Quantitative assessment of pneumoencephalograms

In planimetric analysis of pneumoencephalograms the state of the brain ventricles can be assessed on the basis of planimetric coefficients--ratio of the sizes of individual parts of the ventricles and the width of the cerebral skull. Each of the calculated coefficients reflects the state of an individual portion of the ventricles. A summated coefficient Q is introduced which calculation permits to compose a digital characteristics of the state of the lateral ventricles as a whole. The ratio of the transverse size of the skull to the width of the III ventricle was also calculated, which reflects more objectively the state of the ventricle than the measurement of its absolute width value. The normal values of the coefficients were calculated on pneumoencephalograms with unchanged brain ventricles. In various degrees of ventricular dilatation the coefficients were determined on the pneumoencephalograms with a pathologically altered ventricular system.     

Study of the sensitivity of different strians of the influenza A2 virus of rimantadine

The sensitivity of different influenza A2 (H3N2) virus strains to rimantadine in ovo was studied. The reference strains of influenza virus A/Hong Kong/1/68, A/England/42/72, A/Scotland/840/74 as well as new epidemic strains isolated in the USSR and Mongolia in 1974-1975 antigenically related to influenza A/Port Chalmers/1/73 virus were found to be sensitive to rimantadine.     

Absorption and distribution studies on chlorinated oleic acid and extracts of chlorinated lipid and protein fractions of flour in rats

Fourty-five reconstructions of the profunda femoris artery were performed in 41 patients during the period from 1972 to 1974. 78% were operated upon for pain at rest or distal gangrene. Three patients died postoperatively and in 5 cases the reconstruction failed to save the limb. In 1 additional case the operation probably lowered the amputation level to below knee. There was only 1 late occlusion. In the present material profundaplasty alone or combined with iliac reconstruction could relieve rest pain and save limbs when no other possibilities except amputation existed. However, when significant obstruction of the profounda femoris artery is demonsrated by angiography, profundaplasty should probably be perferred to femoro-popliteal reconstruction in most cases since it represents a minor operation with encouraging long-term results. Lateral angiograms of the deep femoral artery should supplement conventional angiography or lower limb atherosclerosis.     

Functional features of the locomotor muscles of the locust

The ultrastructure of muscle fibres, membrane electrical constants and synaptic membrane responses to microapplication of l-glutamate were investigated in longitudinal flight muscle and flexor tibia of Locusta migratoria migratorioides. The sarcomers of the flight muscle (fast) were smaller then those of the leg muscle (slow). The effective resistances (Ro) of the flight and leg muscles were (2.25 +/- 0.54)-10(5) omega and (1.65 +/- 0.57) X 10(5) omega. The specific resistance (Rm), space constant (tau) and time constant (lambda) in the same muscles were 774 +/- 106 omega-cm and 2583 +/- 119 omega-cm-2; 7.3 +/- 1.7 ms and 17.5 +/- 1.1 ms; 093 +/- 0.22 mm and 1.98 +/- 0.42 mm. When l-glutamate was applied iontophoretically to muscle fibres depolarization was recorded only in localized parts of the membrane. Microapplication of acetylcholine to intact and denervated muscle fibres of the slow leg muscle was uneffective. It is suggested that l-glutamic acid is the excitatory transmitter both in slow and fast insect muscles.     

The artificial heart. Progress and promise

A multidisciplinary group has designed, fabricated, and evaluated an artificial heart. The heart consists of two smooth-surfaced sac-type pumps, two pneumatic power units, and an electronic control system. The artificial heart has been employed in 22 calves. A variety of problems have been encountered and overcome and a significant improvement in pump design has been made. As a result, a gradual increase in survival times has occurred. The last two calves in which the heart was tested lived for 60 and 42 days respectively. These animals ate well and gained weight. The ability of the control system to balance the output of the two pumps over long periods of time and to automatically increase cardiac output with treadmill exercise has been confirmed. No insurmountable problems in the development of the artificial heart have been identified. The date that an artificial heart will be available for clinical use depends on the availability of funds and on the tenacity of the investigators.     

Squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate

Thirty-eight patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate treated between 1960 and 1975 were reviewed. Males in the seventh decade predominated. All symptomatic patients complained of sore throat and/or odynophagia. Seventy-eight percent were symptomatic less than three months. Approximately equal numbers of patients presented with T1, T2, and T3 tumors. Twenty-seven percent had cervical metastases when initially seen. The majority (89%) of patients were treated with radiation initially and the remainder (11%) received radiation therapy at the time of postsurgical recurrence with an absolute five year survival of 33%. Patients less than 60 years of age and those with small primary tumors and no neck metastases demonstrated better survival. Radiation therapy to the primary tumor and neck appears to be the preferred modality of initial treatment.     

Catamnestic studies on the prodomal phase of myocardial infarct

In a retrospective study by means of a half-standardized method of interview in 154 patients with acute myocardial infarction and in a control group of the same age (n = 100) anamnestic data were established, particularly taking into consideration the preinfarction phase. 27% of the patients were surprised by an acute myocardial infarction without prodromal symptoms, in 32% the first occurrence of complaints of angina pectoris was during the last two months before the infarction. 41% had a preexisting angina pectoris which usually showed a crescendo-course with increasing approximation to the infarction. More than half of the patients reported on physical activity or/and emotional stress as causal factors of the preinfarction complaints. The correlation with the localisation of the infarction showed above all an occurrence of the prodromal symptoms in infarctions of the anterior wall and in lesions of the myocardium which in most cases could be ascertained only enzymatically. A greater accumulation of the prodromi was furthermore found in younger patients, in hypertension and preexisting restriction of the heart function. 70% of the patients with warning symptoms consulted a physician because of their heart complaints. In the control group 22% of the persons reported on heart complaints.
