In this paper, a new solution method for the modified eigenvalue problem with specific application to structural dynamic reanalysis is presented. The method, which is based on the block Lanczos algorithm, is developed for multiple low rank modifications to a system and calculates a few selected eigenpairs. Fluorescence spectral characteristics associated with growth under different irradiance levels, and during rapidly changing lighting conditions, were measured on healthy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants using a laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) system. The LIFS system was designed as a prototype of a handheld field remote sensing system and used a tripled Nd:YAG laser to produce ultraviolet (UV) excitation photons at 355 nm. Dark-adapted canopies of the bean and wheat plants grown under 150, 300, or 450 μmol m−2 s−1 of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) exhibited LIFS spectra with higher relative fluorescence intensities than emissions from light-adapted plants at all three light levels. Blue/red and blue/far-red leaf fluorescence ratios for both bean and wheat plants increased dramatically as PAR increased, but red/far-red ratios decreased as PAR increased. Light-adapted plants grown under the three light levels were then subjected to several rapidly changing lighting conditions. Plants were exposed sequentially to 150, 300, and 650 μmol m−2 s−1 PAR from metal halide lamps, followed by a fourth light treatment of 650 μmol m−2 s−1 PAR from a mixture of metal halide and tungsten-halogen lamps. The tungsten-halogen lamps added significant amounts of near-infrared (NIR) irradiation to the background light environment provided by the metal halide lamps. Results indicated that both bean and wheat canopies generally exhibited stable blue, green, red, and far-red fluorescence emissions when plants were exposed to 150, 300, and 650 μmol m−2 s−1 PAR from the metal halide lamps. In contrast, when bean and wheat plants were exposed to the NIR-enriched light supplied by the tungsten-halogen lamps, blue and green fluorescence remained stable, but red and far-red fluorescence increased dramatically immediately after exposure to the NIR photons. However, the increased levels of red and far-red fluorescence observed after exposure to NIR light decreased quickly (within 55 s) and returned to “baseline” levels observed at the start of the rapidly changing light experiments. Results indicate that handheld LIFS instruments can be used for remote sensing of plant canopies under a diversity of lighting conditions including full darkness, dawn and dusk lighting environments, and under rapidly changing light environments similar to those encountered on partly cloudy days.  相似文献

The three-dimensional (3-D) X-ray crystal microscope is a new nondestructive tool for the 3-D characterization of the mesoscopic and nanoscopic materials structure. A prototype microscope is installed on beamline 34-ID at the advanced photon source and has begun initial operation. The prototype microscope has a routine spatial resolution of approximately 0.5 × 0.5 × 1 μm3 and can probe tens to hundreds of microns below a sample surface, depending on the composition of the sample. For each volume element measured, the microscope can determine between 10 and 16 parameters. The measured parameters are the local crystallographic phase (1 deg of freedom), the Eulerian angles of crystal orientation (3 deg of freedom), and the plastic and/or elastic strain-tensor elements (6 to 12 deg of freedom). The time required to collect each volume element varies between 1 and 14 seconds, depending on the precision of the parameters and the sample complexity. Much faster data acquisition and much better spatial resolution are certain in the near future. Some initial results are presented to illustrate how the 3-D X-ray crystal microscope can provide unprecedented information about the 3-D structure of materials. ABSTRACT: The electronic states of a singly ionized on-axis double-donor complex (D2+) confined in two identical vertically coupled, axially symmetrical quantum dots in a threading magnetic field are calculated. The solutions of the Schrodinger equation are obtained by a variational separation of variables in the adiabatic limit. Numerical results are shown for bonding and antibonding lowest-lying artificial molecule states corresponding to different quantum dot morphologies, dimensions, separation between them, thicknesses of the wetting layers, and magnetic field strength.  相似文献

Temperature-phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD) is an emerging technology that facilitates improved performance and pathogen destruction in anaerobic sewage sludge digestion by optimising conditions for 1) hydrolytic and acidogenic organisms in a first-stage/pre-treatment reactor and then 2) methogenic populations in a second stage reactor. Pre-treatment reactors are typically operated at 55–65 °C and as such select for thermophilic bacterial communities. However, details of key microbial populations in hydrolytic communities and links to functionality are very limited. In this study, experimental thermophilic pre-treatment (TP) and control mesophilic pre-treatment (MP) reactors were operated as first-stages of TPAD systems treating activated sludge for 340 days. The TP system was operated sequentially at 50, 60 and 65 °C, while the MP rector was held at 35 °C for the entire period. The composition of microbial communities associated with the MP and TP pre-treatment reactors was characterised weekly using terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) supported by clone library sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons. The outcomes of this approach were confirmed using 454 pyrosequencing of gene amplicons and fluorescence in-situ hybridisation (FISH). TP associated bacterial communities were dominated by populations affiliated to the Firmicutes, Thermotogae, Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi. In particular there was a progression from Thermotogae to Lutispora and Coprothermobacter and diversity decreased as temperature and hydrolysis performance increased. While change in the composition of TP associated bacterial communities was attributable to temperature, that of MP associated bacterial communities was related to the composition of the incoming feed. This study determined processes driving the dynamics of key microbial populations that are correlated with an enhanced hydrolytic functionality of the TPAD system.  相似文献

Problem: What is a “good plan”? Among their key goals, plans aim to communicate, influence and engage. Persuasiveness (the ability to engage and motivate) is, therefore, an essential plan quality. Unfortunately, all too many comprehensive plans lack this important quality. In addition, state planning mandates intended to strengthen planning can instead worsen this shortcoming.

Purpose: To develop a methodology to measure and compare the communicative and persuasive qualities of plans in states with and without planning mandates.

Methods: A specially designed protocol was developed to measure the communicative and persuasive qualities of comprehensive plans. Plans of 20 municipalities in states with planning mandates were compared with those of 20 municipalities in states without planning mandates. Statistical analyses of the results were conducted using the Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney (U) test and simple t tests.

Results and conclusions: Requiring local governments to prepare plans did not result in better plans—at least as measured by a protocol tailored specifically to assess the persuasiveness and communicative quality of plans. Plans prepared in mandate states were much more rigid and standardized than those prepared in nonmandate states. Nonmandated plans also scored much higher in terms of their narrative and storytelling qualities than mandated plans. Private consultant involvement in plan making significantly increased the communicative and persuasive qualities of plans.

Takeaway for practice: Plans in all 40 municipalities fell far short of the ideal communicative and persuasive qualities set forth in the protocol. The deficiency was greatest in states with planning mandates. The involvement of private consultants had a positive impact on plan quality, while the provision of state funding for planning did not.

We determined and fine‐tuned the solids transport models appropriate for predicting the single‐phase carrier fluid velocity to transport solid particles in conduits for horizontal, low concentration flow. A database with 538 experimental data points was compiled. A literature review was performed to determine the data ranges, forces, and mechanisms used to develop 44 models, and their velocity predictions were compared against the database using statistics. Using the dimensionless forms of the models and the data, the model parameters were adjusted to improve their accuracy and identify the dominant forces. At low concentrations: for liquid/solid flow from a bed of solids and gas/solid flow from the bottom of pipelines, the particle weight, and inertial and viscous forces dominate; for gas/solid flow from a bed of solids, the particle weight, and inertial, viscous, and adhesive forces play a role; and gaps exist in the data for large‐diameter pipes and high‐density gases. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 60: 76–122, 2014  相似文献

De novo synthesis and mitochondrial elongation of fatty acids have been demonstrated in subcellular fractions from hog and human aorta. Microsomal fatty acid elongation has been shown in hog aorta. The activity catalyzing the formation of fatty acids from acetyl and malonyl CoA was associated with a high molecular weight complex in the 6×106g×min supernatant fraction. The principal product was palmitic acid. Some myristic and stearic acids were also formed. One elongation system was associated with protein which sedimented between 4500 g×min and 150,000 g×min. It used acetyl CoA but not malonyl CoA, and NADH was the preferred reducing agent. Radioactivity from acetyl CoA was incorporated into many fatty acids. In hog aorta a second elongation system was found associated with protein which sedimented at 6×106 g×min. It used malonyl CoA preferentially as substrate and either NADH or NADPH as reducing agent.  相似文献
