Influence of water and accelerated aging on the shear fracture properties of glass/epoxy composite

The degradation of interlaminar shear strength and shear fracture toughness of glass/epoxy composites due to uptake of distilled water and sea water has been studied. The composites were immersed in water for up to eight months at temperatures up to 70 °C. Unreinforced matrix resin samples were also immersed for periods up to 2 years. Sea water was absorbed less rapidly than distilled water. Weight gains below 1% did not influence the shear strength while higher weight gains reduced shear strength up to 25%. The loss in apparent interlaminar shear strength was uniquely related to specimen weight gain. Mode II fracture toughness, G _IIc, also decreased with increasing immersion time after an initial incubation period, but the accelerated tests were found to reduce G _IIc less than the room temperature tests at comparable weight gains.     

Compact optical millimetre-wave source using a dual-modesemiconductor laser

The authors demonstrate the optical generation of extremely narrow linewidth millimetre-wave signals between 40 and 60 GHz using a single-chip semiconductor laser. A dual-mode long-cavity multisection DFB semiconductor laser is driven at a subharmonic of the free-running-mode beat signal frequency to produce phase-locked millimetre waves with a 3 dB linewidth of less than 10 Hz and a 3 dB locking range of ~500 MHz     

The peeling of flexible probabilistic fasteners

Probabilistic fasteners are attachment devices consisting of two elements each of which is covered by an array of outgrowths or protuberances which interact or interlock with those on the opposing surface to form a bond which can be made and detached many times. A number of peel tests are described in which the behaviour of such bonds, specifically those formed by Velcro® hooks and loops and Dual Lock®, has been explored. The value of the specific energy of detachment of such mechanically latched systems can be related to the geometry and material properties of the individual fixing elements. Similar arguments can be applied, both qualitatively and quantitatively, to some natural systems such as the spines on some cacti.

Geographic epidemiology of gonorrhea in Baltimore, Maryland, using a geographic information system

Ws/Ws rats are deficient in both mucosal- and connective tissue-type mast cells. To study the role of mast cells in active anaphylaxis, changes in vascular permeability in the trachea upon intravenous antigen challenge with Evans blue dye were examined in Ws/Ws, heterogenic Ws/+, and normal +/ + rats sensitized with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. Antigen challenge resulted in fatal anaphylactic shock in some +/+ and Ws/+ rats, but not in Ws/Ws rats. Marked dye leakage developed within 30 min in the trachea of +/+ and Ws/+ rats, while Ws/Ws rats showed no substantial increases in the levels of vascular permeability. Ex vivo stimulation of sensitized lung fragments from +/+ animals with specific antigen induced significant releases of histamine and leukotriene (LT) C4, while sensitized Ws/Ws rat-lung fragments did not. In Ws/Ws rats, levels of nematode-specific IgE, IgG1 and IgG2a antibodies as well as levels of lung eosinophilia were not significantly different from those in +/+ rats. These results show that mast cell-deficient Ws/Ws rats fail to develop active anaphylaxis, and this is mediated probably by the lack of mast cell-derived mediators required for initiation of the reaction.     

Tay-Sachs disease in persons of French-Canadian heritage in northern New England

This study sought to determine whether persons of French-Canadian heritage in northern New England are at high risk for the lethal infantile form of Tay-Sachs disease. In order to accomplish this, death records and laboratory diagnostic records were surveyed to ascertain Tay-Sachs deaths in a cohort of 372,000 live births between 1977-1986. The proportion of the total population with French-Canadian or Jewish heritage was determined from census and birth records, and the ethnic background of Tay-Sachs cases was determined from the corresponding birth records. In 1,860 births, both parents were of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. One of those children was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease. In 41,000 births, both parents were of French-Canadian heritage, and in an additional 93,000 births, one parent was of French-Canadian heritage. No cases of Tay-Sachs disease were identified in the offspring of those individuals. Approximately 14 cases (95% confidence interval 8-20) would be expected, if the gene frequency approximated that reported for individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. Based on the results of this study, routine testing for Tay-Sachs disease heterozygosity is not indicated for persons of French-Canadian heritage in northern New England. This conclusion may not necessarily be valid for persons of French-Canadian heritage residing in other states. Further studies of Tay-Sachs disease mutations and prevalence among persons of French-Canadian heritage will be important to determine possible regional variations in gene frequencies.

Transient conduction in a slab with chemical reaction

The heat-balance integral technique is used to analyse a one-dimensional transient conduction process. Heat is transferred by convection to the surface of a slab and when the surface temperature reaches a certain value, an endothermic reaction is triggered which propagates as an isothermal front in the same direction as the conduction front. Two possible routes to the fully developed heat transfer condition are treated in a way which allows the approximate temperature distribution in the slab to be predicted as a function of the main process variables.     

Designer deletion strains derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae S288C: a useful set of strains and plasmids for PCR-mediated gene disruption and other applications

A set of yeast strains based on Saccharomyces cerevisiae S288C in which commonly used selectable marker genes are deleted by design based on the yeast genome sequence has been constructed and analysed. These strains minimize or eliminate the homology to the corresponding marker genes in commonly used vectors without significantly affecting adjacent gene expression. Because the homology between commonly used auxotrophic marker gene segments and genomic sequences has been largely or completely abolished, these strains will also reduce plasmid integration events which can interfere with a wide variety of molecular genetic applications. We also report the construction of new members of the pRS400 series of vectors, containing the kanMX, ADE2 and MET15 genes.
