There have been some reports in the literature of model gastric digestion systems to mimic the dynamic physiological processes within the gastrointestinal tract. However, such devices often require the specification of many control parameters making routine digestion tests unfeasible. This paper introduces a simple in vitro digestion device, comprising of a water-jacketed glass vessel into which a spherical Teflon probe of variable diameter can be inserted. The probe is controlled by a texture analyser to simulate the kinetics of a food digestion process. Using this device under well controlled hydrodynamic flow and biochemical conditions key digestion parameters such as pH, food particle size, protein release, lipid release, cloudiness, etc, can be determined. Feasibility tests of the model device have been conducted using roasted and non-roasted peanuts particles. The status of peanut digestion was examined by the changes in particle size distribution and the mean particle size. Significant differences of surface microstructure have also been observed for peanut particles after the digestion. The influence of parameters such as food to gastric juice ratio, the probe speed and pepsin concentration have been examined in this work. Initial results confirm that all these factors influence the kinetic process of gastric digestion considerably and should be well regulated in any in vitro digestion investigations. In young healthy nonsmokers, effects of nicotine on semantic processing have been observed under strategy-based priming procedures but not under more general priming procedures (Holmes, Chenery, & Copland, 2008; Holmes, Chenery, & Copland, 2010). Effects of nicotine under general priming procedures, however, may be mediated by baseline priming levels that are below optimum such as when compromised by disease. Nicotinic mechanisms may be involved in the cognitive sequalae of Parkinson's disease (PD). Evidence suggests that semantic processing may be compromised in PD but the potential benefit of nicotinic stimulation is unknown. This study investigated the effects of nicotine on semantic processing in nonsmokers with PD (n = 12) and nonsmoking matched controls (n = 17) using general priming procedures. Specifically, an automatic priming task (0.15 relatedness proportion, RP, and 200 ms stimulus onset asynchrony, SOA) and a controlled priming task (0.8 RP and 1000 ms SOA) were used. Prime-target category relation (category related, noncategory related) was also manipulated. Transdermal nicotine patches (7 mg/24 h) were administered in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. For the automatic task, nicotine did not influence priming effects for PD. Unexpectedly, compromised automatic priming for controls was ameliorated. For the controlled task, nicotine influenced priming effects for PD but not controls. The patterns of priming and nicotine effects across the tasks suggest an age-related slowing of the rate of semantic activation for controls, which may be exacerbated in PD. Overall, the findings indicate that nicotine can improve compromised semantic processing in PD, and also influence semantic processing in healthy older individuals. In this article we demonstrate that, when evaluating a method for determining prediction intervals, interval size matters more than coverage because the latter can be fixed at a chosen confidence level with good reliability. To achieve the desired coverage, we employ a simple non-parametric method to compute prediction intervals by calibrating estimated prediction errors, and we extend the basic method with a continuum correction to deal with small data sets. In our experiments on a collection of several NIR data sets, we evaluate several existing methods of computing prediction intervals for partial least-squares (PLS) regression. Our results show that, when coverage is fixed at a chosen confidence level, and the number of PLS components is selected to minimize squared error of point estimates, interval estimation based on the classic ordinary least-squares method produces the narrowest intervals, outperforming the U-deviation method and linearization, regardless of the confidence level that is chosen. 相似文献
We demonstrate highly efficient electroluminescence from silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs). In an optimized nanocrystal-organic light-emitting device, peak external quantum efficiencies of up to 8.6% can be realized with emission originating solely from the SiNCs. The high efficiencies reported here demonstrate for the first time that with an appropriate choice of device architecture it is possible to achieve highly efficient electroluminescence from nanocrystals of an indirect band gap semiconductor. 相似文献
Metal-seeded growth of one-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanostructures is still a very active field of research, despite the huge progress which has been made in understanding this fundamental phenomenon. Liquid growth promoters allow control of the aspect ratio, diameter, and structure of 1D crystals via external parameters, such as precursor feedstock, temperature, and operating pressure. However the transfer of crystallographic information from a catalytic nanoparticle seed to a growing nanowire has not been described in the literature. Here we define the theoretical requirements for transferring defects from nanoparticle seeds to growing semiconductor nanowires and describe why Ag nanoparticles are ideal candidates for this purpose. We detail in this paper the influence of solid Ag growth seeds on the crystal quality of Ge nanowires, synthesized using a supercritical fluid growth process. Significantly, under certain reaction conditions {111} stacking faults in the Ag seeds can be directly transferred to a high percentage of <112>-oriented Ge nanowires, in the form of radial twins in the semiconductor crystals. Defect transfer from nanoparticles to nanowires could open up the possibility of engineering 1D nanostructures with new and tunable physical properties and morphologies. 相似文献

Global policies regulating anthropogenic mercury require an understanding of the relationship between emitted and deposited mercury on intercontinental scales. Here, we examine source-receptor relationships for present-day conditions and four 2050 IPCC scenarios encompassing a range of economic development and environmental regulation projections. We use the GEOS-Chem global model to track mercury from its point of emission through rapid cycling in surface ocean and land reservoirs to its accumulation in longer lived ocean and soil pools. Deposited mercury has a local component (emitted Hg(II), lifetime of 3.7 days against deposition) and a global component (emitted Hg(0), lifetime of 6 months against deposition). Fast recycling of deposited mercury through photoreduction of Hg(II) and re-emission of Hg(0) from surface reservoirs (ice, land, surface ocean) increases the effective lifetime of anthropogenic mercury to 9 months against loss to legacy reservoirs (soil pools and the subsurface ocean). This lifetime is still sufficiently short that source-receptor relationships have a strong hemispheric signature. Asian emissions are the largest source of anthropogenic deposition to all ocean basins, though there is also regional source influence from upwind continents. Current anthropogenic emissions account for only about one-third of mercury deposition to the global ocean with the remainder from natural and legacy sources. However, controls on anthropogenic emissions would have the added benefit of reducing the legacy mercury re-emitted to the atmosphere. Better understanding is needed of the time scales for transfer of mercury from active pools to stable geochemical reservoirs. 相似文献
Melanoma has a better prognosis in women than in men, may be exacerbated by pregnancy, and has been to reported to respond to hormonal manipulations. Laboratory investigations have demonstrated that both animal and human melanomas may respond to changes in the hormonal milieu. Steroid hormone binding activity has been demonstrated in some human melanomas, but only a small percentage of melanomas respond to hormonal manipulation. Randomized trials suggest a possible role for tamoxifen in combination with chemotherapy for metastatic melanoma and for megestrol acetate as an adjuvant. Nevertheless, it appears that the use of steroid hormones in the management of melanoma is limited. 相似文献
