Sudden incapacitation: USAF experience, 1970-80

During the period 1970-80, there were reported 146 cases of in-flight sudden incapacitation in the USAF. Of these, 62 involved pilots, 14 were navigators, and 70 were student pilots. The etiologies of sudden incapacitation included illness without loss of consciousness, loss of consciousness, spatial disorientation, and improper M-1 maneuver. Each of these categories is analyzed with emphasis upon prevention, for example, not flying with symptomatic preexisting disease, continued emphasis upon spatial disorientation training, and correct performance of the M-1 maneuver. Based upon the data, conclusions and recommendations are suggested to minimize the risk of episodes of in-flight sudden incapacitation.     

Miniaturized electrochemical flow cells

Several novel types of miniaturized electrochemical flow cells are described. The flow cells are fabricated in fluorinated ethylene propylene using a novel technique where channels with inner diameters down to 13 microm are integrated with electrodes. The channel is formed by shrinking and simultaneous melting of a heat shrink/melt tubing around a channel template (a tungsten wire) and electrodes followed by removal of the channel template. The technique allows incorporation of different electrode materials of different sizes. The electrode configuration consists of one or two working electrodes inside the channel and a counter electrode located in the channel outlet reservoir. Electrode configurations with different channel and working electrode sizes, different electrode materials including carbon fibers, glassy carbon rods, poly(tetrafluoroethylene)/carbon composite material, and platinum wires, and different arrangements have been assembled. Hydrodynamic voltammograms in dual-electrode (generator-collector) experiments indicate good potential control for cells with 25-microm channels, while there is some iR drop in cells with 13-microm channels. Cells prepared with a cylindrical working electrode tangent and perpendicular to a flow channel show a flow rate dependence consistent with thin-layer cell behavior. Electrode areas can be made in the range of 10(-10)-10(-8) m2.     

G2 Tensor Product Splines over Extraordinary Vertices

We present a second order smooth filling of an n‐valent Catmull‐Clark spline ring with n biseptic patches. While an underdetermined biseptic solution to this problem has appeared previously, we make several advances in this paper. Most notably, we cast the problem as a constrained minimization and introduce a novel quadratic energy functional whose absolute minimum of zero is achieved for bicubic polynomials. This means that for the regular 4‐valent case, we reproduce the bicubic B‐splines. In other cases, the resulting surfaces are aesthetically well behaved. We extend our constrained minimization framework to handle the case of input mesh with boundary.

Stable and metastable phase equilibria in the Al-Mn system

The aim of the present investigation was resolution of certain obscure features of the Al-Mn phase diagram. The experimental approach was guided by assessment of the previous literature and modeling of the thermodynamics of the system. It has been shown that two phases of approximate stoichiometry “Al₄Mn” (λ and μ) are present in stable equilibrium, λ forming by a peritectoid reaction at 693 ± 2 °C. The liquidus and stable equilibrium invariant reactions as proposed by Goedecke and Koester have been verified. A map has been made of the successive nonequilibrium phase transformations of as-splat-quenched alloys. Finally, the thermodynamic calculation of the phase diagram allows interpretation of complex reaction sequences during cooling in terms of a catalogue of all the metastable invariant reactions involving (Al), Al₆Mn, λ, μ, ϕ, and Al₁₁Mn₄ phases.     

Identification of beta-L-gulose as the sugar moiety of the main polar lipid Thermoplasma acidophilum

We studied the antibody binding capacity (ABC) of various cell-surface antigens in normal human fetuses and term neonates on lymphocyte, monocyte, and polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells by quantitative flow cytometry also designated by quantimetry. Analysis of changes of expression level on these leukocytes during the developmental process was also investigated. The results indicated that the ABC values of most studied markers change during the maturational process. The ABC of lymphocyte-associated antigens studied such as CD5 and CD7 showed only a decrease from fetus to adult, whereas according to the type of molecule on monocyte and PMN there was either an increase or a decrease of ABC values dependent on the stage of the developmental process, from fetus to neonate or from neonate to adult. However, the ABC values of leukocyte membrane antigens such as CD16, CD46, and CD55 on all leukocytes and CD11b, CD11c, and CD35 on myeloid cells did not change. Their expression level was already mature in fetuses compared with adult cells. In addition, in this quantimetric approach, the analysis of the results for CD11a and CD8 suggested that the changes of CD11a expression level on lymphocyte subsets can depend on one mechanism, whereas there are probably at least two for CD8. Furthermore, the expression patterns of CD5, CD7, and CD11a change during maturation. We concluded that, even if the neonate response pattern to immunological challenge differs from an adult and this is based primarily on the relative numbers and functional activity of lymphocyte T subsets (especially TH1/TH2) and their cytokine profiles, these quantitative and qualitative phenotypical differences might also contribute to explain the functional peculiarities of leukocyte fetal and cord blood cells. All these findings support the notion of immaturity and maturity of ABC expression.     

High-fidelity lightwave transmission of multiple AM-VSB NTSCsignals

The progress towards developing AM lightwave links for the transmission of multiple TV signals is reported. While the signal-quality objectives and transmission distances are appropriate for CATV trunking, the technology is expected to have applicability to the distribution of video signals in the subscriber loop. Highly linear 1.3-μm distributed feedback (DFB) lasers designed expressly for analog requirements are used to transmit 42 continuous wave carriers according to the standard US CATV frequency plan. For the best lasers, when evaluated over 12 km of fiber, carrier to noise was >52 dB, composite second-order distortion was >70 dBc, and composite triple beat was >70 dBc. The relationship between measurements with continuous wave carriers and actual video signals is discussed. System design rules are offered. Properties that lead to superior analog performance are discussed. Data from 700 links indicate that composite third-order distortion generally scales with product count but that composite second-order distortion has a significant frequency-dependent component
