Activation of auditory cortex during silent lipreading

Watching a speaker's lips during face-to-face conversation (lipreading) markedly improves speech perception, particularly in noisy conditions. With functional magnetic resonance imaging it was found that these linguistic visual cues are sufficient to activate auditory cortex in normal hearing individuals in the absence of auditory speech sounds. Two further experiments suggest that these auditory cortical areas are not engaged when an individual is viewing nonlinguistic facial movements but appear to be activated by silent meaningless speechlike movements (pseudospeech). This supports psycholinguistic evidence that seen speech influences the perception of heard speech at a prelexical stage.     

An improved photographic process for convergent beam electron diffraction applications

The use of a surface developer, pyrocatechol, to process transmission electron microscope negatives has been shown to have significant advantages over the conventional D-19 process. The process described here is tolerant of a large margin of error in the electron exposure and produces a negative that not only retains details both in the highlight as well as the faint regions, but also preserves local contrast. These characteristics are particularly useful in convergent beam electron diffraction applications where one encounters a wide contrast range. Improved acuteness and an enhanced signal to noise ratio due to the prolonged exposures associated with this process have also been observed.     

Immunoglobulin A levels in southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) milk during the suckling period

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels in milk samples from southern elephant seals at King George Island, Antarctica are reported. IgA levels were determined throughout the suckling period (approximately 23 days). The IgA concentration in southern elephant seal milk was lower than in other mammals and, unlike most mammalian milk, was not high during early lactation. There was not a definite pattern in IgA levels, which fluctuated within narrow limits throughout the suckling period (mean +/- SD, 30.81 +/- 6.38 mg IgA/100 g milk). If IgG was present, its level was too low to be detected by the method used. This is the first evidence in Southern elephant seal of the possibility of transmission of passive immunity after birth involving secretion of IgA in the milk.     

Viscoelastic behavior of flexible slabstock polyurethane foam as a function of temperature and relative humidity. II. Compressive creep behavior

The compression creep behavior was monitored at constant temperature and/or relative humidity for two slabstock foams with different hard-segment content. The tests were performed by applying a constant load (free falling weight) and then monitoring the strain as a function of time over a 3-h time period. A near linear relationship is obtained for linear strain versus log time after a short induction period for both foams and at most conditions studied (except at temperatures near and above 125°C). The slope of this relationship or the initial creep rate is dependent on the initial strain level, espcially in the range of 10–60% deformation. This dependence is believed to be related to the cellular structs buckling within this range of strain. At deformations greater than 60% and less than 10%, the solid portion of the foam is thought to control the compressive creep behavior in contrast to the cellular texture. Increasing relative humidity does cause a greater amount of creep to occur and is believed to be a result of water acting as a plasticizer. For low humidities increasing the temperature from 30 to 85°C, a decrease in the rate of creep is observed at a 65% initial deformation. At 125°C, an increase in the creep rate is seen and is believed to be related to chemical as well as additional structural changes taking place in the solid portion of the foams. The creep rate is higher for the higher hard-segment foam (34 wt %) than that of the lower (21 wt %) at all of the conditions studied and for the same initial deformation level. This difference is principally attributed to the greater amount of hydrogen bonds available for disruption in the higher hard-segment foam. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Economic evaluation of hysteroscopic endometrial ablation versus vaginal hysterectomy for menorrhagia

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy and safety of percutaneous catheter drainage combined with alcohol sclerosis in the treatment of postoperative lymphoceles. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with 14 postoperative symptomatic lymphoceles were treated. Drainage catheters were inserted under ultrasound (n = 13) or computed tomographic (n = 1) guidance. Lymphocele sclerosis was performed by instilling 10-100 mL of absolute alcohol into the lymphocele cavity and aspirating the alcohol after 30 minutes. Sclerosis sessions were carried out one to three times per day, usually three times per week. Catheter sinograms were obtained and prophylactic antibiotics administered. Imaging was repeated if symptoms or signs of recurrence developed. RESULTS: Successful drainage and sclerosis were achieved in all 13 patients. One patient with a recurrence was successfully treated with repeated drainage and alcohol ablation. No adverse effects of alcohol instillation were seen. The mean duration of catheterization was 36 days (range, 17-65 days; median, 30 days). CONCLUSION: Percutaneous drainage combined with alcohol ablation is a safe and effective treatment of postoperative lymphoceles.     

Intensive postremission chemotherapy in adults with acute myeloid leukemia. Cancer and Leukemia Group B

BACKGROUND: About 65 percent of previously untreated adults with primary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) enter complete remission when treated with cytarabine and an anthracycline. However, such responses are rarely durable when conventional postremission therapy is administered. Uncontrolled trials have suggested that intensive postremission therapy may prolong these complete remissions. METHODS: We treated 1088 adults with newly diagnosed AML with three days of daunorubicin and seven days of cytarabine and randomly assigned patients who had a complete remission to receive four courses of cytarabine at one of three doses: 100 mg per square meter of body-surface area per day for five days by continuous infusion, 400 mg per square meter per day for five days by continuous infusion, or 3 g per square meter in a 3-hour infusion every 12 hours (twice daily) on days 1, 3, and 5. All patients then received four courses of monthly maintenance treatment. RESULTS: Of the 693 patients who had a complete remission, 596 were randomly assigned to receive postremission cytarabine. After a median follow-up of 52 months, the disease-free survival rates in the three treatment groups were significantly different (P = 0.003). Relative to the 100-mg group, the hazard ratios were 0.67 for the 3-g group (95 percent confidence interval, 0.53 to 0.86) and 0.75 for the 400-mg group (95 percent confidence interval, 0.60 to 0.94). The probability of remaining in continuous complete remission after four years for patients 60 years of age or younger was 24 percent in the 100-mg group, 29 percent in the 400-mg group, and 44 percent in the 3-g group (P = 0.002). In contrast, for patients older than 60, the probability of remaining disease-free after four years was 16 percent or less in each of the three postremission cytarabine groups. CONCLUSIONS: These data support the concept of a dose-response effect for cytarabine in patients with AML who are 60 years of age or younger. The results with the high-dose schedule in this age group are comparable to those reported in similar patients who have undergone allogeneic bone marrow transplantation during a first remission.     

The effect of unilateral destruction of the head of the caudate nucleus with kainic acid on the structure of the wakefulness-sleep cycle and the EEG in rats

The wakefulness-sleep cycle characteristics changes in Wistar line rats after unilateral lesions of the neuronal elements of the caudate nucleus head with kainic acid (at sparing the conducting ways going through this structure) were studied. It was shown that in 4 days after acid injection the share of the active wakefulness and light slow-wave sleep is significantly increased, whereas the percentage of the passive wakefulness, deep slow-wave stage, and paradoxal sleep (up to 80%) is reduced. The wakefulness-sleep cycle in rats is completely normalized on the 7th day after injection. The obtained data allow to consider the caudate nucleus as a modulator for wakefulness-sleep cycle, that is the structure involved in the motive activity regulation.
