Biomagnetic neurosensors. 2. Magnetically stimulated sensors

We report the generation of action potentials in crayfish neurons by magnetic pulses for analytical purposes. A copper wire toroid, containing a ferrite core, was placed around the nerve bundle, and square wave current pulses were sent through the wire to generate a magnetic field. The magnetic field generated an action potential in the neuron that was detected downfield by a pickup microelectrode. The biosensor was used to detect local anesthetics by monitoring the time necessary for complete blockage of the action potential. Techniques for improving the efficiency and lifetimes of neural biosensors are discussed.     

A primary care nurse clinic

A nurse-driven clinic that uses a client-centered approach evolved from an independent ambulatory care program. The clinic operates 4 to 5 hours per day and provides patient counseling, health care maintenance, primary care, patient education, and therapeutic care.     

Molecular interaction between the Fyn-associated protein SKAP55 and the SLP-76-associated phosphoprotein SLAP-130

It has previously been reported that in resting T-lymphocytes the protein tyrosine kinase p59 constitutively co-precipitates with four phosphoproteins of 43, 55, 85, and 120 kDa, respectively. We have recently cloned the 55-kDa protein that was termed Src kinase-associated phosphoprotein of 55 kDa (SKAP55). Here we demonstrate that the recently characterized SH2-domain-containing leukocyte protein 76-associated phosphoprotein of 130 kDa (SLAP-130) is one of the components of the Fyn complex and that it also co-precipitates with SKAP55 in human T-cells. We establish that SKAP55 and SLAP-130 associate with each other when both molecules are co-expressed in COS cells. By co-transfection of truncated mutants of SKAP55 and SLAP-130 as well as by using the two-hybrid selection system, we further demonstrate that the association between SLAP-130 and SKAP55 is direct and involves the Src homology 3 domain of SKAP55 and the proline-rich sequence of SLAP-130.     

Rapid, sensitive procedure to determine buspirone levels in rat brains using gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection

Reported here is a rapid, sensitive and relatively inexpensive procedure using gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection (GC-NPD) to quantify buspirone levels in brains of rats. The analyte was directly extracted from brain homogenate with toluene after basification and then subjected to GC-NPD analysis using a capillary column. The calibration curves were linear over the range of 10 to 320 ng per 2 ml of brain homogenate, with typical r2 values >0.99. The assay was highly reproducible and gave peaks with excellent chromatographic properties.     

Comparison of PCR and pp65 antigenemia assay with quantitative shell vial culture for detection of cytomegalovirus in blood leukocytes from solid-organ transplant recipients

This study compared PCR and an assay for cytomegalovirus (CMV) pp65 antigenemia (CMV-vue; INCSTAR Corp.) with a quantitative shell vial culture (QSVC) technique for the detection of CMV in serial blood specimens from 46 solid-organ transplant recipients. In a comparison based on 535 specimens tested by PCR and QSVC, CMV was detected by PCR in 41 and by QSVC in 37 of 43 recipients at risk of CMV infection. The mean number of days after transplantation of initial detection of CMV was 29.9 for PCR and 34.0 for QSVC (P = 0.01). The antigenemia assay was performed on 395 specimens, including 304 of those also tested by PCR. In these specimens, CMV was detected by the antigenemia assay, QSVC, and PCR in 30, 32, and 35 (respectively) of 38 patients at risk, with no statistically significant difference in the time to detection. Each of the assays detected CMV in similar proportions of patients with and without clinically significant CMV infection. PCR stayed positive longer after transplantation than the other assays but frequently returned to negative when more than 6 months had elapsed after transplantation. The antigenemia assay and PCR stayed positive longer after institution of antiviral therapy than QSVC. PCR can provide highly sensitive detection of CMV viremia, but a PCR assay for CMV is not yet available in kit form. The pp65 antigenemia assay and shell vial culture are quantifiable and comparable in sensitivity. Either is recommended for rapid detection of CMV in blood specimens from solid-organ transplant recipients.     

Determination of the in situ forces and force distribution within the human anterior cruciate ligament

The in situ forces and their distribution within the human anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can clarify this ligament's role in the knee and help to resolve controversies regarding surgical treatment of ACL deficiency. We used a universal force-moment sensor (UFS) to determine the magnitude, direction, and point of application of the in situ forces in the ACL in intact human cadaveric knees. Unlike previous studies, this approach does not require surgical intervention, the attachment of mechanical devices to or near the ACL, or a priori assumptions about the direction of in situ force. Anterior tibial loads were applied to intact knees, which were limited to 1 degree of freedom at 30 degrees flexion. The in situ forces developed in the ACL were lower than the applied force for loads under 80 N, but larger for applied loads of more than 80 N. The direction of the force vector corresponded to that of the anteromedial (AM) portion of the ACL insertion on the tibial plateau. The point of force application was located in the posterior section of the anteromedial portion of the tibial insertion site. The anterior and posterior aspects of the anteromedial portion of the ACL supported 25% and 70% of the in situ force, respectively, with the remainder carried by the posterolateral portion. We believe that the data obtained with this new UFS methodology improves our understanding of the role of the ACL in knee function, and that this methodology can be easily extended to study the function of other ligaments.

In this paper,we address the need for better hands-on learning materials in computing education and the need for integrating mobile computing education into computing curricular.We propose an innovative learning approach that uses state-of-the-art mobile computing technologies and devices to design a highly accessible and real-world relevant hands-on labware for computing education.The labware employs a modular design such that the learning materials can both be combined together into a single course of mobile program development and be integrated into the related computing courses as building blocks.The labware will help students understand the concepts,improve their problem solving skills,and prepare them for the mobile computing industrial workforce.The pilot modules of the labware have been presented to undergraduate students and have received positive feedbacks.     

Accelerated ageing of cement sheets containing polypropylene networks

Oven ageing experiments are described which have been used to accelerate the thermal oxidation of networks made of polypropylene films when embedded in cement mortar. The composite is intended to be used in approximately 6 mm thick sheets as an alternative to asbestos cement, the required in-service lifetime for which may be more than 30 years. The accelerated ageing data were obtained from direct tensile tests on the composite, the predictive criteria being strength of the film and strain to failure of the composite. It is shown that 0.25% of commercial antioxidants by weight of the film should give resistance to degradation of the films for well in excess of the required lifetimes when contained in the composite. The performance of the networks with these antioxidants at the lowest test temperature of 80 C is so good that the tests at this temperature will probably take more than five years to complete, and therefore the data presented mostly relate to temperatures between 100 and 140 C.
