated damage are contained by the kink boundaries. This containment of damage is believed to play a major role in endowing Ti₃SiC₂ and, by extension, related ternary carbides and nitrides with their damage-tolerant properties.     

Closed-cycle, solar, hot-air engines Part 2—A 1/3-Hp, pressurized engine

This paper discusses the latest closed-cycle engine in the development of small solar engines being carried out at the Solar Energy Laboratory of the University of Florida. It describes the design and construction of the engine, gives the performance efficiency of the engine and demonstrates how pressurization improves the power output of the engine.     

Characteristic Features of the Kinetics of Decomposition of Supercooled Austenite of Alloy Steels in the Pearlite Range

The kinetics of decomposition of supercooled austenite of medium-carbon Cr – Ni – Mo steels in the pearlite range is studied by dilatometric and metallographic methods with computer processing of the data. It is shown that the rate of the decomposition of supercooled austenite in the pearlite range oscillates with a low amplitude. The changes in the exponent in the Avrami and Ostin – Rikket equations that describe the decomposition of supercooled austenite are associated with simultaneous processes of austenitic transformation whose kinetics differs substantially in local regions of the metal, which is mainly connected with the polymodal nature of the grain structure of the austenite.     

Glycine agonists: what can they teach us about schizophrenia?

Plantar fibromatosis is a rare, benign lesion involving the plantar aponeurosis. Eleven patients (13 feet) underwent 24 operations, including local excision, wide excision, or complete plantar fasciectomy. Clinical results were evaluated retrospectively. There were no differences among the subgroups in postoperative complications. Two primary fasciectomies did not recur. Three of six revised fasciectomies, seven of nine wide excisions, and six of seven local excisions recurred. Our results indicate that recurrence of plantar fibromatosis after surgical resection can be reduced by aggressive initial surgical resection.
