Stroke is a leading cause of disability in particular affecting older people. Although the causes of stroke are well known and it is possible to reduce these risks, there is still a need to improve rehabilitation techniques. Early studies in the literature suggest that early intensive therapies can enhance a patient's recovery. According to physiotherapy literature, attention and motivation are key factors for motor relearning following stroke. Machine mediated therapy offers the potential to improve the outcome of stroke patients engaged on rehabilitation for upper limb motor impairment. Haptic interfaces are a particular group of robots that are attractive due to their ability to safely interact with humans. They can enhance traditional therapy tools, provide therapy on demand and can present accurate objective measurements of a patient's progression. Our recent studies suggest the use of tele-presence and VR-based systems can potentially motivate patients to exercise for longer periods of time. The creation of human-like trajectories is essential for retraining upper limb movements of people that have lost manipulation functions following stroke. By coupling models for human arm movement with haptic interfaces and VR technology it is possible to create a new class of robot mediated neuro rehabilitation tools. This paper provides an overview on different approaches to robot mediated therapy and describes a system based on haptics and virtual reality visualisation techniques, where particular emphasis is given to different control strategies for interaction derived from minimum jerk theory and the aid of virtual and mixed reality based exercises.  相似文献

Jebel Dhana, from the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), operates two 2 MGD multi-effect thermo-compression distillers commissioned in 1996. Tube failures were first reported approximately 16 months after commissioning. The initial tube failures were from the upper rows, but more recent failures were apparently randomly distributed throughout the tube bundle. Ten tubes were removed and their corrosion morphology was examined macroscopically and microscopically. The corrosion products were analysed by X-ray, EDAX, and EPMA techniques. The copper nickel alloy tubes were found to have suffered from vapour side corrosion; however, there was no sign of any copper oxide deposition, as has often been seen in failed tubes from MSF distillers. The failures took two forms: corrosion fatigue cracking, and pitting corrosion. The corrosion fatigue was in the form of a circumferential crack at a flat portion of the tube in the centre of a tube span. It was believed that the flat surface had developed as a result of fretting against a neighbouring tube, and had been worn away to the point of failure. Unfortunately, the position of the tubes in the tube bundle had not been identified during their removal, but it is suspected that the damaged tube had been in the top row, with the flattened portion directly below one of the two vapour inlet pipes. The other tubes sampled showed pitting corrosion. Some of the pitting had perforated the tube walls whilst others showed pitting on the outer surface only. Some of the pits contained corrosion products whilst others were free of them. This pitting corrosion is attributed to the formation of carbonic acid in the presence of oxygen (air). A weak acid is formed due to the dissolution of CO2 in the condensing water vapour. The gas concentration varies within the tube bundle, due to the vapour phase, allowing the gas concentration to increase in specific areas of the tube bundle, causing the non-uniformity of attack. There was no immediate tie-up between the pitting corrosion and the two steam inlet pipes due to the unknown position of the sampled tubes within the tube bundle. It is recommended that the oxygen level be reduced by ensuring that the distiller vessels are as air-tight as possible, thus reducing the tendency towards pitting corrosion.  相似文献

Recently microfluidic devices have emerged as a viable technology for the miniaturization of high throughput tools for analytical tasks related to structural biology such as screening of crystallization conditions and structural analysis. This work reports the manufacture of microfluidic chips in transparent thermoplastic polymers [poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA), and cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)] using two complementary technologies, injection moulding for the fabrication of the fluidic level and laser transmission welding for the sealing of the cover. A steel mould insert was produced by laser micro caving using a solid state laser radiation source (Nd:YAG, wavelength 1,064 nm). Fluidic chips of ~670 μm thickness comprising channels of 50 μm depth and width down to 50 μm were injection moulded in PMMA and COC. Joining of transparent thin cover film to the micro-injected fluidic level was performed by laser transmission welding using high power diode laser radiation (wavelength 940 nm) and an intermediate thin absorbing layer with a thickness of about several nanometers.  相似文献

Pre-mRNA splicing is an essential step in gene expression and is catalyzed by two machineries in eukaryotes: the major (U2 type) and minor (U12 type) spliceosomes. While the majority of introns in humans are U2 type, less than 0.4% are U12 type, also known as minor introns (mi-INTs), and require a specialized spliceosome composed of U11, U12, U4atac, U5, and U6atac snRNPs. The high evolutionary conservation and apparent splicing inefficiency of U12 introns have set them apart from their major counterparts and led to speculations on the purpose for their existence. However, recent studies challenged the simple concept of mi-INTs splicing inefficiency due to low abundance of their spliceosome and confirmed their regulatory role in alternative splicing, significantly impacting the expression of their host genes. Additionally, a growing list of minor spliceosome-associated diseases with tissue-specific pathologies affirmed the importance of minor splicing as a key regulatory pathway, which when deregulated could lead to tissue-specific pathologies due to specific alterations in the expression of some minor-intron-containing genes. Consequently, uncovering how mi-INTs splicing is regulated in a tissue-specific manner would allow for better understanding of disease pathogenesis and pave the way for novel therapies, which we highlight in this review.  相似文献

Pita bread loaves were prepared from flours fortified with calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and tricalcium dicitrate at 8 ascending levels to provide ranges of 800 to 2500, 700 to 1500, and 400 to 2000 mg of added Ca/100 g flour, respectively. The detection thresholds of calcium salts in pita bread were determined by the 3‐alter‐native forced choice (3‐AFC) test and construction of dose‐response curves. Detection thresholds determined by calculating geometric mean of individual best estimate thresholds, using criterion of 50%‐above‐chance and probit analysis of 3‐AFC data, were in the middle region of calcium concentrations. Analysis of dose‐response curves yielded values for thresholds outside the range of surveyed calcium concentrations. The detection threshold of CaSO4 (2724 mg/100 g) in pita bread was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than those of calcium carbonate (1984 mg/100 g) and tricalcium dicitrate (2132 mg/100 g). Calcium‐fortified pita bread was similar (P < 0.01) to its regular counterpart when formulated to contain 1254.6, 1772.5, or 1155 mg/100 g of CaCO3, CaSO4, or tricalcium dicitrate, respectively. At the indicated levels of fortification, calcium‐fortified pita bread is expected to provide between 61% and 126.5% of the recommended daily intake for calcium for Middle Eastern populations.  相似文献

In this paper, we examine the impact of antenna correlation on transmit antenna selection with receive maximal ratio combining (TAS/MRC) in multiple‐input multiple‐output multiuser underlay cognitive radio network (MIMO‐MCN) over a Nakagami‐m fading environment. The secondary network under consideration consists of a single source and M destinations equipped with multiple correlated antennas at each node. The primary network composed of L primary users, each of which is equipped with multiple correlated antennas. For the considered underlay spectrum sharing paradigm, the transmission power of the proposed secondary system is limited by the peak interference limit on the primary network and the maximum transmission power at the secondary network. In particular, we derive exact closed‐form expressions for the outage probability and average symbol error rate of the proposed secondary system. To gain further insights, simple asymptotic closed‐form expressions for the outage probability and symbol error rate are provided to obtain the achievable diversity order and coding gain of the system. In addition, the impact of antenna correlation on the secondary user ergodic capacity has been investigated by deriving closed‐form expressions for the secondary user capacity. Trace elements such as mercury, arsenic and selenium present in coal are known to be of concern for public health. Coal-fired power plants have resulted in emission of several tons of TEs in environment. These elements mostly evaporate during combustion and condense either homogeneously as sub-micron ash or heterogeneously onto already existing fine ash. The coal-mineral and mineral-mineral associations play an important role in the formation of fine particles and in subsequent condensation of trace elements in various phases. Any retention of these elements in fly ash particles is strongly influenced by their association with other minerals in individual coal and mineral grains. Clean coal technology development is, therefore, a priority area for research and needs continuous improvements in increased efficiency and decreased pollutant emission. The paper will include trace elements in different coals from around the world. It will consider different modes of occurrences present in coals, the ash formation and evaporation of trace elements and emissions. The typical emissions from typical power stations will be presented. The paper will also review different approaches adopted in estimating the deportment of these elements. The paper at the end would discuss control strategies for reducing emissions and future directions.  相似文献

Slag is an industrial waste generated during the steelmaking process. Electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and ladle furnace slag (LFS) are both produced at different stages of steelmaking process, respectively, in electric arc furnaces and refining ladle furnaces. As part of this research, an extensive suite of engineering and environmental tests were undertaken on steel slag aggregates to evaluate their potential usage as road construction materials. The engineering assessment included particle size distribution, hydrometer, organic content, flakiness index, Atterberg limits, particle density, water absorption, pH, minimum and maximum dry densities with a vibrating table, modified compaction, California bearing ratio (CBR) and Los Angeles abrasion tests. In addition, a suite of environmental tests comprising total and leachable heavy metal tests were undertaken on both types of steel slag aggregates. From an environmental perspective, EAFS and LFS were found to pose no environmental risks for use as aggregates in roadwork applications. The engineering properties of LFS aggregates with its satisfactory geotechnical and environmental results, particularly its high CBR values, indicated that the material was ideal for usage as a construction material in roadwork applications such as pavement base/subbases and engineering fills. EAFS, with its comparatively lower CBR value, was found to be only suitable to use as a construction material for pavement subbases and engineering fills. The usage of steel slag aggregates in roadwork applications would bring about a practical end-of-life alternative for their sustainable reuse and possibly divert large amount of these waste materials from landfills.  相似文献
