Heterogeneous InSb quantum well transistors on silicon for ultra-high speed, low power logic applications

The heterogeneous integration of InSb quantum well transistors onto silicon substrates is investigated for the first time. 85 nm gate length FETs with f_T = 305 GHz at V_ds = 0.5 V and DC performance suitable for digital logic are demonstrated on material with a buffer just 1.8 mum thick. An initial step towards integrating InSb FETs with mainstream Si CMOS for high-speed energy-efficient logic applications has been achieved.     

3D Scene Reconstruction from Multiple Spherical Stereo Pairs

We propose a 3D environment modelling method using multiple pairs of high-resolution spherical images. Spherical images of a scene are captured using a rotating line scan camera. Reconstruction is based on stereo image pairs with a vertical displacement between camera views. A 3D mesh model for each pair of spherical images is reconstructed by stereo matching. For accurate surface reconstruction, we propose a PDE-based disparity estimation method which produces continuous depth fields with sharp depth discontinuities even in occluded and highly textured regions. A full environment model is constructed by fusion of partial reconstruction from spherical stereo pairs at multiple widely spaced locations. To avoid camera calibration steps for all camera locations, we calculate 3D rigid transforms between capture points using feature matching and register all meshes into a unified coordinate system. Finally a complete 3D model of the environment is generated by selecting the most reliable observations among overlapped surface measurements considering surface visibility, orientation and distance from the camera. We analyse the characteristics and behaviour of errors for spherical stereo imaging. Performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated against ground-truth from the Middlebury stereo test bed and LIDAR scans. Results are also compared with conventional structure-from-motion algorithms. The final composite model is rendered from a wide range of viewpoints with high quality textures.     

Optimization of transesterification of castor oil with ethanol using a central composite rotatable design (CCRD)

In the present study, the synthesis of fatty acid esters from castor oil using an alkaline catalyst was optimized. The variables reaction time, catalyst amount and oil:ethanol molar ratio were studied using a central composite rotatable design. The effects and significance of the models on the response variable and on ethyl biodiesel yield derived from pure castor oil were evaluated using a response surface curve and analysis of variance. All the variables significantly affected the reaction yield, the amount of catalyst being the most effective. The highest yield was obtained using an oil:ethanol molar ratio of 1:11, 1.75% KOH and a reaction time of 90 min.     

Exercise training, postprandial hypertriglyceridemia, and LDL subfraction distribution

The purpose of this study was to examine differences in postprandial hypertriglyceridemia (PP-HTG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) subfraction distribution among groups of men and women with different fitness levels. Fifty-four men and women (ages 30-53 yr) were recruited based on their previous two-year activity level: sedentary (S), recreational exercisers (R), and endurance trained (T). After a 24-h dietary preparation, blood was collected, and LDL subfractions were separated and analyzed for cholesterol (C) and apoprotein B100. Plasma triglyceride (TG) concentration was assessed before and at 2, 4, 6, and 8 h after fat meal. PP-HTG was significantly higher for the S group compared with the two activity groups. LDL3-C and LDL3-apoprotein B100 were significantly higher for the S group compared with the T group and for men compared with women. These findings suggest that both recreational and competitive aerobic training are associated with a lower TG response after a fatty meal. However, higher volume aerobic training may be necessary to reduce the number of dense LDL molecules and their cholesterol content.     

Far infrared measurements of bulk and surface phonons in GaAs/AlAs superlattices

We have used far-infrared oblique-incidence reflection spectroscopy to study bulk phonon polaritons, and attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy to study surface phonon polaritons, in long-period GaAs/Al_xGa_1?xAs and short-period GaAs/AlAs superlattices. Results on the former are in good agreement with an effective-medium bulk-slab model of the dielectric tensor of the superlattice; results on the latter are analysed in terms of a model that contains dielectric-tensor contributions from the confined optic phonons.     

Involvement of sphingosine 1-phosphate in nerve growth factor-mediated neuronal survival and differentiation

Sphingolipid metabolites, such as ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate (SPP), are emerging as a new class of second messengers involved in cellular proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Nerve growth factor (NGF), a neurotrophic factor for pheochromocytoma PC12 cells, induced a biphasic increase in the activity of sphingosine kinase, the enzyme that catalyzes the formation of SPP. This activation was blocked by K252a, an inhibitor of tyrosine kinase A (trkA). A rapid 1.7-fold increase was followed by a marked prolonged increase reaching a maximum of fourfold to fivefold stimulation with a concomitant increase in SPP levels and a corresponding decrease in endogenous sphingosine levels. Levels of ceramide, the precursor of sphingosine, were only slightly decreased by NGF in serum-containing medium. However, NGF decreased the elevation of ceramide induced by serum withdrawal. Treatment of PC12 cells with SPP did not induce neurite outgrowth or neurofilament expression, yet it enhanced neurofilament expression elicited by suboptimal doses of NGF. Moreover, SPP also protected PC12 cells from apoptosis induced by serum withdrawal. To further substantiate a role for SPP in the cytoprotective actions of NGF, we found that N, N-dimethylsphingosine, a competitive inhibitor of sphingosine kinase, also induced apoptosis and interfered with the survival effect of NGF. These effects were counteracted by exogenous SPP. Moreover, other structurally related compounds, such as dihydrosphingosine 1-phosphate and lysophosphatidic acid, had no significant protective effects. Our results suggest that activation of sphingosine kinase and subsequent formation of SPP may play an important role in the differentiation and survival effects induced by NGF.
