Over the years, many attempts have been made to increase the patency of small- to medium-sized prosthetic vascular grafts. However, none of them has greatly affected long-term rates. Recently, nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to inhibit thrombus formation in such grafts, suggesting that local delivery of NO may help to increase graft patency. This study describes the site-specific delivery of NO by entrapping NO-releasing microspheres in the pores of a vascular graft. NO-releasing polyethyleneimine microspheres (PEIX) were developed using a novel water-in-oil emulsion technique involving chemical crosslinking with a bis-epoxide. The PEIX microspheres were then derivatized with NO forming the [N(O)NO]- moiety of the diazeniumdiolates formerly known as NONOates. These polymeric NO-releasing particles were found to spontaneously release 194 nmol NO/mg with a half-life of over 66 h under physiologic conditions. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled microspheres were then embedded into the pores of a 60-micron nonreinforced Gore-tex vascular graft using a simple evacuation technique and evaluated for microsphere placement and NO release. Scanning electron microscopic analysis showed the microspheres entrapped in the pores of the vascular graft releasing 10 nmol NO/mg with a half-life of 51 h. The microspheres remained entrapped in the graft even after immersion and NO release, as confirmed by fluorescence of the medium. These results suggest that NO-releasing particles can be incorporated into the pores of a vascular graft to deliver therapeutic amounts of NO for the prevention of thrombosis in small-diameter prosthetic grafts.  相似文献

Urban watercourses are potential hazards because of their rapid flow changes, poor water quality and contaminated sediments. This study is a preliminary field investigation into fine sediment-associated metal contamination and its transport dynamics in a highly urbanised catchment in West Yorkshire, UK. Spatial and temporal changes in the concentration of channel-bed sediment-associated metals are investigated, and the fluxes of selected suspended sediment-associated metals, during an extreme high flow event, are determined. Channel-bed sediments were more contaminated at the most heavily urbanised sites. Data suggest that contaminated bed sediments could accumulate and possibly become increasingly contaminated between high-flow events, prior to being flushed from the system. Fluxes of contaminated suspended sediments were very high at the peak of the high flow event. The spatial and temporal dynamics of contaminated fine sediment which were identified in this study could inform planners with regard to future monitoring strategies.  相似文献

Two experiments examined priming in the lexical decision task, an indirect test of memory. Experiment 1 manipulated type of processing during study of unrelated word pairs. Recognition of individual words benefited more from semantic than from nonsemantic processing. Repetition priming in lexical decision depended on the context in which the target appeared. Targets preceded at test by unstudied primes showed greater repetition priming if processed nonsemantically during study; targets preceded at test by studied primes were not affected by type of processing at study. Interestingly, studied targets were facilitated more by studied than by unstudied primes regardless of whether the prime came from the same pair as the target. This list-wide episodic priming occurred under all four processing conditions in Experiment 1 (consonant counting, rote rehearsal, pleasantness rating, and sentence generation) with a 250-ms stimulus onset asynchrony. Experiment 2 showed that this list-wide episodic priming disappeared by 1,000 ms, suggesting that it had resulted from relatively transient activation. A methodology was developed to monitor and evaluate the removal of solids and associated constituents by a nutrient separating baffle box (NSBB) storm-water treatment device treating runoff from a 4.3 ha (10.6 acre) residential watershed discharging into the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. The NSBB was monitored over a 359-day time period using autosamplers to quantify water column removal during runoff events, and by quantifying and analyzing solids that accumulated within the NSBB. Flow composited influent and effluent samples were collected to represent water column performance. Event mean concentration (EMC) reduction was moderate (mean: 17%) and variable (range: ?39 to 68%) for suspended solids, and negative for nitrogen, phosphorus, fecal coliforms chromium, and copper. The mass of solids that accumulated in bottom chambers and in a strainer screen was quantified and analyzed for nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. A quantitative evaluative framework was devised to estimate the total pollutant mass removal by NSBB, which consisted of the summation of the separately calculated mass removals for water column, bottom chamber material, and strainer screen material. The water column accounted for only 4% of total solids that accumulated in the NSBB, which was equally divided between bottom chamber and strainer screen. Removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, and metals could be accounted for only by considering mass accumulations. Results suggest that overall assessment of pollutant removal by NSBB must be cognizant of the materials not captured by typical autosamplers: larger size sediment particles, large floating and suspended matter, and the pollutants associated with these materials. Using water column EMCs as the sole measure of performance significantly underestimated loading reduction of storm-water constituents by the NSBB. The monitoring and evaluative methodology applied to the NSBB may be applicable to load reduction evaluations for other storm-water treatment devices with a similar function.  相似文献

For pt.I, see ibid., vol.46, no.4, p.961-71 (1999). Increasing transducer bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is fundamental to improving the quality of medical ultrasound images. In previous work, we have proposed the use of multi-layer 1-3 PZT/polymer composites to increase both, but have encountered significant fabrication challenges. Thus, we have developed a multi-layer composite hybrid array that will not require post alignment. Starting from a 2-MHz, three-layer PZT-5H, thick film transducer designed for 1.5-D arrays, cuts are made only through the top layer and back-filled with epoxy, forming a composite layer on top of two ceramic layers. Finite element (PZFlex) simulations show that for a 2-MHz phased-array element with a single matching layer, the three-layer hybrid structure increases the pulse echo SNR by 11 dB versus a single layer PZT element and improves -6 dB pulse echo fractional bandwidth by a factor of 1.4. Composite hybrid arrays fabricated in our laboratory showed an improvement in SNR of 6 to 11 dB over a PZT control and an increase in -6 dB bandwidth by a factor of 1.1. The Schottky-collector resonant-tunnel-diode (SRTD) is an resonant-tunnel-diode with the normal N+ collector layer and ohmic contact replaced by direct Schottky contact to the space-charge layer, thereby eliminating the associated parasitic series resistance Rins. By scaling the Schottky collector contact to submicron dimensions, the device periphery-to-area ratio is increased, decreasing the periphery-dependent components of the parasitic resistance, and substantially increasing the device's maximum frequency of oscillation. We report measured d.c. and microwave parameters of planar SRTDs fabricated with 1 μm-geometries in AlAs/GaAs.  相似文献

A range of 18 diesel fuels and 21 kerosene fuels from mainly Australian petroleum and synthetic fuel sources, including coal, shale and peat, was investigated. Compositional details were defined as the weight per cent abundances of n-alkanes, branched plus cyclic saturates, single-ring aromatics, doublering aromatics and polynuclear aromatics, using both h.p.l.c. and 13C n.m.r. techniques. Relationships between fuel composition and a range of fuel properties were sought. Simple linear relationships between property values and compositional data were used. Explicit correlative expressions were derived using multiple linear regression analysis, with the coefficient of multiple determination, R2, indicating the quality of the fit between observed and calculated property values. In most cases good correlations were achieved. For diesels the properties investigated, with R2 values in parentheses, were: inverse specific gravity (0.99); 13C n.m.r. aromaticity (0.99); 1H n.m.r. aromaticity (0.88); cetane index (0.97); aniline point (0.96); diesel index (0.98); and FIA-measured aromatics content (0.77). For kerosenes the properties, with R2 values in parentheses, were: 13C n.m.r. aromaticity (0.98); 1H n.m.r. aromaticity (0.97); smoke point (0.88); and FIA-measured aromatics content (0.94). The results are shown to be of value in assessing the potential and limitations of hydrotreating as a process for upgrading synfuels.  相似文献

The decreasing cost of embedded chips is one of many factors that have spurred growing interest in smart cards. Today, typical markets for smart cards fall into three broad areas: electronic currency, an application in which smart cards replace cash or traditional credit cards in pay phone, transit, and toll collection systems; electronic identification, which permits controlled access to buildings or systems (like computers or cash registers); and data warehousing, applications that must opportunistically store and retrieve data, such as medical records, object tracking information, or process verification information. Such applications are only the beginning-future applications could make smart cards an integral and almost transparent part of our daily lives. Two factors seem to be converging to make this possible. First, as the world we live in becomes increasingly complex, smart cards offer a way to integrate that complexity into a compact and portable package. Second, the increasing functionality developers can integrate into a smart card opens new avenues for application development  相似文献
