The global distribution of acidifying wet deposition   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The acid-base status of precipitation is a result of a balance between acidifying compounds--mainly oxides of sulfur and nitrogen--and alkaline compounds--mainly ammonia and alkaline material in windblown soil dust. We use current models of the global atmospheric distribution of such compounds to estimate the geographical distribution of pH in precipitation and of the rate of deposition of hydrogen ion or bicarbonate ion. The lowest pH values--mainly due to high concentration of sulfuric acid--occur in eastern parts of North America, Europe, and China. A comparison with observed pH values shows fair agreement in most parts of the world. However, in some areas, e.g. western North America, southwestern Europe, and northern China the estimated pH is too low, indicating that we have underestimated the deposition flux of alkaline material, probably mainly CaCO3. Our neglect of organic acids may have contributed to an overestimate of pH especially in certain tropical areas. To illustrate the potential effects of acidifying deposition on nitrogen saturated terrestrial ecosystems we also calculate the deposition of "potential acidity" that takes into account the microbial transformation of ammonium to nitrate in such ecosystems, resulting in the release of hydrogen ion. Compared to the deposition of acidity, with its maxima over Europe, eastern North America, and southern China, the deposition of potential acidity exhibits an additional maximum in India and Bangladesh and in several other smaller hot spots where the cycling of ammonia is enhanced by a dense cattle population. To the extent that soils in these areas of high potential acidity deposition actually become nitrogen saturated a depletion of base cations and other changes in soil chemistry and biology should be expected. Potential problem areas forfuture soil acidification include several regions with sensitive soils in southern, southeastern, and eastern Asia as well as in central parts of South America.  相似文献

Compound-specific carbon and hydrogen isotope analysis was used to investigate biodegradation of benzene and ethylbenzene in contaminated groundwater at Dow Benelux BV industrial site. delta13C values for dissolved benzene and ethylbenzene in downgradient samples were enriched by up to 2+/-0.5 per thousand, in 13C, compared to the delta13C value of the source area samples. delta2H values for dissolved benzene and ethylbenzene in downgradient samples exhibited larger isotopic enrichments of up to 27+/-5 per thousand for benzene and up to 50+/-5 per thousand for ethylbenzene relative to the source area. The observed carbon and hydrogen isotopic fractionation in downgradient samples provides evidence of biodegradation of both benzene and ethylbenzene within the study area at Dow Benelux BV. The estimated extents of biodegradation of benzene derived from carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions for each sample are in agreement, supporting the conclusion that biodegradation is the primary control on the observed differences in carbon and hydrogen isotope values. Combined carbon and hydrogen isotope analyses provides the ability to compare biodegradation in the field based on two different parameters, and hence provides a stronger basis for assessment of biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants.  相似文献

Annually integrated air concentrations of alpha- and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) were determined in 2000/2001 at 40 stations across North America using XAD-based passive air samplers to understand atmospheric distribution processes on a continental scale. Elevated levels of gamma-HCH in the atmosphere of the Canadian Prairies are consistent with the ongoing use of lindane as a seed treatment on canola and confirm the feasibility of detecting the agricultural use of a pesticide using long-term integrated passive air sampling. In contrast to gamma-HCH, the atmospheric concentrations of alpha-HCH show a rather uniform distribution across Canada and the United States, which is expected for a chemical with no current use on the continent. Higher levels in the atmosphere over Atlantic Canada can be explained by alpha-HCH evaporating from the waters of the Labrador Current, which is supported bythe chiral composition of alpha-HCH and the temperature dependence of its atmospheric concentrations along the east coast of Canada. Similarly, alpha-HCH is volatilizing from Lake Superior. Atmospheric HCH levels increase with elevation in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The results suggest that evaporation, in particular from cold water bodies, is an important source of alpha-HCH to the North American atmosphere. Low levels of HCHs in Central America hint at efficient degradation under tropical conditions. Chiral analysis shows that (+)-alpha-HCH is often enriched in air over continental areas and at the Pacific Coast, which is opposite to the enantiomeric enrichment in the proximity to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. Passive air sampling is a powerful tool to discern the large-scale variability of semivolatile and persistent organic chemicals in the atmosphere.  相似文献

The application of the photo-Fenton process to the treatment of saline wastewater contaminated with hydrocarbons is investigated. Aqueous saline solutions containing raw gasoline were used as a model oil-field-produced water. The dependence on concentrations of the following reagents has been appropriately evaluated: hydrogen peroxide (100-200 mM), iron ions (0.5-1 mM), and sodium chloride (200-2000 ppm). The reactions were monitored by measurement of the absorption spectra and total organic carbon (TOC). Experimental results demonstrate that the photo-Fenton process is feasible for the treatment of wastewaters containing hydrocarbons, even in the presence of high concentrations of salt. The effect of the salt in this process is described through a series of reactions. A simple feedforward neural network model was found to correlate well the observed data for the degradation process.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of feeding legume silages and providing supplemental vitamin E in concentrates on the oxidative stability of milk. In experiment 1, six multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were offered 1 of 6 silage treatments in a cyclical changeover-design experiment, with four 4-wk periods. The silages were grass, red clover, white clover, alfalfa, grass and red clover mixture (50:50 on a DM basis), and grass and white clover mixture (50:50 on a DM basis). In experiment 2, 8 cows were used in a changeover-design experiment with three 4-wk periods. The 4 treatments were a factorial combination of forages (grass silage or red clover silage) and supplemental vitamin E in the form of all-rac-alpha-tocopheryl acetate (29 or 290 IU/kg of DM in the concentrate). All forages were offered ad libitum and a flat rate of concentrates (8 kg/d) was fed in both experiments. Red clover silage led to significantly higher forage intakes, milk yields, and milk protein percentage in experiment 2, which was in agreement with results from experiment 1. There was no effect of vitamin E on feed intake, milk production, or milk fat and protein percentage. Red clover silage also led to significant changes in milk fatty acid profiles, particularly increased levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Milk samples were stored at 4 degrees C and 20 degrees C and analyzed for alpha-tocopherol and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances at intervals to determine oxidative stability. Diets based on red clover and alfalfa silages were associated with more rapid loss of alpha-tocopherol and increased production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances during the storage of milk in comparison with diets based on grass silage. The increased oxidative deterioration of milk produced from cows fed red clover silage was avoided by vitamin E supplementation.  相似文献

Listeria monocytogenes has been isolated from condensate-forming surfaces in food processing plants. The objective of this research was to observe the behavior of L. monocytogenes on condensate-covered stainless steel with a Pseudomonas putida biofilm. L. monocytogenes-containing biofilms, either with or without added chicken protein, were incubated in a high humidity chamber at 12 degrees C to allow formation of condensate. Samples were analyzed for attached and unattached L. monocytogenes and total plate count periodically for 35 days. Samples were also taken for microscopic observation of Listeria and bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). L. monocytogenes attached in significantly greater numbers (> 3-log difference) to surfaces with preexisting P. putida biofilms than to Pseudomonas-free surfaces. L. monocytogenes survived in the presence or absence of P. putida with no added nutrients for 35 days, with numbers of survivors in the range of 3 to 4 log CFU/cm2 in the presence of P. putida and less than 2.9 log CFU/cm2 in pure culture. Attached and unattached L. monocytogenes were at similar levels throughout the incubation under all conditions studied. The addition of protein to the biofilms allowed growth of L. monocytogenes in pure culture during the first 7 days of incubation. Numbers of L. monocytogenes were not affected by the presence of P. putida when protein was present. Unattached L. monocytogenes were at levels of 3.6 to 6.7 log CFU/cm2 on the protein-containing surfaces. Microscopic observation of the condensate-covered biofilms indicated that L. monocytogenes formed microcolonies embedded within an EPS matrix over a 28-day period. This research demonstrates that L. monocytogenes can survive on condensate-forming stainless steel in low and high nutrient conditions, with or without the presence of Pseudomonas biofilm. The Listeria can detach and, therefore, have the potential to contaminate product.  相似文献

Thiamine and riboflavin vitamers are present in a wide range of foods including beer. These vitamers play critical roles in a variety of enzymatic complexes and can promote and maintain metabolism. Currently, the presence and role of these vitamers in the malting and brewing industry have not been widely explored. This research investigated the effects of various fermentation conditions that may lead to the variations in the vitamin content in beer observed by previous researchers. The present research found that during fermentation, the thiamine content of wort is quickly utilized within the first 6 h of a standard fermentation and the uptake of this vitamin is not affected by increases in wort gravity. While no significant changes were observed in extracellular phosphorylated vitamers of thiamine, both free thiamine and thiamine diphosphate accumulated intracellularly during the wort fermentation. Meanwhile extracellular riboflavin vitamers were only poorly utilized during beer fermentations, however flavin mononucleotide rapidly accumulated intracellularly and more so under aerobic conditions. When yeast was exposed to an all‐malt high‐gravity wort, the thiamine or riboflavin utilization was not affected. However, thiamine utilization was reduced in adjunct‐driven high‐gravity worts. Notwithstanding the lowered thiamine uptake under high‐gravity conditions; there were some minor improvements in fermentation performance and yeast viability. High pressure processing (HPP) reduces the glycolytic activity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and provides a means to control further production of acidic metabolites in fermented dairy products during storage. However, there is limited information on the effects of HPP on specific enzymes of dairy starter bacteria responsible for the metabolism of lactose. The aim of this study was to determine pressure-induced inactivation of glycolytic enzymes in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis C10, Streptococcus thermophilus TS1 and Lactobacillus acidophilus 2400. Cultures were grown for 16 h in M17 or MRS broth containing 5% (w/v) lactose at pH 6.5 (maintained by addition of 10 M NaOH). The cells were harvested by centrifugation, washed and resuspended in 100 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6.5) and pressure-treated at 300 and 600 MPa (≤ 22 °C, 5 min). The ability of pressure-treated resting cells of Lactococcus, incubated with 5% (w/v) lactose at 30 °C, to ferment lactose was evaluated by determining titratable acidity (TA) during incubation. The activities of phospho-β-galactosidase (P-β-gal), β-galactosidase (β-gal) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were determined in cell-free extracts of untreated and pressure-treated cells. Resting cells of Lactococcus treated at 600 MPa had a substantially lower rate of acidification than the controls and those treated at 300 MPa. Both P-β-gal and β-gal were significantly inactivated (p < 0.01) in the starter cultures treated at 300 or 600 MPa. The LDH in Lactococcus and Lactobacillus was highly resistant to pressure treatment at 300 MPa. In contrast, the LDH in Streptococcus was almost completely inactivated at ≥ 300 MPa.Industrial relevanceContinuing production of acidic metabolites in fermented dairy products during storage can be a technological challenge that adversely affects product quality. The current study demonstrates that high pressure processing (HPP) offers the potential of controlling this problem by inactivation of glycolytic enzymes in various mesophilic and thermophilic starter cultures. The findings of this research will assist in establishing optimised operating parameters for HPP treatment of cultured products to extend shelf-life, by reducing acid production during storage.  相似文献

Penicillium expansum is the most important cause of blue mould rot, a major post-harvest disease of apples worldwide. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the inoculum size on the germination and growth parameters of P. expansum under different storage conditions in apples. Growth of P. expansum was observed in more than 90% of the inoculations, when the inoculum was equal or higher than 2x10(4) spores. The use of a low inoculum level resulted in longer lag phases and a larger variability of the estimated lag phase. This indicates that more replications are necessary to estimate the lag phase of the mould in the specified circumstances. At lower temperature, more inoculum was necessary to reduce the variability of the estimated lag phase, showing that this effect is temperature dependent. Moreover, the effect of the inoculum level on the lag phase is even more pronounced for a slower growing strain. These results imply that the inoculum size influences the estimated growth parameters and should be considered in quantitative risk assessments and for the design of challenge tests and experiments to gather data for predictive growth models.  相似文献

Environmental ranking of refrigerants is of need in many instances. The aim is to assess the relative environmental hazard posed by 40 refrigerants, including those used in the past, those presently used, and some proposed substitutes. Ranking is based upon ozone depletion potential, global warming potential, and atmospheric lifetime and is achieved by applying the Hasse diagram technique, a mathematical method that allows us to assess order relationships of chemicals. The refrigerants are divided into 13 classes, of which the chlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluoroethers, and hydrocarbons contain the largest number of single substances. The dominance degree, a method for measuring order relationships among classes, is discussed and applied to the 13 refrigerant classes. The results show that some hydrofluoroethers are as problematic as the hydrofluorocarbons. Hydrocarbons and ammonia are the least problematic refrigerants with respect to the three environmental properties.  相似文献
