Nanocrystal-semiconductor interface: Atomic-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscope study of lead sulfide nanocrystal quantum dots on crystalline silicon

We report on a cross-sectional high resolution transmission electron microscope study of lead sulfide nanocrystal quantum dots （NCQDs） dispersed on electron-transparent silicon nanopillars that enables nearly atomically-resolved simultaneous imaging of the entire composite： the quantum dot, the interfacial region, and the silicon substrate. Considerable richness in the nanocrystal shape and orientation with respect to the substrate lattice is observed. The average NCQD-substrate separation is found to be significantly smaller than the length of the ligands on the NCQDs. Complementary photoluminescence measurements show that light emission from PbS NCQDs on silicon is effectively quenched which we attribute to intrinsic mechanisms of energy and charge transfer from PbS NCQDs to Si.     

Efficient approaches to testing VHDL DSP models

Generation of test benches for large DSP behavioral models is a complicated, labor intensive task. Also, tests generated manually satisfy no formal definition of completeness. To address these needs, high level approaches to test bench development are employed which relieve the modeler of the details of this task. High level design tools are used to develop the test bench VHDL code. The test bench code models sensors which drive the Model Under Test (MUT). Data files which can also drive the MUT are prepared by environmental data generators. The system specification values are linked to the testbench via requirements capture tools and test plans. Intelligent interfaces are used to control the development and simulation of the test bench. The approach is applicable to the testing of any DSP system modeled in the VHDL language. It provides the modeler with the capability to rapidly test DSP models and adjust the model test environment to frequent changes in system requirements.Material in this paper was previously presented at the 1 st Annual RASSP Conference, Arlington, Virginia, August 16, 1994, at the 2nd Annual RASSP Conference, Arlington, VA, July 1995, and at the Spring 1995 VHDL International Users Forum in San Diego, CA.     

Granularity issues in a knowledge-based programming environment

Marvel is a knowledge-based programming environment that assists software development teams in performing and coordinating their activities. While designing Marvel, several granularity issues were discovered that have a strong impact on the degree of intelligence that can be exhibited, as well as on the friendliness and performance of the environment. The most significant granularity issues include the refinement of software entities in the software database and decomposition of the software tools that process the entities and report their results to the human users. This paper describes the many alternative granularities and explains the choices made for Marvel.     

Freud is not the Dilthey of psychology (at least not in America).

Responds to comments by F. J. Wertz (see record 1993-35773-001) on G. A. Hornstein's original article (see record 1992-24439-001) about the struggle between psychoanalysis and experimental psychology. Hornstein accuses Wertz of using this struggle to advance his phenomenological agenda and defends the article as an intent to describe what psychoanalysts and experimental psychologists actually did, not what Wertz would like to have seen them do. A causal model of the educational plans and career expectations of Mexican American high school girls.

A structural model predicting the educational and career expectations of 282 Mexican American high school girls was developed and then tested on samples of 247 Mexican American boys and 228 European American girls. Predictors included socioeconomic status, acculturation, academic achievement, instrumentality, expressiveness, gender role attitudes, parental and teacher support, family and career commitment, and perceptions of barriers. Results indicated that the initial model was plausible in the sample of Mexican American girls. Findings from the multiple-groups analyses provided evidence supporting the primacy of cultural influences over gender in predicting the educational and career expectations of Mexican American girls. Report of the Second Fusion Energy Sciences Committee of Visitors

This report summarizes the findings and recommendations of the second Committee of Visitors (COV) whose charge was to review the manner in which the U. S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fusion Energy Science (OFES) manages certain programs under its charter. The specific programs reviewed by this COV involve confinement innovation and basic plasma sciences. The charge letter from the Department of Energy is included as Appendix A.
