Electricity generation from synthetic acid-mine drainage (AMD) water using fuel cell technologies 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Acid-mine drainage (AMD) is difficult and costly to treat. We investigated a new approach to AMD treatment using fuel cell technologies to generate electricity while removing iron from the water. Utilizing a recently developed microbial fuel cell architecture, we developed an acid-mine drainage fuel cell (AMD-FC) capable of abiotic electricity generation. The AMD-FC operated in fed-batch mode generated a maximum power density of 290 mW/m2 at a Coulombic efficiency greater than 97%. Ferrous iron was completely removed through oxidation to insoluble Fe(III), forming a precipitate in the bottom of the anode chamber and on the anode electrode. Several factors were examined to determine their effect on operation, including pH, ferrous iron concentration, and solution chemistry. Optimum conditions were a pH of 6.3 and a ferrous iron concentration above approximately 0.0036 M. These results suggest that fuel cell technologies can be used not only for treating AMD through removal of metals from solution, but also for producing useful products such as electricity and recoverable metals. Abiotic reduction of 0.1 mM U(VI) by Fe(II) in the presence of synthetic iron oxides (biogenic magnetite, goethite, and hematite) and natural Fe(III) oxide-containing solids was investigated in pH 6.8 artificial groundwater containing 10 mM NaHCO3. In most experiments, more than 95% of added U(VI) was sorbed to solids. U(VI) was rapidly and extensively (> or = 80%) reduced in the presence of synthetic Fe(III) oxides and highly Fe(II) oxide-enriched (18-35 wt % Fe) Atlantic coastal plain sediments. In contrast, long-term (20-60 d) U(VI) reduction was less than 30% in suspensions of six other natural solids with relatively low Fe(III) oxide content (1-5 wt % Fe). Fe(II) sorption site density was severalfold lower on these natural solids (0.2-1.1 Fe(II) nm(-2)) compared tothe synthetic Fe(lII) oxides (1.6-3.2 Fe(II) nm(-2)), which may explain the poor U(VI) reduction in the natural solid-containing systems. Addition of the reduced form of the electron shuttling compound anthrahydroquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AH2DS; final concentration 2.5 mM) to the natural solid suspensions enhanced the rate and extent of U(VI) reduction, suggesting that AH2DS reduced U(VI) at surface sites where reaction of U(VI) with sorbed Fe(II) was limited. This study demonstrates that abiotic, Fe(II)-driven U(VI) reduction is likely to be less efficient in natural soils and sediments than would be inferred from studies with synthetic Fe(III) oxides. 相似文献

There is growing interest in conjunctive water use in irrigation management. However, most systems are introducing ‘joint use’ of surface and groundwater to overcome problems of poor water delivery or quality, rather than systems which actually maximize water utility. This paper summarizes the findings of a literature review on conjunctive use research, including the variable objectives behind its promotion and the hydrological and agricultural planning models experimented with. Effective promotion and subsequent sound management of conjunctive use technologies in irrigation require interaction between a broad range of institutions, including rural development and agricultural support agencies as well as water management bodies. 相似文献

The surgical treatment of the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome made its appearance in 1968 when Dr W. C. Sealy performed the first direct surgical intervention for ablating an accessory connection in a patient with incessant atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia. The surgical approach fell into disfavor in 1990 when catheter ablation using radiofrequency energy was adopted into widespread use. In this presentation, I will attempt to assess the scientific value of the surgical experience using the scholarly tool, the "retrospectroscope," and also to answer the questions, Was it worth it? What was learned? and What was achieved? Previous studies have suggested that penicillin-resistant pneumococcal isolates (especially those with MIC > 1 microgram/mL) usually are clonally related. To test this hypothesis, the molecular epidemiology of 29 clinical isolates of penicillin-resistant pneumococci (of which 83% were also resistant to either cefotaxime or ceftriaxone) collected in central Taiwan was investigated by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Twenty-seven distinct patterns were identified. Our results indicate that an increase in penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae between April 1993 and June 1994 in central Taiwan is not due to the clonal dissemination of a limited number of epidemic strains. 相似文献

A novel technique was developed to control the deposition of electrospun polyurethane fibers using a silicone collector substrate patterned with soft lithography. This method can be used to control selective fiber deposition with broad pattern dimensions (50–500 µm) over a large area. The combination of ease of use, low cost, tunability, and generation of relatively large fiber mats available with this technique is expected to advance our ability to mimic the orientation and anisotropic properties of native tissues to generate improved tissue engineering scaffolds.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive cardiovascular disorder in which local vascular inflammation leads to increased pulmonary vascular remodeling and ultimately to right heart failure. The HDAC inhibitor butyrate, a product of microbial fermentation, is protective in inflammatory intestinal diseases, but little is known regarding its effect on extraintestinal diseases, such as PH. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that butyrate is protective in a Sprague–Dawley (SD) rat model of hypoxic PH. Treatment with butyrate (220 mg/kg intake) prevented hypoxia-induced right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH), hypoxia-induced increases in right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), pulmonary vascular remodeling, and permeability. A reversal effect of butyrate (2200 mg/kg intake) was observed on elevated RVH. Butyrate treatment also increased the acetylation of histone H3, 25–34 kDa, and 34–50 kDa proteins in the total lung lysates of butyrate-treated animals. In addition, butyrate decreased hypoxia-induced accumulation of alveolar (mostly CD68+) and interstitial (CD68+ and CD163+) lung macrophages. Analysis of cytokine profiles in lung tissue lysates showed a hypoxia-induced upregulation of TIMP-1, CINC-1, and Fractalkine and downregulation of soluble ICAM (sICAM). The expression of Fractalkine and VEGFα, but not CINC-1, TIMP-1, and sICAM was downregulated by butyrate. In rat microvascular endothelial cells (RMVEC), butyrate (1 mM, 2 and 24 h) exhibited a protective effect against TNFα- and LPS-induced barrier disruption. Butyrate (1 mM, 24 h) also upregulated tight junctional proteins (occludin, cingulin, claudin-1) and increased the acetylation of histone H3 but not α-tubulin. These findings provide evidence of the protective effect of butyrate on hypoxic PH and suggest its potential use as a complementary treatment for PH and other cardiovascular diseases. 相似文献

Single solute adsorption and coadsorption of As(III) and As(V) onto hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), oxidation of As(III), and extraction efficiencies were measured in 0.2 atm O2. Oxidation was negligible for single-adsorbate experiments, but significant oxidation was observed in the presence of As(V) and HFO. Single-adsorbate As(III) or As(V) were incompletely extracted (0.5 M NaOH for 20 min), but all As was recovered in coadsorbate experiments. Single-adsorbate data were well-simulated using published surface complexation models, but those models (calibrated for single-adsorbate results) provided poor fits for coadsorbate experiments. An amended model accurately simulated single- and coadsorbate results. Model predictions of significant change in As(III) surface complex speciation in coadsorbate experiments was confirmed using zeta potential measurements. Our results demonstrate that mobility of arsenic in groundwater and removal in engineered treatment systems are more complicated when both As(III) and As(V) are present than anticipated based on single-adsorbate experimental results. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: In the FRISC trial, dalteparin 120 IU/kg body weight twice daily for unstable coronary artery disease was safe and reduced the risk of new coronary events. This risk reduction was maintained during the following extended treatment with a fixed dose of 7500 IU dalteparin once daily. METHODS AND RESULTS: Minor bleeding was more frequent in women compared with men: relative risk (CI) 2.88 (1.78 to 4.67) during the weight-adjusted and 2.36 (1.37 to 2.63) during the fixed dose treatment. The anti-Xa activity determined in samples (n = 175) obtained during the acute phase treatment was higher in women compared with men (P <.001) and in nonsmokers compared with smokers (<.001) in multiple regression analysis. Also, during the fixed-dose treatment (n = 131) an independent relation between anti-Xa activity and sex (P <.001), but not smoking habits, persisted. CONCLUSION: To improve future low-molecular-weight heparin dose regimens for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, it might be important to consider the influence of sex and smoking habits. 相似文献

This article focuses on neuroendocrine measures in anxiety disorders and their relationships to neurotransmitter and neuroendocrine function. In particular, the hypothalamic-pituitary-somatotropin and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes are emphasized, and a role for extrahypothalamic corticotropin releasing factor is proposed. Additional neuroactive hormones are also considered. A nonhuman primate model of anxiety is discussed in terms of its neuroendocrine relevance. And, throughout, a hypothetical functional-anatomic model for anxiety and panic is proposed using the findings of cognitive neuroscience fear research. Finally, an effort is made to synthesize existing psychoneuroendocrinologic data into a current conceptualization of the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders. 相似文献
