We present a simulation and visualization system for a critical application—analysis of the thermal fluid dynamics inside
a pressurized water reactor of a nuclear power plant when cold water is injected into the reactor vessel. We employ a hybrid
thermal lattice Boltzmann method (HTLBM), which has the advantages of ease of parallelization and ease of handling complex
simulation boundaries. For efficient computation and storage of the irregular-shaped simulation domain, we classify the domain
into nonempty and empty cells and apply a novel packing technique to organize the nonempty cells. This method is implemented
on a GPU cluster for acceleration. We demonstrate the formation of cold-water plumes in the reactor vessel. A set of interactive
visualization tools, such as side-view slices, 3D volume rendering, thermal layers rendering, and panorama rendering, are
provided to collectively visualize the structure and dynamics of the temperature field in the vessel. To the best of our knowledge,
this is the first system that combines 3D simulation and visualization for analyzing thermal shock risk in a pressurized water

We present a 3D object-space antialiasing technique for volume graphics. Our approach performs antialiasing once-on a 3D view-independent representation-as part of the modeling stage. The goal of this study was to determine if traffic signals that are synchronized along a route are associated with fewer red-light violations than traffic signals that are not synchronized. A total 3600 cycles of traffic signals at 12 intersections along 2 major urban arteries were observed. Synchronized intersections were effective in reducing the likelihood of red-light running (RLR) by (a) providing fewer opportunities than nonsynchronized intersections for RLR and (b) having a lower rate of RLR relative to the number of opportunities. After adjustment for the number of opportunities, the odds of entering the intersections in red in synchronized intersections were nearly 1/7 the odds of RLR in nonsynchronized intersections. Congestion reduced the effectiveness of synchronized intersections relative to nonsynchronized intersections. Male drivers were slightly more likely to run red lights than female drivers, and the effects of synchronization were fairly constant across age, gender, and the presence or absence of passengers. Actual or potential applications of this research involve signal synchronization to reduce aggressive driving in general and RLR in particular. 相似文献

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor, launched on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Terra satellite at the end of 1999, was designed with 36 spectral channels for a wide array of land, ocean, and atmospheric investigations. MODIS has a unique ability to observe fires, smoke, and burn scars globally. Its main fire detection channels saturate at high brightness temperatures: 500 K at 4 µm and 400 K at 11 µm, which can only be attained in rare circumstances at the 1 km fire detection spatial resolution. Thus, unlike other polar orbiting satellite sensors with similar thermal and spatial resolutions, but much lower saturation temperatures (e.g. Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer and Along Track Scanning Radiometer), MODIS can distinguish between low intensity ground surface fires and high intensity crown forest fires. Smoke column concentration over land is for the first time being derived from the MODIS solar channels, extending from 0.41 µm to 2.1 µm. The smoke product has been provisionally validated both globally and regionally over southern Africa and central and south America. Burn scars are observed from MODIS even in the presence of smoke, using the 1.2 to 2.1 µm channels. MODIS burned area information is used to estimate pyrogenic emissions. A wide range of these fire and related products and validation are demonstrated for the wild fires that occurred in northwestern USA in Summer 2000. The MODIS rapid response system and direct broadcast capability is being developed to enable users to obtain and generate data in near real-time. It is expected that health and land management organizations will use these systems for monitoring the occurrence of fires and the dispersion of smoke within two to six hours after data acquisition. 相似文献

A fourth-order arctic river was experimentally enriched with phosphate (7.7 ± 7.0 μ g 1−1) to determine the effect of such a loading (equivalent to a community of 10,000 people) upon the trophically important biofilm. The effect upon a light-grown biofilm (an autotrophic/heterotrophic assemblage) and a dark-grown biofilm (predominantly heterotrophic assemblage) was determined after 28 days of colonization. Seven attributes of the biofilms were monitored, 2 autotrophic indices, chlorophyll , [14C]HCO3 incorporation into lipids and 5 heterotrophic indices; [14C]acetate incorporation into lipids, metabolic heat output, turn-over times of microbially labile glucose and glutamate and mineralization of microbially recalcitrant ring-labelled [14C]hydroxybenzoic acid. The findings showed that the addition of phosphorus resulted in a substantial stimulation of both autotrophic and heterotrophic processes suggesting that arctic rivers of this type would be liable to cultural eutrophication. 相似文献

We studied the antibody binding capacity (ABC) of various cell-surface antigens in normal human fetuses and term neonates on lymphocyte, monocyte, and polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells by quantitative flow cytometry also designated by quantimetry. Analysis of changes of expression level on these leukocytes during the developmental process was also investigated. The results indicated that the ABC values of most studied markers change during the maturational process. The ABC of lymphocyte-associated antigens studied such as CD5 and CD7 showed only a decrease from fetus to adult, whereas according to the type of molecule on monocyte and PMN there was either an increase or a decrease of ABC values dependent on the stage of the developmental process, from fetus to neonate or from neonate to adult. However, the ABC values of leukocyte membrane antigens such as CD16, CD46, and CD55 on all leukocytes and CD11b, CD11c, and CD35 on myeloid cells did not change. Their expression level was already mature in fetuses compared with adult cells. In addition, in this quantimetric approach, the analysis of the results for CD11a and CD8 suggested that the changes of CD11a expression level on lymphocyte subsets can depend on one mechanism, whereas there are probably at least two for CD8. Furthermore, the expression patterns of CD5, CD7, and CD11a change during maturation. We concluded that, even if the neonate response pattern to immunological challenge differs from an adult and this is based primarily on the relative numbers and functional activity of lymphocyte T subsets (especially TH1/TH2) and their cytokine profiles, these quantitative and qualitative phenotypical differences might also contribute to explain the functional peculiarities of leukocyte fetal and cord blood cells. The effect of biotin binding on streptavidin (STV) structure and stability was studied using differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and fluorescence spectroscopy. Biotin increases the midpoint temperature Tm, of thermally induced denaturation of STV from 75 degrees C in unliganded protein to 112 degrees C at full ligand saturation. The cooperativity of thermally induced unfolding of STV changes substantially in presence of biotin. Unliganded STV monomer has at least one domain that unfolds independently. The dimer bound to biotin undergoes a single coupled denaturation process. Simulations of thermograms of STV denaturation that take into account only the thermodynamic effects of the ligand with a Ka approximately 10(15) reproduce the behavior observed, but the estimated values of Tm are 15-20 degrees C lower than those experimentally determined. This increased stability is attributed to an enhanced cooperativity of the thermal unfolding of STV. The increment in the cooperativity is as consequence of a stronger intersubunit association and an increased structural order upon binding. FT-IR and fluorescence spectroscopy data reveal that unordered structure found in unliganded STV disappears under fully saturating conditions. The data provide a rationale for previous suggestions that biotin binding induces an increase in protein tightness (structural cooperativity) leading, in turn, to a higher thermostability. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the psychometric properties of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime version (K-SADS-PL) interview, which surveys additional disorders not assessed in prior K-SADS, contains improved probes and anchor points, includes diagnosis-specific impairment ratings, generates DSM-III-R and DSM-IV diagnoses, and divides symptoms surveyed into a screening interview and five diagnostic supplements. METHOD: Subjects were 55 psychiatric outpatients and 11 normal controls (aged 7 through 17 years). Both parents and children were used as informants. Concurrent validity of the screen criteria and the K-SADS-PL diagnoses was assessed against standard self-report scales. Interrater (n = 15) and test-retest (n = 20) reliability data were also collected (mean retest interval: 18 days; range: 2 to 36 days). RESULTS: Rating scale data support the concurrent validity of screens and K-SADS-PL diagnoses. Interrater agreement in scoring screens and diagnoses was high (range: 93% to 100%). Test-retest reliability kappa coefficients were in the excellent range for present and/or lifetime diagnoses of major depression, any bipolar, generalized anxiety, conduct, and oppositional defiant disorder (.77 to 1.00) and in the good range for present diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (.63 to .67). CONCLUSION: Results suggest the K-SADS-PL generates reliable and valid child psychiatric diagnoses. 相似文献

The effects of bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) are amplified by lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) and CD14, resulting in cellular activation at very low concentrations of LPS. To investigate the importance of this pathway in acute lung injury, we measured LPS, LBP, and soluble CD14 (sCD14) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) of 82 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). LBP and sCD14 increased markedly in BAL of patients with ARDS. sCD14 and LBP each were strongly related to BAL total protein and polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) concentration, whereas LPS concentration was not. Multivariate analyses showed sCD14 to be strongly related to BAL total protein, even after controlling for LPS and LBP concentrations. sCD14 was strongly and independently related to PMN concentration, after controlling for BAL LPS, LBP, and interleukin-8 (IL-8). The BAL LPS concentration was not strongly related to either BAL total protein or BAL PMN. The BAL sCD14 and LBP values were similar in all subgroups of patients with ARDS, and were not related to survival. The serum LBP and sCD14 were elevated in ARDS, but were not related to BAL total protein, LBP, sCD14, PMN, or clinical outcome. Thus, LBP and sCD14 reach high concentrations in the lungs of patients with ARDS, and BAL sCD14 is strongly related to two major indices of lung inflammation: total protein and PMN concentration. CD14-dependent mechanisms may contribute to lung inflammation in ARDS. 相似文献
