Implications of fertility patterns in the Republic of Korea: a study by computer simulation

Implications of various fertility patterns in the Republic of Korea (ROK) are studied by computer simulation. These patterns include the factors: age of marriage, sex preference, abortion (induced), contraception and sterilisation. As a result of studying a large number of combinations of these factors, the following tentative conclusions, among others, are reached. If future cohorts of women in the ROK become limiters after two live births and marry according to an observed high level marriage distribution, at least two of the methods of birth control--abortion, contraception, and sterilisation--will have to be used extensively to yield a mean number of live births (MNLB) in these cohorts of the order 2-2. However, if these women marry later than the observed high level marriage distribution and, in addition, accept effective methods of contraception more widely and use them more effectively, then the MNLB experienced by these cohorts could move below 2-5 wihtout the extensive utilisation of abortion and sterilisation.     

Impact of the new generation coronary care unit

A 30-bed coronary care unit with facilities for fluoroscopy, haemodynamic monitoring, mechanical heart assistance, and long-term electrocardiographic monitoring operated at a reasonable cost over five years. Much of the work was entrusted to trained nurses, and there was close consultation with cardiac surgeons over those patients who needed catheterisation or surgery. New procedures greatly reduced the numbers of early deaths from cardiac arrest and cardiac failure but had less influence on late mortality. Hospital mortality for all 3353 patients was 6-8%, and for patients under 65 with definite infarction, who were admitted direct it was 5-7%.     

The relationship between social desirability and internal consistency of personality scales.

3 hypotheses concerning the relationships between psychometric characteristics of 61 personality scales were tested. A measure of internal consistency (Kuder-Richardson Formula 21) was found to be positively correlated (.62) with the degree of imbalance in the social desirability keying of the scales. Internal consistency was also negatively correlated (-.46) with the proportion of neutral items in the scales. The mean probability of a keyed response to the items in a scale was positively correlated (.83) with the proportion of items keyed for socially desirable responses. Inactivation of the phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system in various species of bacteria by vinylglycolic acid

The alkenoic hydroxyacid 2-hydroxy-3-butenoic acid (vinylglycolate) specifically inhibited the phosphotransferase system in a variety of bacteria while not affecting respiration-coupled transport systems.     

Study of Portland cement fracture surfaces by scanning electron microscopy techniques

An extensive scanning electron microscopy study was carried out with respect to the fracture surfaces of Portland cement hydrated for various times. It is shown that the two major products of hydration are calcium silicate hydrate spherulites, which consist of radiating fibres and calcium hydroxide platelets. These fibres bond with one another to hold the spherulites together. The volume between the spherulites consists of calcium hydroxide platelets. The fracture is frequently found to be across the weakly bonded basal planes of the calcium hydroxide, and is believed to limit the strength of the Portland cement.     

The rotating cylinder electrode: a review of development

Recent developments in the theory and applications of rotating cylinder electrodes are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the mass transfer behaviour and the development of turbulent flow patterns, and its exploitation in electrochemical reactors for a variety of applications including metal deposition from waste and effluent liquors.
