This paper presents some of the theoretical predictions and experimental results for the steady-state characteristics of a gas-lubricated, pivoted-pad journal bearing of finite length. An analytical expression for the prediction of load-carrying capacity for these bearings is developed from numerical computer solutions. Sample calculations are presented to show how the theoretical data may be utilized in the design of an actual pivoted-pad bearing. Improvements over previous approximate theories are discussed.  相似文献

Influence of rib spacing in proton-exchange membrane electrode assemblies   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A two-dimensional design analysis of a membrane-electrode assembly for a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell is presented. Specifically, the ribs of the bipolar plates restrict the access of fuel and oxidant gases to the catalyst layer. The expected change in cell performance that results from the partial blocking of the substrate layer is studied by numerical simulation of the oxygen electrode and the membrane separator. The effects of rib sizing and the thickness of the gas-diffusion electrode on the current and water distributions within the cell are presented. For all of the cases considered, the two-dimensional effect only slightly alters the half-cell potential for a given applied current but has a significant influence on water management. Concentrated solution theory with variable transport properties is used in the membrane electrolyte to solve for the electrical potential and local water content. The Stefan-Maxwell equations are used in the gas-diffusion electrode to determine the local mole fractions of nitrogen, oxygen and water vapour. A control-volume formulation is used for the resolution of the coupled nonlinear differential equations. One advantage of the control-volume approach over finite-difference methods is the relative ease in which internal boundary points in fuel-cell and battery models are handled. Somatostatin has been suggested to influence the somatotrophic axis outside the central nervous system, in reducing GH-induced IGF-I mRNA and IGF-I generation. This study aimed to determine whether such effects were mediated via the GH receptor (GHR). GH-deficient dwarf rats aged 45-47 days (n = 8 per group) received twice daily subcutaneous injections of octreotide (1 mg/kg) (group O), saline (group S), octreotide (1 mg/kg) plus bovine GH (0.25 mg/kg) (group OG), or bovine GH (0.25 mg/kg) plus saline (group G) for 10 days. Octreotide-treated animals had less weight gain compared with saline-treated animals, but not when GH cotreated (group OG vs G). Octreotide had an overall effect on decreasing length gain (P < 0.01). Serum IGF-I (ng/ml) was reduced by octreotide (group O 171 +/- 11, group S 239 +/- 20, P < 0.01; group OG 283 +/- 30, group G 362 +/- 10, P < 0.001), as was serum insulin (P < 0.001). A significant decrease in hepatic and muscle IGF-I mRNA expression was found as expected, yet this was not associated with decreased hepatic GHR expression. Rather, an increase in hepatic 125I-bovine GH specific binding was observed (P < 0.001) and, in GH-cotreated animals (OG), hepatic GHR and GH binding protein (GHBP) mRNA expression were also increased by octreotide by approximately 40%. In muscle, octreotide was associated with an approximately 30% decrease in GHBP mRNA and no effect on GHR mRNA. This study suggests that the suppressive effects of octreotide on IGF-I metabolism, at least in liver, are not mediated via down-regulation of GHR expression, but more likely by direct effects on IGF-I expression.  相似文献

This paper presents an interactive graphics system called L.E.G.O. The purpose of L.E.G.O. is to model two- and three-dimensional objects using Euclidean geometry constructions. L.E.G.O. has a layered structure which makes it convenient to use, both for the experienced programmer and the novice. The programs may be written in a compiled language (C), written interactively in an interpreted language (LISP) or developed using a graphical interface in a multiple-window environment. Applications of L.E.G.O. include computer-assisted instruction of geometry and computer graphics, geometric modeling, and kinematic analysis. The use of imperative constructions and the powerful interface based on the idea of graphical programming are the most distinctive features of the system.  相似文献

Cultured neonatal rat ventricular myocytes were co-transfected with expression plasmids encoding protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms from each of the PKC subfamilies (classical PKC-alpha, novel PKC-epsilon or atypical PKC-zeta) together with an atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) reporter plasmid. Each PKC had been rendered constitutively active by a single Ala-->Glu mutation or a small deletion in the inhibitory pseudosubstrate site. cPKC-alpha, nPKC-epsilon or aPKC-zeta expression plasmids each stimulated ANF-promoter activity and expression of a reporter gene under the control of a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate-response element (TRE). Upregulation of the ANF promoter is characteristic of the hypertrophic response in the heart ventricle and a TRE is present in the ANF promoter. Thus all subfamilies of PKC may have the potential to contribute to hypertrophic response in cardiomyocytes.  相似文献

X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the P K‐edge was used to monitor ZDDP antiwear film thickness with rubbing time. Thermal immersion films of varying thickness were generated from the ZDDP and analysed using XANES spectroscopy and the particle induced X‐ray emission (PIXE) technique. P K‐edge XANES edge jumps and (1s → np) peak heights of the spectra were plotted against PIXE mass thickness values in order to establish calibration curves. Antiwear films were analysed using XANES spectroscopy, and average mass thicknesses were extrapolated from the calibration curves. A set of antiwear films formed in the presence of ZDDP and then further rubbed in base oil (no ZDDP) showed no significant decrease in film thickness. A set of antiwear films rubbed in the presence of ZDDP for various lengths of time showed an increase in film thickness, followed by thinning of the film. The decrease in film thickness is believed to be due to wear caused by the ZDDP solution decomposition products acting as an abrasive in the contact region. Capillary gel electrophoresis is demonstrated for the four-spectral-channel sequencing technique of Smith, the two-spectral-channel sequencing technique of Prober, and the one-spectral-channel sequencing technique of Richardson and Tabor. Sequencing rates up to 1000 bases/h are obtained at electric field strengths of 465 V/cm. At lower electric field strengths, capillary electrophoresis produces useful data for fragments greater than 550 nucleotides in length with 2 times better resolution than slab gel electrophoresis. An on-column detector produces detection limits of 200 zmol (1 zmol = 10(-21) mol = 600 molecules) for the four-spectral-channel technique. A postcolumn detector, based on the sheath flow cuvette, produces detection limits of 20 and 2 zmol for the two- and one-spectral-channel techniques, respectively.  相似文献
