The aim of this study was to investigate the combined influence of diet, menstruation and genetic factors on iron status in Spanish menstruating women (n = 142). Dietary intake was assessed by a 72-h detailed dietary report and menstrual blood loss by a questionnaire, to determine a Menstrual Blood Loss Coefficient (MBLC). Five selected SNPs were genotyped: rs3811647, rs1799852 (Tf gene); rs1375515 (CACNA2D3 gene); and rs1800562 and rs1799945 (HFE gene, mutations C282Y and H63D, respectively). Iron biomarkers were determined and cluster analysis was performed. Differences among clusters in dietary intake, menstrual blood loss parameters and genotype frequencies distribution were studied. A categorical regression was performed to identify factors associated with cluster belonging. Three clusters were identified: women with poor iron status close to developing iron deficiency anemia (Cluster 1, n = 26); women with mild iron deficiency (Cluster 2, n = 59) and women with normal iron status (Cluster 3, n = 57). Three independent factors, red meat consumption, MBLC and mutation C282Y, were included in the model that better explained cluster belonging (R2 = 0.142, p < 0.001). In conclusion, the combination of high red meat consumption, low menstrual blood loss and the HFE C282Y mutation may protect from iron deficiency in women of childbearing age. These findings could be useful to implement adequate strategies to prevent iron deficiency anemia.  相似文献

(S)-;(+)-4-Methyl-3-heptanone is the principal component in the secretion from the mandibular glands of unmated and mated males and females ofAtta sexdens rubropilosa. In mated and unmated females, it is essentially the only component in the glandular secretion. In unmated males up to 50% of the secretion is a mixture of (3S, 4S)- and (3R, 4S)-4-methyl-3-heptanol. The Pd on α-Al2O3 catalysts with Pd particles in the low nanometer range have been prepared by a sonochemical reduction and a colloidal method, respectively. The two catalysts differ in their particle size, the widths of their particle size distributions and the amount of carbon incorporation in the Pd lattice.The adsorptive properties of the Pd/Al2O3 samples are different as a result of the different preparation methods. The methane adsorption capacity of that sample with smaller particles is lower than that of the catalyst with larger particles and the energy of activation is nearly doubled. DRIFTS and TPD results of CO adsorption supported by transmission electron microscopy data indicate that the PdSON catalyst with smaller and more homogeneous particles than PdCOL is highly dispersed which influences the coupling-hydrogenolysis process.The catalytic activity evidenced the formation of different adspecies during methane coupling and chemisorption on both catalysts. During the hydrogenation the carbon adspecies formed mainly methane at low adsorption temperatures. The significant amount of adsorbed methane at 773 K is governed by the highly active coordination unsaturated sites at the surface.  相似文献

An approach to induce conductivity in immiscible polystyrene/polypropylene (PS/PP) blends is described using a percolated conducting polyaniline/polyamide (PANI/PA) filler combined with a polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene-graft-maleic anhydride compatibilizer. The approach is based on the ability of the compatibilizer to concomitantly stabilize the cocontinuous morphology and to improve the state of dispersion of the PANI/PA filler. Selective localization of PANI/PA in the PS phase with improved filler dispersion is achieved with the optimal master batch (MB) preparation technique followed by its optimized sequence addition to the blend components. This results in an increase in the dc conductivity by six decades as compared with that of the neat compatibilized blend at an effective 4.8-wt % PANI concentration. An investigation of the effect of functionality and concentration of the filler and the compatibilizer on the filler connectivity in the blend is performed. The prevailing specific interactions are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis of the MBs. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Changes in soil pH, exchangeable aluminium (Al), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) and extractable manganese (Mn) were investigated after urea fertigation of a sandy loam soil in an apple orchard in New Zealand. Urea at three rates (0, 25, 50 kg N ha–1 yr–1 or 0, 16.9, 33.8 g N emitter–1 yr–1) was applied in 4 equal fertigations. Soil cores at 4 profile depths (0–10, 10–20, 20–40 and 40–60 cm) directly below and 20 cm from the emitter were sampled approximately 4 weeks after each fertigation and in the following winter. Results obtained showed that the largest changes in soil pH and cations occurred in soils directly below the emitter in the 50 kg N ha–1 yr–1 treatment where the soil pH decreased by 1.6 pH units at all soil depths. The lowest pH of 4.3 was observed at a depth of 27 cm. Exchangeable Al and extractable Mn levels increased to 11 meq kg–1 and 78µg g–1 respectively. Estimated losses of Ca, Mg and K from the upper soil profile depth (0–10 cm) represented 23, 63 and 27% of their respective total exchangeable levels. At lower profile depths (>20 cm), accumulation of displaced K was evident. Variable, and generally non-significant, chemical changes recorded in soils 20 cm from the emitter were attributed to restricted lateral water movement, and therefore urea movement, down the profile.The present study showed that one season of urea fertigation by trickle emitters, applied to a sandy loam, at half the rate conventionally applied to apple orchards (50 kg N ha–1 yr–1) resulted in pH and mineral element imbalances which were potentially and sufficiently severe to inhibit tree growth.  相似文献

The compatibilizing effect of the triblock copolymer poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene) (SEBS) on the morphological and mechanical properties of virgin and recycled polypropylene (PP)/high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) blends was studied, with the properties optimized for rigid composite films. The components of the blend were obtained from municipal plastic waste, PP being acquired from mineral water bottles (PPb) and HIPS from disposable cups. These materials were preground, washed only with water, dried with hot air, and ground again (PPb) or agglutinated (HIPS). Blends with three different weight ratios of PPb and HIPS (6:1, 6:2, and 6:3) were prepared, and three different concentrations of SEBS (5, 6, and 7 wt %) were used for investigations of its compatibilizing effect. Scanning electron microscopy showed that SEBS reduced the diameter of dispersed HIPS particles in the globular and fibril shapes and improved the adhesion between the disperse phase and the matrix. However, SEBS interactions with PPb and HIPS influenced the mechanical properties of the compatibilized PPb/HIPS/SEBS blends. An adequate composition of PP/HIPS, for both virgin and recycled blends, for applications in composite films with characteristics similar to those of synthetic paper was obtained with a minimal amount of SEBS and a maximal HIPS/PP ratio in the range of concentrations studied. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Loop flexibility in enzymes plays a vital role in correctly positioning catalytically important residues. This strong relationship between enzyme flexibility and function provides an opportunity to engineer new substrates and inhibitors. It further allows the design of site-directed mutagenesis experiments to explore enzymatic activity through the control of flexibility of a functional loop. Earlier, we described a novel mechanism in which a small loop triggers the motions of a functional loop in three enzymes (beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase, lipase, and enolase) unrelated in sequence, structure, or function. Here, we further address the question of how the interactions between various flexible loops modulate the movements of the functional loop. We examine beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase as a model system in which a Long loop undergoes a large conformational change (moves in space up to 20 A) upon substrate binding in addition to a small loop (Trp loop) that shows a considerably smaller conformational change. Our molecular-dynamics simulations carried out in implicit and explicit solvent show that, in addition to these two loops, two other neighboring loops are also highly flexible. These loops are in contact with either the Long loop or the Trp loop. Analysis of the covariance of the spatial displacement of the residues reveals that coupled motions occur only in one of these two loops. Sequence analysis indicates that loops correlated in their motions also have highly conserved residues involved in the loop-loop interactions. Further, analysis of crystal structures and simulations in explicit water open the possibility that the Trp loop that triggers the movement of the Long loop in the unbound conformation may also play the same role in the substrate-bound conformation through its contact with the conserved and correlated third loop. Our proposition is supported by the observation that four of the five conserved positions in the third loop are at the interface with the Trp loop. Evolution appears to select residues that drive the functional Long loop to a large conformational change. These observations suggest that altering selected loop-loop interactions might modulate the movements of the functional loop.  相似文献

Computational studies have led to models to understand some classic and contemporary asymmetric reactions involving organocatalysts. The Hajos-Parrish-Eder-Sauer-Wiechert reaction and intermolecular aldol reactions as well as Mannich reactions and oxyaminations catalyzed by proline and other amino acids, and Diels-Alder reactions catalyzed by MacMillan's chiral amine organocatalysts have been studied with density functional theory. We propose a model illustrating how proteins, which differ intheir overall sequences and structures, can form the propagating,twisted ß-sheet conformations, characteristic of amyloids.Some cases of amyloid formation can be explained through a `domainswapping' event, where the swapped segment is either a ß-hairpinor an unstable conformation which can partially unfold and assumea ß-hairpin structure. As in domain swapping, herethe swapped ß-hairpin is at the edge of the structure,has few (if any) salt bridges and hydrogen bonds connectingit to the remainder of the structure and variable extents ofburied non-polar surface areas. Additionally, in both casesthe swapped piece constitutes a transient `building block' ofthe structure, with a high population time. Cellulose nanofibers are promising materials in the development of polymeric foams, because they act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for the growth of cells during foaming. In this research, we studied the incorporation of cellulose nanoparticles in poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate)‐EVA foams. The foams were produced with different fiber contents. We observed the effect of a chemical treatment by acetylation on the cellulose fibber, that is, we evaluated the use of hydrophilic and hydrophobic cellulose nanofibers in EVA foams. The main results indicate that with the addition of only 1% of cellulose nanofibers, cell density significantly reduces when compared with the pure EVA foams. On the other hand, by increasing the cellulose content, the agglomeration of nanofibers also increases, which results in heterogeneous cell sizes. The same phenomenon was observed in the foams produced with acetylated cellulose nanofibers, regardless of the fiber content used. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
