Gilbert's jaundice. Current clinico-nosographical, physiopathological and therapeutic aspects. Note II. The phenomenon of enzyme induction at the level of the liver

After a brief survey of the various modifications that may be encountered by drugs through the work of systems that detoxify the liver cell, attention is given to the problem of enzymic induction. The latter is the result of derepression of a gene that codes for a given enzyme; at the molecular level, derepression takes place when the substrate, by changing the tertiary structure of the repressor, brings about its detachment from DNA: in this way, RNA-polymerase is made capable of synthesising the corresponding mRNA. The inducing activity of phenobarbitone, a drug employed classically in the management of Gilbertian forms, must be substantially attributed to an increase in the synthesis of microsomial proteins, as shown by studies with labelled amino acids.

Isolation of a nonicosa-peptide from cheddar cheese

Summary A nonicosa-peptide was isolated from young Cheddar cheese via dialysis, ethanol precipitation, gel chromatography and ion exchange chromatography. Its amino acid composition is given.

     

Left endoatrial myxoma. Notes on a case

A case of left endoatrial mixoma, ecocardiographically discovered and successfully operated, is reported. The usefulness of ecocardiography, especially to discover intracardiac masses, is considered.     

South Carolina's village system

The authors describe the architectural, design, and mental health treatment concepts underlying the village system, a group of regional inpatient mental health facilities planned in South Carolina. One of the villages is currently under construction and is expected to open early in 1977. In design it resembles a residential community with all the elements of a normal small town or neighborhood.     

Psychiatric aspects of chronic organic brain syndrome

In chronic organic brain syndrome, or dementia, the patient generally retreats to simple, familiar situations and resists involvement in others. The symptoms represent both organic deficits due to brain damage and psychologic reactions to the deficits. Some causes are treatable. Because of progressive change in the total behavior of the patient, major rearrangement of life-style is often necessary. The physician should guide both patient and family in this process. Medication may also be helpful.     

The CLEF 2005 Automatic Medical Image Annotation Task

In this paper, the automatic annotation task of the 2005 CLEF cross-language image retrieval campaign (ImageCLEF) is described. This paper focuses on the database used, the task setup, and the plans for further medical image annotation tasks in the context of ImageCLEF. Furthermore, a short summary of the results of 2005 is given. The automatic annotation task was added to ImageCLEF in 2005 and provides the first international evaluation of state-of-the-art methods for completely automatic annotation of medical images based on visual properties. The aim of this task is to explore and promote the use of automatic annotation techniques to allow for extracting semantic information from little-annotated medical images. A database of 10.000 images was established and annotated by experienced physicians resulting in 57 classes, each with at least 10 images. Detailed analysis is done regarding the (i) image representation, (ii) classification method, and (iii) learning method. Based on the strong participation of the 2005 campain, future benchmarks are planned.     

Statistical Translation of Text and Speech: First Results with the RWTH System

In this paper, we describe a first version of a system for statisticaltranslation and present experimental results. The statistical translationapproach uses two types of information: a translation model and a languagemodel. The language model used is a standard bigram model. The translationmodel is decomposed into lexical and alignment models. After presenting the details of the alignment model, we describe the search problem and present a dynamic programming-based solution for the special case of monotone alignments.So far, the system has been tested on two limited-domain tasks for which abilingual corpus is available: the EuTrans traveller task (Spanish–English,500-word vocabulary) and the Verbmobil task (German–English, 3000-wordvocabulary). We present experimental results on these tasks. In addition to the translation of text input, we also address the problem of speech translation and suitable integration of the acoustic recognition process and the translation process.
