Urinary creatinine excretion and lean body mass   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In a group of 34 adult and child subjects a high correlation (r = 0.988) was found between lean body mass, as determined by potassium-40 counting, and urinary creatinine excretion. The effect of technical errors was reduced by averaging the results of two or three 40K assays on each subject, and by making consecutive 3-day collections of urine. It appears that one can make a reasonable estimate of lean body mass from urinary creatinine excretion.  相似文献

Thiamine and thiamine triphosphate (TTP) values were assayed in various brain regions in 11 controls and 13 patients with subacute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy (SNE, Leigh disease). The TTP values of normal brain were 5% of the total thiamine value. The relative TTP (or % TTP) level was consistently low in the pons, midbrain, and cerebellum of all the SNE brains. Twenty-five percent of the SNE brains had normal TTP levels in the frontal region. The TTP values correlated with the degrees of pathologic involvement in all sampled regions of the brain except the cerebellum. The concentration of thiamine in the mammillary bodies exceeded its concentration elsewhere in both control and SNE brains. The finding of low TTP levels in morphologically abnormal regions supports the hypothesis that TTP deficiency is etiologically related to SNE.  相似文献

The effects of phosphatidyl serine (PS) on 45Ca distribution, 45Ca movements and contractions were examined in rabbit aortic smooth muscle. Contractile responses to submaximal concentrations of norepinephrine and histamine were potentiated by prior exposure to PS, but equivalent responses to potassium were unaffected. Addition of PS to the incubation solution decreased 45Ca uptake; exposure of aortic strips to PS during washout of either 45Ca or promethium (147Pm) resulted in maintained increases in efflux. These PS-induced alterations in net loss of 45Ca or 147Pm can be attributed to a decreased membrane reuptake and/or rebinding. However, the presence of PS during the washout significantly reduced the increases in 45Ca efflux rate elicited with either 0.05 mM concentrations of Ca++ or ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. Thus, in rabbit aortic smooth muscle, exogenous PS can alter the availability and/or exchangeability of a membrane-bound Ca++ fraction. By specifically increasing the affinity for Ca++ at relevant membrane sites or stores. PS may enhance the ability of vascular smooth muscle to respond to stimulatory agents that mobilize Ca++ from these sites and, in this manner, potentiate contractile responses.  相似文献

Plasma fractions and plasma dialysate from 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene- and tuberculin-sensitive guinea pigs that had been treated with either antilymphocytic serum or normal control serum were analyzed for their ability to transfer lymphocyte transformation, passive cutaneous anaphylaxis, and macrophage migration inhibition, as well as delayed hypersensitivity in vivo. Antilymphocytic serum caused rapid release of material, which has characteristics of transfer factor, into the plasma. It was dialyzable, migrated electrophoretically with the alpha globulins and albumin, possessed a 280/260 (nm) optical density ratio of 0.7, and caused in vitro lymphocyte transformation in the presence of the specific antigen. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis antibodies were also present in the plasma of sensitive animals, but they were isolated in electrophoretic or dialysis fractions separate from those containing transfer activity.  相似文献

A microplate-microtubule array was observed in Anabaena sp. (B-378). This structure consists of an arched plate, about 8 nm thick, and various microtubules, 12 nm in diameter and 50 nm long, arranged in rows. The microtubules project at right angles from one side of the plate into the cytoplasm or towards the plasma membrane. Up to twelve microplate-microtubule arrays were observed in a single section of a cell. Microfilaments, about 2.8 nm in diameter and of undetermined length, were observed in four isolates of Anabaena. The microfilaments were always found in bundles, nwhich varied in size, up to 0.63 mum across and 0.91 mum long. Microtubules, 10 nm in diameter and about 150 nm in length, were observed associated with one facet of polyhedral bodies in 8 out of 20 isolates of Anabaena. The microtubules occurred in groups of up to 20 or more, and were always oriented with the long axis parallel to the facet of a polyhedral body. In cross section, the microtubules had an electron transparent lumen 5 nm wide and a wall 2.5 nm thick. These structures are compared to previously described microtubules and microfilaments.  相似文献

To simulate the effects of digestion and metabolism on the survival of different polyphenolic compounds, extracts of blueberry and apple were deglycosylated by acid hydrolysis, followed by enzymic glucuronidation under neutral conditions, yielding approximately 5% overall recovery of polyphenolics. The major polyphenolics before and after the treatment were compared, to estimate which species are likely to be present in the intestinal lumen, undegraded and available for absorption, after consumption of the fruit. Whereas blueberry extract consisted predominantly of anthocyanins, epicatechin and caffeoyl quinate esters, the major components of the treated extract were quercetin glucuronides and (unglucuronidated) caffeoyl quinates, with only traces of anthocyanidin derivatives. In apple extract, compositional changes were less marked, but caffeoyl quinates, procyanidins and quercetin were enriched at the expense of caffeic acid, epicatechin and catechin. Hydrophobic compounds like phloretin and quercetin were extensively glucuronidated, whereas caffeic acid and caffeoyl quinate were not. These results suggest that the major polyphenolic components of a fruit are not necessarily the most important contributors to any health benefits because the polyphenolic composition in the intestinal lumen and consequently, in the circulation, may be considerably different.  相似文献

The historical use of enzymes for food processing is briefly reviewed. The manufacturing process of microbial food enzymes is described including the fundamental purity criteria recommended by Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and Food Chemicals Codex. Principles for safety evaluation focus on the possible presence of toxic contaminants in the commercial enzyme preparation. Possible sources of any undesirable contaminants include the raw materials used, the properties of the production strain, contamination with foreign micro‐organisms, use of additives and processing aids in recovery of the enzyme. Systems for design of toxicology programmes are reviewed. A case study is given summarizing the safety evaluation of an immobilized lipase used for the interesterification of fats and oils. Based upon a no‐effect level derived from in vitro and animal feeding studies it is concluded that the enzyme is safe for the intended use.

The safety of the enzyme part of the immobilized preparation is documented by a thorough toxicology programme. The safety of the carrier, a phenol formaldehyde based ion‐exchange resin, is documented by leakage analysis of extractable materials under forced conditions, as well as by a feeding study employing a fat treated with the immobilized enzyme.  相似文献
