Natural elastomers made from protein extracts have received significant interest as eco‐friendly functional materials due to their unique mechanical and optical properties emanating from secondary structures. The next generation sequencing approach is used to identify protein sequences in a squid ring teeth complex extracted from Loligo vulgaris and the use of recombinant expression is demonstrated in the fabrication of a new generation of thermoplastic materials. Native and recombinant thermoplastic squid proteins exhibit reversible solid to melt phase transition, enabling them to be thermally shaped into 3D geometries such as fibers, colloids, and thin films. Direct extraction or recombinant expression of protein based thermoplastics opens up new avenues for materials fabrication and synthesis, which will eventually be competitive with the high‐end synthetic oil based plastics. 相似文献

The optical coupling of GaAs photodetectors integrated with LiNbO 3 waveguides using epitaxial liftoff is measured and compared to calculations based on a complex index model. The measured coupling is found to be comparable to that obtained in epitaxial semiconductor waveguide detectors, but it is lower than expected. Low coupling efficiency is attributed to the presence of a low index barrier layer, not present in semiconductor-based structures, at the GaAs-LiNbO3 interface. It is shown that the waveguide losses in lattice-mismatched GaAs-on-InP structures can be significantly reduced using an appropriate buffer layer. An AlGaAs buffer layer sequence was used for this purpose. A thin (400 nm) layer of Al0.7Ga0.3As, with an index below that of InP, was placed adjacent to the GaAs guiding layer both to maximize optical confinement in the guide and to increase the allowable guide dimensions for a single planar waveguide mode. Additional separation between guide and mismatched interface was achieved by inserting an Al0.5Ga0.5As layer with an index nearly equal to that of InP between the low-index buffer and InP. The final waveguide structure also included a thin (<40 nm) GaAs layer which was used to initiate growth and did not affect waveguide performance. Low losses (typically 3 dB/cm, with best results below 1 dB/cm) were achieved at a 1.52-μm wavelength for samples grown by organometallic chemical vapor deposition 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Many elastomers are reinforced with fillers to improve their mechanical properties; good reinforcement requires favorable interactions between the elastomeric chains and the surfaces of the filler particles. A useful goal is the development of computational methods that estimate these interactions, and thereby guide choices of fillers for elastomers based on the structures of the two components in nanocomposites in general. RESULTS: Experimental results available from inverse gas chromatography rank nitriles, aromatics and 1‐alkenes with regard to the magnitude of favorable interactions with silica reinforcing particles. Calculations using the Gaussian 03 package of computer programs were carried out, both with and without corrections for superposition errors. For the nitrile compounds, the formation of hydrogen bonds was predicted, and the interactions of the aromatic and 1‐alkene compounds with silica were shown to be dependent on electron transfer from the silica to the tested molecules. CONCLUSION: The method developed should be useful for ranking polymer–filler combinations in general with regard to the interactions known to be conducive to good reinforcement. The corrosion inhibition of a 70 wt% Cu–30Ni alloy in a 55 wt% lithium bromide (LiBr) + ethylene glycol + H2O by inorganic inhibitors has been evaluated at different temperatures by using electrochemical techniques. Inhibitors used included lithium chromate (Li2CrO4), lithium molybdate (LiMoO4), and lithium nitrate (LiNO3), in a concentration of 5 ppm at 25, 50, and 80 °C. Employed techniques included potenthiodynamic polarization curves, linear polarization resistance, and potentiostatic measurements. Results have shown that the alloy had an active–passive behavior at 25 and 50 °C, and the passive film properties were improved with the addition of inhibitors, whereas at 80 °C the inhibitors did not have any effect. Similarly, in general terms, the best corrosion performance at 25, 50, and 80 °C was obtained by adding Li2CrO4, LiNO3, and LiMoO4, respectively. However, the alloy was not susceptible to pitting corrosion in presence of inhibitors but it was highly susceptible towards pitting type of corrosion in absence of inhibitors. 相似文献

Among several nanoparticle properties, shape is important for their interaction with cells and, therefore, relevant for uptake studies and applications. In order to further investigate such characteristics, fluorescently labeled spherical polymer nanoparticles are synthesized by free-radical polymerization via the miniemulsion process. The spherical nanoparticles are subsequently submitted to controlled mechanical deformation to yield quasi-ellipsoidal polymeric nanoparticles with different aspect ratios. The uptake behaviors of spherical and non-spherical particles with equal volume are investigated qualitatively and quantitatively by electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and flow cytometry measurements. Non-spherical particles show fewer uptake by cells than their spherical counterparts with a negative correlation between aspect ratio and uptake rate. This is attributed to the larger average curvature radius of adsorbed non-spherical particles experienced by the cells. 相似文献

A 44-year-old Japanese man was diagnosed as having late adult-onset dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA), whose CAG repeats in the DRPLA gene were 60 and 15. He developed gait disturbance, limb ataxia, pyramidal tract signs, dementia, and psychiatric symptoms including character changes within a few years of the above diagnosis. His T 2-weighted brain MRI showed symmetric high-signal lesions in the cerebral white matter and brain stem, in addition to cerebellar, brain stem, and cerebral cortical atrophy. Since the results of RI cisternography indicated that he manifested the clinical features of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), V-P shunt operation was done. In a week after the operation, his gait disturbance, pyramidal tract signs, dementia and psychiatric symptoms were remarkably improved. White matter lesions have been thought to be concomitant with late adult-onset DRPLA patients, but some of these patients may have characteristics of NPH pathophysiology. 相似文献
